It's my last day living at home. Tomorrow morning I'm headed to the Navy recruiter's office and will be driven out to a hotel. I'll stay the night there, and then the next day I'm gonna be flown up to Illinois for boot camp.

I doubt anyone really recognizes my name, but I just wanted to let you all know you've been great. This is the best forum community I've yet found. Thank you for being a terrific and fun bunch of people on a site loaded with great content.

If any veterans want to give me advice for boot camp, it would be much appreciated. If any anti-military people want to say how bad an idea they think it is to join the US Navy, feel free to do so. I'd be quite pleased if this thread turned into a discussion about the pros and cons of military service and the military in general.

See you man, hope everything in your future plans fair well. I don't know much about the military but I think it's important you do what you think is right.

You're right, I'm afraid I don't recognise you at all. xD

Nevertheless, good luck!

As for discussion:

I have nothing against the military, I think anyone who signs up is a pretty brave person. I don't think I could ever be in the military.

However, I do wish that we didn't have a need for a military. :l

My mudcrab avatar would probably be pretty memorable if anyone could tell it was a mudcrab. Thanks, though!

Honestly, I'm unlikely to have to ever serve in combat. The Navy doesn't do a whole lot of it these days to begin with, and my job is on the deck of a carrier, prepping for launches and landings. It's supposed to be the most dangerous job on a carrier, but it doesn't ever involve killing anyone. We'll likely be doing mostly relief work.

Thank you, sir. The military is a really good way to have goals and feel like you're accomplishing something while you figure out what you want to do with your life. I've always wanted to be a writer; perhaps I'll see something in my travels that will inspire me!

Well best wishes, I wished I had the same level of resolve that you do, not by joining the military just in general. Hope things turn! out well

Edit: sorry meant turn out well!

Well, that's good at least. ^^

I didn't mean just the shooting and killing other people though. Just the amount of physical work and discipline needed would be too tough for me. I'm a very unfit person. >.>

Oh yeah, it's obviously not for everyone. There's a lot of structure obviously that some would find confining, some people really can't stand being yelled at, some people hate the idea of having to shower and change with a bunch of other people, etc.

Personally, I think it's about perfect. I do best when on a strict schedule, but I'm not very good at motivating myself, and here's a way I can support myself without making decisions that will cut me off from future choices (I tried college for a while, but realized I didn't know what I wanted and was wasting time and money.)

I actually would love to be a writer, but I don't think I have anything worth saying. Maybe my time in the service/travels will inspire me somehow.
