Guild Wars 2, in my experience, has a rather lovely community. I cannot count the amount of times I've been downed and seen someone blitz across the map to my aid and desperately battle - sometimes getting killed themselves - just for the sake of trying to rescue a complete stranger.
Oh no, I rescue people, sure ... but not because I like to help.
It's for the same reason I'll attempt 1v6 fights in WvWvW, 'cos gaming is about learning and improving ... and picking fights you're sure to win doesn't level up my skill.
So finishing a tough fight on my own and reviving people in fractals and such is a good skill to have, which is why I often practiced doing so.
That's how the game is designed - it rewards people for spontaneously cooperating.
In the overworld, due to everybody getting full rewards for everything, there's no downside to being helpful.
But ... if you mess up bad in a dungeon run or whatever, I'm not going to bother carrying.
See, when it's a team scenario and several other people are relying on you, it's a different story.
What I'm saying is, how nice people are, often times has as much to do with the ruleset they have to operate under, than their actual personalities.
In StarCraft, for instance, I only have to deal with opponents.
If they're shit, it's just a free win for me. If they cheese me, well, cheesing is low percentage play, so it's still mostly wins for me.
So, there's no reason for me to be mean in StarCraft.
In certain competitive team games, however, I've been known to chew people out so hard they quit the game for good.
