As for Oak, at first I thought he actually showed up in this game but it's actually his cousin. So yes, Oak is still relevant for the series in some ways.
But he's not still handing out the pokedex? When did he stop doing that?

I have all Gen 1-6 Pokemon in my Pokemon bank, including Mew, Celebi, Jirachi etc, cause of that year long 'Heres all the event only pokemon' event.

I was looking forward to just having to worry about Gen 7 pokemon...but Sun and Moon was soooo bad.
What was wrong with Sun & Moon?
everything.
That tells me nothing. Care to elaborate, cause I'am curious to know why you and Saelune have such ire for it.
I get that it is more aimed at young children, but Children aren't actually mentally incapable, but it treats you like you cant even breathe through your own mental capacity.

Eventually Pokemon wont even need you there to play it with how much it wants to make everything so simple for you.
Some examples for those of us who haven't played the newer games?

Also, I was wondering. Is Professor Oak still relevant to the franchise? Like, is he still in charge of the Pokedex? Or have the other professors taken that over?
Honestly you really shouldn't listen to him, the fact that Sun and Moon did away with HM's makes it a huge step forward in my book. It gives up the illusion of freedom in exchange for giving you more characterization in the "gym leaders". Yes there are things that can be improved but I say as someone that lost interest in the series after Diamond and Pearl that it did a lot to make me interested again.

As for Oak, at first I thought he actually showed up in this game but it's actually his cousin. So yes, Oak is still relevant for the series in some ways.
Him?

Getting rid of HMs as they were is good, but the way they did it sucks. It is stupid to give the player Pok?mon that they don't own.

Uh, since like Gold/Silver. Or atleast Ruby/Sapphire. He is still the creator of it, but the others help him expand it in each region.

Profile details were wiped, so you can't exactly blame people for getting it wrong.

Oh... In G/S/C he went through all the trouble of going all the way to Jhoto to give the player a Pokedex, so I got the impression it was his thing to hand out Pokedexes.

I've caught them all in Pokemon Heartgold. I can heartily recommend using bulbapedia or other help at every step or you will miss out on some pokemon that have a low encounter rate in only a few area's. I did know where to find a yanma but the odds were still not helping. Took me 140 ish tries until I encountered one. Had I not known where it was I wouldn't have gotten it until much later. Also, you can probably get a Butterfree or parasect early on to get that high odds sleep powder (with compound eyes it has a 97.5% hit chance) or spore and maybe false swipe too. Otherwise nuzzle or thunder wave work too. Paralysis and sleep double catch odds.

Pfft, Bulbapedia. I'm gonna stick with The Perfect Guide!

They're solid platforms. I was definitely on the Nintendo side of the fence when I was a kid.
