Day before xmas and guess what just happened....
My xbox just got a red ring... or rather 3/4 of a ring, the top right is still off but the rest are red.
worst christmas present ever!!! So can anyone on the escapist help me? is there a way to fix it or do i have to send it in to microsoft...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The red ring is always 3/4.
There isn't a lot you CAN do, its pretty much scheduled to break after a year.
You could try a cooler for extended period of gaming or something like that. For now though, looks like you're gonna have to send it in for repair.

I have heard that there are tricks you can do to get your Xbox working again without having to send it in, one involving a towel and one involving an eraser.

But I've heard they're both pretty risky.

I'd just send it in, mine only took a week and a half to get it back.

My house got stolen and I missed the guy for like... Sheer retarded dumb luck of his...

...On the other hand, somewhere some kid just starved to death alone and unloved.

Just giving you some perspective. We're rather lucky actually.

I heard the towel trick works sometimes. Try that first and if that doesn't work send it in (if you can do that after you did the trick).

Don't even bother with the towel trick. Sure, it's a temporary fix, but you're just delaying the inevitable.

EDIT: I got tired of it happening, so I purchased an Arcade unit, and whenever one craps out, I swap out the HD, send the busted one in, and play on the alternate until that one breaks.

Rinse
Repeat

Yeah what a crappy guy, who is he to point out that life's unfair, and a hell of a lot worse for tons of other people. We have to notice your problem. This may have happened to a lot of members and they managed to get through it but let's stop right now and focus on your problems.

I don't have an xbox, and I'm pretty sure I've heard of this problem somewhere, but what is it? is it like, overheating and spazing out or something else?...

Well when you are sending it back, send a letter to the North Pole asking for a USB powered Laptop cooler, you plug it into the 360's usb, and when you turn on the 360, the cooler turns on. Less Red Ringing.

And yeah I did. They jumped over a...10 ft high wall or whatever. They didn't take much, just my mother's purse...but enough to make today a mess...her car keys and documents were in it :/

The towel trick might work (link to a how to already posted in the thread) but it is a temp fix at best, you will have to send in your xbox sooner than later. The guys at MS tech are just going to send you a replacement unit, if immediacy is your concern it may be just as effective to buy a new xbox. A basic unit set sans hard drive will not cost you much more than the maintenance fee. Especially in the boxing week product unloading period.

what ever you do don't be like me and pull off the "if you remove this you void the warrenty" sticker in an attempt to fix it yourself, that one cost me 400 bucks. on the plus side i now have a fancy 360 shaped foot rest.

I have a question: Do you have to pay something to make Micro$oft fix your Xbox?
It has a three year warranty for this exact problem, if I remember correctly.
