Well when using Al I always have a shotgun, it provides a great way to catch them off gaurd,
sometimes a person will throw a plasmagrenade, think your dead, then you block it, and kill them. What I hate is when people wait and change up a plasma pistol. God that thing needs a nerf to just mak it EMP veichles, I hate when peopel walk around corners or travel in groups, one with a needle rifle/dmr andother with a charged pistol one knocks shields out other instantnt kills. God I hate the plasma pistol, so damn cheap.
Wow. I've yet to have someone charge a plasma pistol up while I AL.. that's annoying. I agree - the plasma pistol is the single most unbalanced gun in the game. It's unfortunately a starting weapon in team slayer, too..

Yeah Armour Lock just gives me 5 seconds of epic planning time, though i suppose AL would have the opposite heart rate effect on whoever it was used on "FUCKING ARMOUR LOCK NOOBZOR!"

This is the shit we should be reasearching, not waether video games cause violence and crap.

Edit:

So kills reduce it, combat raises it, being out of combat lowers it. some of that is as expectected, some not.

I wonder how this works in the long run, like playing over years?
Agreed. Would be interesting to see this compared to mild, medium and hard physical workout. No research can prove is gaming causes violence or not since there are too many factors. Looking at the effects gaming has on the heart however would be interesting.

He should try this while playing games like Halo, 5 Days a Stranger, I wanna Be The Guy and Little Big Planet. I have a feeling I Wanna Be The Guy would make the heart rate increase the most...

That's cool!

I've definitely had my heart racing after some intense battles... to be honest, I think WoW had the absolute best PVP battles I've ever been in compared to anything else including FPS games like CoD and BF.

It would be awesome if they made a cheap($5) little pulse monitor to plug into your USB port and it would show up on your HUD, and get recorded with your matches, that sort of thing I would really be interested in.
The comparison data you could get out of that would be really something.

I more curious what this would be like in an RTS.The combat is slower but there is more at risk and the combat sequences last longer.
The combat is not slower! With micro management it's a lot more hectic. And check out APM, it's a much better way to gauge your activity in an RTS. The biggest one I've seen is a pike at 800+, and that's just ridiculous.
I mean when you get into action you have to be constanly concentrating. But not so much with resourse gathering. With halo one second your alone the next your fighting and the next your dead. And deaths don't really affect you so much.

Switch Halo with Super Street Fighter IV or TvC and that's me.

I don't find the Armour Lock heart reading to be surprising at all. For those few moments, you can't be touched. That'd calm anyone down.

that does get bloody annoying, especially in elite slayer and the like. fuck that shit, you can hear your death coming too before you even round the corner "WOOOOOOOOHHHHHHH" *fuckk*
Dude, PPs can be easy to dodge if you have evade, but otherwise, you have run around the nearest corner, or else the lock on will get you.

OT: Wow, I can attest my heart rate is fluctuates while playing Reach, too. Especially if I'm killing enemies up close.

A secondary observation: The use of Armor Lock is immediately followed thereafter by a player death, which is usually a secondary decrease in heart rate.

Ugh, I hate armor lock...

Still interesting though. I may see how I feel after a rousing game of Civ.
I'd like to see how some pro Starcraft players' heart rates go. I doubt it would change much though. They always look so calm.

OT: I always thought I felt more relief after using Armor Lock to block an 'nade or splatter.

I knew I loved armour lock for a reason!
I can feel my heart slow when I use it actually kinda pulls me out of the mentality. It's all in the mind. This is a really interesting thread tho.

OT: A chart is ok but the information could do with more context. If he had the chart synced with the first person combat feed, or even a spectator feed, it would make it more valuable. As it is you can only make guesses that aren't informed.
I just so happen to have a few spare "render minutes", so here's the first-person feed. Full links to the video, including a downloadable "film" viewable in the Halo: Reach engine, here [http://www.bungie.net/Stats/Reach/FileDetails.aspx?fid=13101487]. As the Escapist forum software doesn't like iframe drop-ins like those used on bungie.net, I'm grinding a copy over to YouTube to insert here but it's taking a while tonight.

Alas, I lack the means to synch it to his heartrate chart. I'll leave that to other, more capable hands.

Can you slip that into the original post as an update? It'll make things clearer.

APM? Pathetic, reflexes aint no drive to my heart rate in an RTS

Wanna know what drives my heart rate in an RTS? (If yes, please follow) When I do a covert insertion/infiltration on a massive scale, praying to God that the enemy doesn't notice me untill my entire army gets into position.
Sneaking my last worker out of my base as it (the base) is being destroyed. So I can rebuild on the ashes of my empire.

To some up, my drive for my heart rate in Real Time Strategy Games comes from pulling off risky manuvers that often require a lapse in my enemy's knoledge.

Most of all that is to be expected, what I got from the chart is he needs a change of strategy.
More kills and less deaths.

Also, I used to get pissed off too when someone used armor lock all the time, along with energy pistols, but now I do it. I still hate needlers though.
