I love the Switch, but I don't love this.

The idea is neat, if not something I would have picked up myself, but the pricetag is un-neat. It's cardboard for Bast's sake.

I've actually seen other kits like this (and I wish I could remember the brand name on them) though this is the first time seeing them paired with games. Personally, in spite of the price, I could see this as a fun little experiment to do with kids. Part of that "gamification of education" we've been hearing about.

Very interesting idea, though with it being primarily cardboard and rubber bands, I question if some of the elements will work as well as advertised. Still, should be great for kids or those who like constructing things and the physical interactivity with the Switch could make it even more appealing than Lego for some.

If something like this came out when I was a kid it would have blown my mind. I don't think I'll be picking these up myself but damn this is a clever out of left field idea. It's definitely the most "Nintendo" thing I've seen Nintendo do in a very long time.

Also it's really interesting and surprising seeing the different things the Joycons can do. They really crammed a lot of tech into those little things.

I dunno, is nearly 30 sheets of specifically printed and cut cardboard, plus reflective pieces, bands and strings, and all else for $10 really that big of an ask? The main cost of the $70 tag is the software at $60 after all

i really hope that they will sell cardboard kit without software. i have two kids, i do want two cardboard set, because each of the kids will want to draw and put stickers on it as they wish, but i dont want two software...

As long as there's a reasonable way to replace the cardboard bits when they inevitably break, I think this is freakin' nifty.

I mean, it's not for me, but I appreciate it for what it is. I'd have been all over this when I was a kid.

Mmmm

Its cool, and it opens up a lot of possibilities, but as it stands, it just looks like a bunch of mini games, with some really flimsy peripherals.

Its cool that Nintendo is doing something jazzy with their unique console, but as it stands, I cant see anyone sinking more than a couple of hours into the actual game.

I love the idea, but the fact that it's for kids is the problem here. It's cardboard. They're kids. I can see these toys lasting maybe an hour at most before they get destroyed.

very cute, Nintendo. Well done there, you have somehow out-cuted yourself and now I feel like I've downed a pot full of honey-coated kittens wearing flowery eye-patches all making 'meep!' noises as they snuggle comfortably in my stomach awaiting the land of natural slumber

make-your-own peripheral is a handy idea in many ways. it being a flammable is a bonus too

As someone who works with Cardboard a lot, the idea of playing Video Games through it is not appealing. Although overall, I do like this idea a lot.

I wonder if the Labo will start a rush of Cardboard-Trimmed Electronics?
Yes, cardboard will be the style of the future! The 70s had wood paneled electronics. The 00s had glossy plastic. The 20s will have corrugated cardboard!

It's a kids toy. There's nothing wrong with it and adult gamers shouldn't care because it's not a product aimed towards them.

As someone who grew up with construction toys like Duplo, Legos, and K'Nex this is making my inner 10 year old squeal with glee. Even to this day I occasionally break out my old K'Nex and make random shit. So while I know I'm probably a minority here, I'm definitely picking this up.

The engineering of these cardboard pieces is insane. The keyboard uses the IR sensor to read slips of reflective material that pop up and their position to determine tone.

Is it for me? No.

Would I have preferred another core game announcement instead? Of course.

It'll be interesting to see what instructables type things people manage to make based on the Labo kits and software though.

TECHNICALLY Nintendo also specifically said that this is also specially crafted "for those that are kids at heart" as well as just kids. :p

I'm thinking that, aside from kids and 'kids at heart' adults, gamer parents with young children might be interested in this as well. People tend to like sharing their hobbies with their kids. Nintendo Labo seems like it could be well suited for parent and child to spend quality time together.

It might not be a huge demographic, but I know it exists and is likely to grow as more and more gamers start having kids of their own.

exactly.

like i've always been shit at Arts and Crafts so Nintendo labo isn't really for me at all. knowing me i would probably fuck up and tear all the cardboard.

however like you said, parents who want to bond with their kids, and also people that DO love arts and crafty sort of stuff will absolutely love this.

i may be shit at art, but i love and appreciate what i can see people do with it :)

also, call it a "gimmick" as much as you like, but that engineering with how the IR sensor camera can scan each of those piano notes and also tell exactly which cardboard piano key the person is pressing, and then translate on the tablet screen in real time is pretty genius engineering in itself.
this is basically Nintendo bridging the gap between Virtual Reality and Actual Reality with this sort of shit.
