I don't hate pop music... I don't listen to it but as long as it keeps the stupid demographic preoccupied and stays away from me it's fine...

My real problem is when pop stars try to compare themselves to real artists and try to pretend there shallow 3 minutes of repetitive bullshit has some sort of artistic merit...

I want you to die, die horribly for that statement!
That is one of the funniest things I have heard today, and I just watched stand up comedy on youtube for an hour...

So what. You could do the same thing with any 12-bar blues from the 30s or any rock or doo-wop from the 1950s.
12 bar and doo-wop were specifically designed to let people who have never played/sang together have a common ground and be able to jam. This is blatant cookie-cutter bullshit at its worst.

Oh, the similarities between these songs are not the problem... The problem is both lyrics are rubbish, the artists not very talented and the "beat" makes me want to strangle kittens. And I REALLY love kittens...
What I hate the most is that somehow Kesha feels she knows how P Diddy feels in the morning. That's just presumptuous.
Hey, maybe Kesha and Katy Perry want to jam together! Ever thought of THAT?!
Nah, just kidding, but really, music has really taken a turn for the worst in the last few years

You know, I almost actually thought it was a decent video, that is, until I saw you're comment on youtube:

My videos highlight the truth. And the truth is that the world is bad.
No. Just no. Absolutely no.

I'm ashamed to say I kind of found that mix catchy. Then again, being constantly exposed to it at school might be a factor...

A lot of people are being very quick to condem pop singers like Katy Perry and Kesha for writing lyrics about sex and drugs and alcohol.
But-? What exactly were rock stars singing about in the 60s and 70s? W
hat kind of stuff do the fucking Rolling Stones sing about?
Are you aware of the term Sex Drugs and Rock n Roll?

Don't be such grasping cun- ... hypocrits.

If Kesha does it she's a vacuous and self absorbed whore, if Mick Jager does it he's a fucking rock God? You really can't criticise them for their song's lyrical content and subject matter, because sop many bands write about the same shit and get away with it.

There is good pop music and bad pop music, just like there is good and bad music of any genre.

It happens alot. You can even take two Genre's of music that arent even close and they'll steal something from them.
I got a perfect example.

The first five seconds of this song:

Now on this song go to 2:40

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R20f-TPKjzc

It's the same thing. And the second song came out in the 60's or 70's and the first song came out a few years ago.

The music industry is running out of truly talented people who can sing AND write songs, so they just either do 'cover' songs or they make up crappy songs stealing other peoples work.
Its called sampling, tons of great artists have done it. Listen to 'Taurus' by Spirit which was released in 1968. Around that time there was a little band known as Led Zeppelin opening for them during their American tour. Three years later Led Zeppelin released this equally little song known as 'Stairway to Heaven.' The opening melody sounds almost identical to 'Taurus.' Listen to them both and tell me which is a better song. Of course I'm not saying the Pussycat Dolls even come close to ELO, I'm just saying that that isn't a sign the music industry is failing.

No, I'm saying that:

1. You sound very, very pretentious there. You're videos expose the world's horrible nature? Seriously?

And 2. I'm an optimist, and I think the world is quite alright.

1: There's really no way I could word that concept without sounding pretentious, but none of the videos I make are happy-clappy love-fests. My inspiration is generally the irony, injustice and general unpleasantness of the world at large.

2: I'm not going to say you're wrong. I am, however, going to stongly imply that you're wrong.

And I'm gonna say I'm fine with that, think what you want, learn your own lessons, but just don't go around trying to convince people to think the same thing.

Well as we al know al that realy sells pop music to guys anyway is the fact that all the singers are 'hot' young women. Where in comparison the people who play metal/industrial/clasical/jazz/folk...Okay everything else is not so reliably 'good looking'.

So really what we have here is an image thing of pop/dance only attracts people for the sake of the 'sex appeal.' as well as that most teenage girls have dicided its good cuz all the singers are now their role models. Making it worse for everyone else.

As well as that you don't see people "riding the lightning" everyday so it could also be that shallow things like sex and drugs are easier to relate to then say The Planets Suite.

As well as that if we relate it to the extra credits video game music episode the message is simplicity. Which is now in everything but techno/pop/dance is quite rare as the technicality of all the pieces reflects the skill of the artist more than the looks.

Two songs out of the thousands of pop songs released every year have the same chord progression and rhythm, and "music is stagnating"? Sorry, no dice. All your example proves is how unimportant chord progressions and tempo are in the grand scheme of things. Everything has been done before anyway.

Blues and doo-wop weren't "designed", they just kind of "evolved". Then, after short periods of progress and then stagnation, other people took the music in new directions. Today's pop music is generally a distant relative of these styles, and sometimes even a close relative, spot the similarity:

Pop music is cookie-cutter music, of course it is. But it's never not been that. Innovation in popular music happens in very small steps, and for every two steps forward there's always a step back.
I never understood why Justin Bieber was smiling in that video if he was like "Baby Oh" and getting his heart broken.

Unsurprisingly, I agree with you completely BonsaiK, great post.

People get so pretentious over current Pop music. Ke$ha and Katy Perry might not be groundbreaking, but their music is fun and makes people happy.
Is it just a case of, popular to dislike whats popular?

That. Was. Brilliant. Made me lol throughout. Haz been favourited, for teh lulz.
My favourite line is probably "Punk Rock's just a joke, it's really just baroque."

It's amazing how many songs use that same progression, though. And that video is awesome at demonstrating it.

it doesnt matter if they're all the same! hell, all music is the same as all music. the real reason you shouldnt listen to pop is that it causes you pain. and then its repeated with every other song.
