[HEADING=1]This Month In Forums

May 2010[/HEADING]

Welcome to TIEM Magazine's May publication of This Month In Forums! Where Escapist users like you submit the best posts and users to be honored in our monthly publication.

Submissions this month were aplenty, and offered the council a fair share of posts, threads and user to vote on. While a dramatic increase from what we saw last month, we still could use many more submissions.

But let's push that aside for now. Let's get to the what you all have been waiting for.

[HEADING=3]-Post of the Month[/HEADING]
If you know [user]Amnestic[/user] you know he has a tendency to get a few good chuckles out of people, often at the expense of others. Well on the 11th of May our very own High Priest of Haruhi decided to rip into a rather half-baked political thread and presented a rather hilarious counter argument that we guarantee will give you a few good laughs [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/534.193894-Our-Rights#6173150].

Unfortunately all this took place in the Publisher's Club, meaning that a good number of viewers will be unable to see this post in its natural habitat. In consideration of this hindrance, we will exporting it for your viewing pleasure.

A post echoing Fox News Talking points verbatim?

But let's break it down shall we?

"Since President Obama has taken office, he his almost doubled the federal deficit"

Source. I'd like to see the numbers on the federal deficit for Jan. 2009 and April 2010 (since we're still in May).

"and has created numerous new laws to tax Americans more. "

As far as I'm aware the only two new taxes were on cigarettes and tans. In fact, a great many people have recieved tax cuts under Obama [http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2010/jan/28/barack-obama/tax-cut-95-percent-stimulus-made-it-so/].

More than that, apparently taxes are at their lowest level since 1950 when Truman was President. [http://www.usatoday.com/money/perfi/taxes/2010-05-10-taxes_N.htm]

(See? I used sources!)

"the new federal health care is going to be paid by everyone that pays taxes, yet everyone will receive this health care. To me, it feels like I am going to be paying for someone to go the the doctor who doesn't have a job or is here illegally "

You already pay for people who don't have health insurance. See, what happens is people who don't have health insurance go to Emergency Rooms, recieve whatever care they can be given for free (since there's no way for them to pay such ridiculous costs) and the costs for the care gets funneled back into the insurance premiums for you.

What the recent healthcare reform bill is mandate that everyone have health insurance, which means you won't be forced to pay for others

"And if you don't have insurance and you don't get the federal mandated insurance, you get fined."

Yep. Imagine that, trying to force people to have healthcare. That bastard, trying to keep a country healthy.

"To me, that doesn't seem like we are getting a choice in the matter. We are being forced to do something a lot of Americans did not want to do."

You also don't have a choice in paying taxes for: The roads, the military, the postal service, the police, the fire service and a great many other things you take advantage of in your day to day life.

Furthermore, what "a lot of Americans" want is frankly irrelevant, for two reasons:

1) It's a bullshit statement with no quantity to it. For example, I could say "A lot of Americans want to give Amnestic a billion dollars and a night of steamy passion with Scarlet Johannson."

Well now you could ask for specifics (how many is 'a lot', for example) but since we're doing the whole political discourse thing, specifics are for suckers.

2) People don't know what they want. Ever. Especially when it comes to things they don't understand and when the water is then further muddied by all the misinformation and ridiculous notions passed down to them by the Powers that Be Fox News. Oh hai, Death Panels!

In short, you're wrong. THIS IS A SURPRISE.

[HEADING=3]-Thread of the Month[/HEADING]
Threads was where we saw most of the action this month. Despite having to compete against several other submissions, at the end of the day stood [user]danpascooch[/user]'s thread on May 23rd, titled Why you should support the "Other OS" Lawsuits [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.196734-Why-you-should-support-the-Other-OS-Lawsuits#6347461]. Detailing why people should support the lawsuits against Sony for its removal of the option to install a different Operating System on your PS3.
[HEADING=3]-Review of the Month[/HEADING]
Sadly, this past month saw the end of a review series known as Niche Appeal by [user]joethekoeller[/user]. Having finally burnt out after a while joe decided to give Niche Appeal a big damn send-off [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.199925-Niche-Appeal-Big-Damn-Anniversary]. A nice wrap up to a nice series. If only this was how so many other series would end.

Yes, I'm looking at you Lost.

[HEADING=3]-Poster of the Month[/HEADING]
Despite having to compete with several others this month for the position of Poster of the Month, none seemed to shine brighter than [user]Amnestic[/user], whose posts were the only ones to fill the Post of the Month inbox.

So Amnestic, for your brutal honesty [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/528.198521-Israel-attacks-a-ship-carrying-medical-supplies-the-world-reacts-appropriately-for-once?page=3#6483907] and helping to spread teh lulz [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/528.196871-Mosque-2-blocks-away-from-Ground-Zero-NYC?page=3#6364187], we here at TIEM Magazine award you the title of Poster of the Month.

And we hope you most certainly enjoyed your night with Ms. Johansen.

Amnestic surprised me. Never before have I seen a user post so much win in a month.

Anyway, here's to another post!

Only if people like you continue to send in more submissions. We were rather blessed this month, but we can always use more.

If I see anything that takes my breath away I will be sure to send it to you. (Although I have a project right now I might submit :p).

You'd have to have someone else submit it. Self-promotional submissions are blacklisted. You can read about it on our main page.

I'm not sure where the "few good laughs" come in...

It's just a post from someone posting their counter argument (that's well done) to one that was written rather poorly....
A good post, but you had me expecting hilarity :-/

I didn't really see what was supposed to be so humorous in it, either, but eh. Generally it was pretty good as a post, and a counter-argument, but I didn't really see why it should've gotten a few chuckles out of me.

I'm quite surprised to find my work seems to resonate so well with you people, or to find that I could be covered in an edition about the month may with a thread quite notably published on the 6th of june.
Submissions for the month's publication close when the ballots are handed out to the council members and open when the new thread is posted.

Think of it like the Film Academy and how their year doesn't abide by the calender as well.
