So, a cute girl works at a local Gamestop. Today, I asked her for her phone number and she gave it to me. Small and awkward problem. She shares a name with my cousin. And it's not a terribly common name like Sarah or Jennifer or anything. She's literally the second girl I've ever known or even heard of with this name. The first being my cousin.

So after 20 plus years of the name being synonymous with family, I'm getting this weird mental block that every time I think about her I get things like:
[my cousin] is cute.
I wonder if [my cousin] actually likes me or was just humoring me.
Kinda hope [my cousin] is single. Game playing girls like [my cousin] are never available in my experience.

This isn't some major problem. My cousin isn't a bad person. And its not like I can't tell the difference in my thoughts, it was just an odd mental effect that has been a little awkward for a moment.

So, escapists, the real question is: Have you ever had a similar mental block? Dated a girl/guy that shared a name with a sister/brother/friend? Met a person that looks just like someone else you know? Or just generally had some issue where you had some trouble separating two or more things from each other?
Yes, I have similar mental blocks all the time. One of my friends is 6'5" and I recently met another guy with the same name who was 5'7" and I just couldn't process it. I kept looking over his head when I tried to talk to him. However, your situation could relatively simply be alleviated by giving her a pet name.

I'm not close enough to any of my family members to have had a problem like this.

But I suggest, you just come up with a nickname for them to create a sense of peace until you get over the mental block. Sooner or later, you won't think of them that way and you can use their first name with ease. It's all about conditioning.

But a good friend of mine has been engaged to two girls named Heather. Both engagements were broken off.
I'm assuming it wasn't for yelling out the wrong name in bed.

OT: Nope, I get all my "this is awkward" moments purely from being awkward.

I dated a girl whose name was the same as my first pet cat - Kimberly.
So, yeah, that was a bit weird...not being one of those weird furrie folks and all, but she thought it was funny.

Also dated a girl who had the same name as my half sister.
And (?lucky) for me my half sister is an ugly beast looking 'women' and the chick I was dating was nothing of the sort - also, she was REALLY dark skinned so it was like one of those old PSP ads from a few years back.

At my work there was a chick named Joya who really like me. Didn't know that she liked me because I gave up on girls years ago. Joya would follow me around and try to strike up conversations with me, but I just ignored her. You see, the reason she liked me because she says that we had met 7 times before I started working there. She started naming off the places, I remember being really drunk. Told by her that we kept meeting each other because we were meant to be together. Basically told me this at a office Christmas party after she had a few. Even though I thought she was lying, to this day I think about it. Ah well, she has a boyfriend and I still don't give a crap.

I always make jokes about wanting to fuck the other guitarist in my band's sister. Her name is Hayden. My ten-year-old nephew is also named Hayden. So I have to be really careful and always say things like, "I want to fuck, your sister, Hayden" or he just calls me a pedophile and a nephew fucker.

It's not quite the same thing, but its similar.

Nothing like that for me, but a friend of mine has dated 5 different girls with some variation of the name Kate (Katie, Kathleen, Katherine, etc.) All 5 were completely different personalities and sadly each relationship ended badly.

Doesn't have to be a girlfriend or boyfriend or anything like that. Really just looking for experiences where you had similar trouble.

For example, an Ex had a family friend that looked just like a guy that I work with that I hate (he hates me, too, so there's no love loss), and I had some difficulty not thinking of them as being the same person. I knew it wasn't the same person and didn't do or say anything, but damn if they weren't twins.

Well, have a pair of friends (who are brothers.). And their parents cunningly called them Dave and Danny. Every other time I mix up their names. Thant and well...Knowing at least 13 people called Chris.

I have 3 real life friends named Chris (Two of whom I befriended at about the same time, and who were already friends before I'd met them), my brother has a friend named Chris, and my first friend on this website is named Chris.

I know a lot of Chris's.

Kind of like this person. Also like him I've never had a girlfriend.

I spent so much time on the internet, fapping to different kinds of porn, that I doubt I will ever have any sort of mental block about things like that EVER. That said I've never had boy/girlfriend so I guess I can't really comment.

I dated a girl for a while who had the same name as my sister. It did start to feel a bit awkward after a while. You can always just buy yourself a banjo and some denim overalls.
