There are two reactions to this statement, I find.

One is the complete blank look that I'm expecting from half of you, and the other is sheer rage and Frankie Boyle jokes.

Meryl Streep, however,
wants to show you her "softer" side.

Along with Jim Broadbent, Anthony Head and Richard E Grant, and the Director of Mamma Mia, they're bringing Thatcher to the screens, again.

I'm not sure how the other countries saw her. I'm aware that some Americans thought of her as Reagan's close friend. And that the younger generation of the British, especially those in London, don't really know what all the fuss was about, but...

Could this work? Could Maggie "Milk Snatcher, Iron Lady" Thatcher actually make a good film?

(Caveat: I'm WELL aware that views from the North/South will be exceedingly aggressive, so try and keep it civil, chaps :))

Has the ingredients for an Oscar-winner.

Good film though? Possibly if that kind of class-based biopic (Frost/Nixon, King's Speech, The Queen, etc etc) is your bag. I'm not that fussed. Given the cast, the quality of the acting is likely to be high and the material can be portrayed in a suitably dramatic way without much embellishment. Plenty of meaty conflict.

This is going to be just another "The Kings Speech". These kinds of movies are specifically designed to win oscars by the formula (controvertial opinion/figure and their personal life, overcoming some difficulty etc etc) opposed to it being a genuinely good movie. Though i cant think of any of those since LotR...

Honestly I couldn't care less.
I am English, young and Political.
However on the issue of old Maggie, I was brought up in a Armed forces Conservative household whom loved her (Grandfather still wishes she was in power), and with these people the film is going to be a massive hit, and loved as it shows the "true" Thatcher.
My beliefs are more Left wing and I can understand why she is hated by the Socialists. Therefore the film is going to be hated and reviled for "trying to rehabilitate and evil women". So it will undoubtedly get mixed reviews and not get the box office revenues or the critical acclaim to amount to anything.

Thatcher? GARRRR!

She was not a nice person. She let personal vendettas get into her politics, and screwed over an awful lot of people. The Welsh coal mining communities are still suffering unemployment, poverty, etc. Just because she wanted to get back at the Trade Unions.

Mind you, that's just the person. that trailer looks well acted, Streep looks and sounds remarkably like her, and it will probably be very well written. But how would you feel if someone made a movie to show the softer side of say... Nixon, or some other political figure whose was stubborn and a large bully?

Giant, union destroying, barbed-wire knickers wearing ***** or not you can make a movie out of most things. Place her against John Major and tell me which is more unfilmable.

This amused me greatly

Tells the story of a woman who smashed through the barriers of gender and class to be heard in a male-dominated world. The story concerns power and the price that is paid for power, and is a surprising and insightful portrait of an extraordinary and complex woman.
And underneath in the comments
For our next trick, a biographical picture of Mussolini in which all that stuff about torture, attacking trade unionists, and racism in the streets is put in the background while we find out why he decided to shave his head. Oh Hollywood, you always get your priorities in order. Meanwhile, is Margaret Thatcher dead yet?

I'm fairly certain a film about her is banned from being screened in Ireland because of the Good Friday agreement.

I guess I'll hold off judgement until I see the movie. I myself hope they are more fair and show her as the cold ***** she was.

If you can't tell, I'm a bit biased. Too many years growing up listening to The Final Cut, a superb album btw. I'm one of the few who think it's not only on par with The Wall, but quite possible surpasses it. Also, not a Reagan fan by any means, so there's that.

I was sold on this as soon as you mentioned Anthony Stewart Head. Giles can make anything watchable.

I'll tell you what, in my mind going back over the PMs I had a complete blank on John Major he was just that forgettable. Like in the old Spitting Image shows he was the most bland/gray man ever.

OT: Movie might be interesting but it does sound like it is designed to generate a load of hype from controversy.

And yet, he's the one who had the affair with Edwina Currie.

I'll let that mental image tarnish you for life ;)

It's difficult to say but this film in all liklihood is going to be thatcher sympathetic
now as a man born in 1992 i missed her reign completely
but as a working class man i loathe every decision ive subsequently heard that she made
of course it's all likely to be biased information ive been fed
but i can't help but hate that vile, poisonous ****

I'm sure she's not an evil woman. Just an uncaring one
as for the film? i wont be seeing it until dvd release. i'm still curious as to how it's all going to be played out

I'd blocked that from my mind, thankyou for tearing it out of the dark part of my memories :/
Although by that point scandals like that were pretty run of the mill. Not that that stopped the press going on about it all the time.
