...Wait, so Brokeback Mountain wasn't gay?

Words are just words. As the great George Carlin put it; "It's the context that makes it good or bad". Two particular cases are ****** and ******. In the end they're just words that I use occasionally as well, I'll admit, but ANY word offends me if it's used to personally attack a person or their interests.

But I would never, EVER use the word C******.

EDIT: Oh, you mean ****. **** is nothing. Just another one of those words deemed as "cursing"

I don't see how calling something gay funny, sorry but I must have a really dull sense of humor/sarcasm. As for offensive, well I find using a word that describes a group in a derogatory manner to be highly offensive.

Also your thread title is not the best, please reword it.

EDIT: I say the word and people obey
well its not a joke its just a completely generic insult its not like people saying it are insinuating, and i mean seriously saying that like it rough up the backside, its just... something you call someone. it doesnt have any real weight or gravitas, just like "hate" these days

1- Use gay however ya want. I've heard gay people say things are gay so whatever.

2- No word offends me, it's all sounds created by cords in your meat tube of a throat flapping about given meaning my people.

If you REALLY wanted to piss someone off don't even call them something derogitory, heck even racist doesn't work as well as my way. You mount your thumbs at your temples, extend your fingers and wave your hands up and down and stick your tongue out and go "Nyeh nyeh nyeh!" it makes people more pissed than you think, and the best part is? It's not derogatory and it's not racist so what are they going to call you out on? (not that I support racism, but I do support hilarious stuff)

Personally I don't really care what words people use, it's the sentiment that counts. If somebody calls me "a marvellous ****" I'm not offended. If somebody says I'm "not especially bright" I am insulted.

As for use of the word "gay" as derogatory I couldn't care less. I don't think it really means you're homophobic if you use it, I used to say it all the time when I was like 13. But I'm from Brighton [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT_community_of_Brighton_and_Hove] and we really couldn't care less what you choose to have sex with... as long as it's all consential. I don't think anybody gets particularly offended by it, not that I've ever seen at least.
I'm not sure what upsets me most, that you're completely right about Brighton or that you didn't say 'who' you choose to have sex with but 'what'. Of course, I'm not actually upset because both things are disturbingly accurate, hell, go down Dukes Mound or Devils Dyke in the dark (if you dare/are braver than me) and see what/who you find....

OT: 1) Doesn't offend me in the slightest and I don't necessarily see that using it in a conversational context is overtly offensive either. I have numerous gay friends (I refer you to the Brighton link above) and I'll quite often use the word 'gay' as a mock insult. Oddly enough, one of them classes himself as a heterophobe and calls me disgusting, in a 'joking but please don't put a girl near me' way, regularly and that isn't offensive either.

Long story short, I use it as a mock insult and consversational word and I'm fairly certain I'm not a bigot.

Oh, 2) None that I've found yet. I find bad spelling offensive though. Especially 'lose' being spelt 'loose' and 'paid' being spelt 'payed', they both make me want to cry.

I see people use "gay" in a derogatory fashion when they really can't think of an actual reason to dislike something, and just do so on principle. So I've always associated that particular use of the word with inarticulacy and stupidity. Seems to fit.

And I'm not really offended by any particular word. I've heard 'em all, and they don't affect me. Oh wait, one exception. I've heard people insult others by calling them a "jewbag". Not only is this hugely racist, but it doesn't make any fucking sense. Not even grammatically. If I hear that one more time, I swear I'm going to start making a hit list.
(Note: my family is Jewish, which I assume has something to do with why this is the only word that makes me want to cause grievous injury to the speaker.)

1. Brokeback Mountain actually was gay. As in: And by "c-word" I assume you mean Canary.
Nonono, he clearly means Cyan.

OT, there are no offensive words to me. A word is only offensive when you give it that power. But just because I believe that doesn't mean others do, which is why I always censor myself when I say words like F*CK.

To both I say; it's not the word that bothers me, but the bigoted prick using it.
I agree with this. I find it pretty darn irritating when people use gay as the sole filler for anything negative. The only reason I figure it got to be used thus was because it somehow was coined as slang for homosexual, and since many people like to diss on the homosexuals, it was used negatively, and now it's just some homogeneous word thing used to describe objects/people you disapprove of.

So it irritates me. I don't quite find it offensive though, not until as Guess Who says a bigoted prick is using it.

So question 1. How do you feel about the usage of the word "gay" as a derogatory description
It's just stupid. It's like saying "That's so bicycle" or "This thead is so happy". SquirrelisKing, I have a feeling you understand my point.

Question 2. What words do you find offensive.
There probably aren't any single words that offend me but I get offended when people say or imply that "skeptics" are "cynics".

ignorant douches

I just imagined a "hardcore gangster" type person responding to an insult like this...I suppose it might be insulting because of how meaningless the action is, like you're saying "You don't deserve an insult greater than what a third grader could give".

Seriously I've done it, people get so angry for NO reason. Guy flipped me off as he was trying to drive by the crossing lines while I was walking (with the sign saying cross for me) so I did that and he nearly ran me over. Dangerous, but hilarious
