You won't believe me but the best community i have experienced around a game was when I was playing CS:Source, the clan i was with, all the awesome people and ofc all the tasty drama!
I have been searching for something similar now but the bar has been set so damn high... Renegade Rangers Reloaded (r3) I will miss you bunch of wankers!

The Dark Souls community is pretty great, since it's more like a support group for those recovering from or still trying to get through the game. The messages people leave are usually helpful, and there are usually a few summon signs around to summon help. Also, once I got invaded by someone who just flipped around making gestures and then gave me a bunch of Titanite, including a slab. He killed me after that, but it was still a nice thought.

I've had a pretty pleasant experience interacting with The Secret World's community. Got lots of tips, got my life saved more than once by random strangers, never got insulted.

Tell me which server you play on please... because my experience has been quite the opposite.

Granted they aren't usually yelling at me because I am normally quite quick to at least grasp the basics but pretty much ever server I have been on has been full of people expecting everybody to be pros. I have only ever played on "rookie friendly" servers as well. I frequently remind players on those servers that if they want people to be excellent at the game they could always try playing on a server that isn't meant for beginners.
W-wha? Maybe it's because I bought the game when there was a massive influx of players, last Christmas if my memory serves me well, but all the servers I went in had really nice people in them. Mostly Australian blokes who were on the mic helping the team out.

Funnily enough, I came here to say Natural Selection 1, back when it had a community, and was going to end my post with a query as to whether this general good sportsmanship and niceness has continued into NS2 (which I'm unable to play because my computer is quite puny). It's good to know that it has.
Yeah there were quite a few people who moved over and I noticed they were especially compassionate and understanding.

Games with good communities? League of Legends of course.

Just kidding.

Guild Wars 2, in my experience, has a rather lovely community. I cannot count the amount of times I've been downed and seen someone blitz across the map to my aid and desperately battle - sometimes getting killed themselves - just for the sake of trying to rescue a complete stranger.
And one of those times, it might have been me. ;)

Oh no, I rescue people, sure ... but not because I like to help.
It's for the same reason I'll attempt 1v6 fights in WvWvW, 'cos gaming is about learning and improving ... and picking fights you're sure to win doesn't level up my skill.

So finishing a tough fight on my own and reviving people in fractals and such is a good skill to have, which is why I often practiced doing so.

That's how the game is designed - it rewards people for spontaneously cooperating.
In the overworld, due to everybody getting full rewards for everything, there's no downside to being helpful.

But ... if you mess up bad in a dungeon run or whatever, I'm not going to bother carrying.
See, when it's a team scenario and several other people are relying on you, it's a different story.

What I'm saying is, how nice people are, often times has as much to do with the ruleset they have to operate under, than their actual personalities.

In StarCraft, for instance, I only have to deal with opponents.
If they're shit, it's just a free win for me. If they cheese me, well, cheesing is low percentage play, so it's still mostly wins for me.
So, there's no reason for me to be mean in StarCraft.

In certain competitive team games, however, I've been known to chew people out so hard they quit the game for good.

Shall I be controversial? In all my years playing CoD, I've got to say I've always found the community really great. In online multiplayer you get people joking around, chatting and having fun, I've never heard any 10 year olds calling people faggots as the stereotype goes or making claims about your mum. Especially in zombies, the four-player teams really work together to survive and help each other. This is more noticable in grief where you have to balance helping your team, helping yourself and griefing, and the teamwork really shines through.

Controversial? Compared to MOBAS, online shooters almost feel like heaven to me. There might be just as many dicks, but shooters simply keep them busier.

Usually the smaller the community the nicer the people in my opinion its only when it gets to a certain size that people start being arseholes (always exceptions ofc as some people are always toxic).

Games that require teamwork and are competitive tend to have the worst communities in my experience, teamwork games come second and straight up competitive games come next all these three can have terrible communities.

But games dont usually have a single community even most MMORGS split their players.

I was surprised at the BlazblueCSEX community though I flat out suck at this game. I managed to scrub my way to a few victories but the amount of times I received helpful advice from better players, GGS (even when I won somehow) and even friend requests was amazing almost after every match I got at least a GG and I have only ever had one abusive message. Street Fighter IV vanilla and Injustice (especially earlier on) was completely different the game was filled with rage quitters and people who hurled abuse at you but its better now that the scene has shrunk a little again. Arc is still pretty niche I feel and so people tend to be better mannered as they just want people to play the games and improve.

So yeah I have had nice experiences with the majority or Arc system works players I have played, others may not have.

Juiceville MC was pretty cool for a community, although I haven't been there in a fair while.

Also the DayZ server I play on regularly is a pretty good community. Sure, there are dickheads that kill fresh spawns and others on sight but everyone seems to enjoy themselves and there's a lot of playful banter between the regulars as well as the newer guys. It also helps it's a pretty well moderated server too.

As far as online shooters go, I find that TF2 has a lot of very cool people. There's the occasional mic-spaming ass, but that's very rare, and the great majority of the rest are either quiet or have something funny and entertaining to say.

Back when it was a failing subscription game and there were 3-20 people per planet on each server, The Old Republic actually had some pretty cool people. I remember meeting this one guy on Tatooine who managed to start a completely improvised RP on a non-RP server, and ended up organizing the Sith on a mass attack on the Republic half of the map, with every single Sith player on the planet RPing according to their class. Reps never saw it coming.

This one's a bit weird, since it's a visual novel (With obviously no multiplayer component), but any time I see anything related to Katawa Shoujo, the community always impresses me. They're all nice people who just love the game so damn much without any sort of cynicism or snarkiness that I can't help but smile. Finding other fans of it is always a really heart-warming experience for me.
