Honestly? I have no real clue because I've got a few games that I saw get fairly low scores that I had FAR more fun than the 9's and 10's reviewd games. Saints Row 1 and 2 vs GTAIV comes to mind, Saints Row CRUSHED GTA in my mind in every way and was simply just more fun in general. Does that make GTA bad? No I just didn't enjoy it as much. Did I care about the scores? No. I cared that I had more fun and know that review scores are worthless, it's better to see for yourself.

Three point scale, people dont understand that 1 is bad and ten is awesome with equal distance between each point on that scale. I'll answer this with my own question...
Why is it people always get upset when I point out all of the inconsistency in their religion and call their beliefs into question?
The answer to both is the same, it's part of the human condition and to go deeper will bring out the flame trolls.., and probably bring about WWIII.

When one suggests that something that someone has dedicated their lives to is less than perfect, some people make it out to be a suggestion that they were wrong to dedicate their lives to this thing and should of dedicated their lives to something more worthy. This angers people.
Usually it's IGN that garner the most rage and for good reason to as alot of the time they really are clueless about videogames.
Godhand being the most hilariously bad review I have ever seen. They gave it 3/10 while everyone else who played it gave it an 8 or more and regard it as a cult classic to an extent.
Sometimes reviewers just get it wrong though. I think games which require alot of hours to get the most out of the game get it rough, most likely as the reviewer has a limited time to play and review them and so judges it on what might be a mere portion of the experience. Other times they expect a game to be a certain way even though the developer never said it was such and so blast it through their own stupidity. Alpha Protocol being a clear example.

Validating their own opinions and interests can be pretty much the only source of self-esteem for some people, so when they hold something dear to their hearts, like a franchise they're a fan of, any contrary opinion is basically like a personal attack or an act of war, because they perceive it subconsciously as invalidating their identity and telling them that they're wrong, even though it's just a different perspective on the game.
Some people respond really violently and badly to the idea that they might not be right and feel a really excessive need to justify the things they like and prove that they are right and the other guy is wrong. Fandom just happens to be the biggest outlet for that over the most inane things.

I guess some people have a hard time accepting the opinion of someone else and their judgement of a game. Some are harsher some are forgiving. It's how long lasting but buggy games like Fallout New Vegas can still get high scores because they offer a large amount of gameplay, which in a more forgiving reviewer's eyes can deem it worthy of a high score.

Becuase people have no idea what those numbers even mean. What is the quantifiable difference in any game that makes it .5 better than another? There is no answers, becuase the numbers given to games are made up. So people think those made up numbers should be higher for games they like.
