I can't believe Sony would reason with EA on this. I have been waiting for cross game chat for a while, and all we get is a glittery screen? If Sony doesn't add these things in a few months, I'm selling my PS3 and getting a 360. What are you going to do about it?
Cross game chat? we have that via text, or did you mean on headset?
Also, they've made it easier to see if you've recieved messages and how many friends you have online.
Not JUST a glittery screen.
I personally wish they'd make an update for the ps3 and psp, which allows you to play psone games on your psp, without the lag that sometimes happens from hardware issues.
your ps3 runs dx9 trying to run something as ancient as dx5 is difficult for it. (try doing it on your computer you will have massssssss issues)
dx9? 5? are you referring to DirectX, because I have no idea what you are one about?

TV ICON
all thats there is bbc iplayer i could use that anyway through internet browser or on an actuall pc, thanx more clutter. i want to go to sony and pile up a load of crap everywhere and give them ennoying shit and see how they like it!! death letters will be followed shortly u bastards!!
That's actually probably the best feature on the new firmware. Watching iplayer on a proper TV without pissing about with connecting my laptop to it.
im not sure u understood u could use bbc iplayer on ur ps3 b4 version 3.0 easily on the 3rd right opting is a columb and go down to find internet browser enter and press start to open address type in bbc iplayer and ur there (and can be bookmarked)

new avatars and themes, we were promised more avatars and movable themes!! on the thursday store update what was there? there were 3 pain themes that were crap and like 79p ffs! not even any avatars available.!
Go on the Japanese store and look for an 'Afrika' theme.

It's pretty cool, and it's the only one that's free; you'd have thought by the way they announced it they'd have made some more free ones or at least made them cheaper...
i was wrong actually they are game packs for pain, the only theme is a burn zombie burn for about £1.19

and how do you get onto the jap store? i only got a european account im not hugely bothered to make another one for not much extra stuff.

It's not that hard, if you're really bothered you can look on youtube for videos.

All you have to do is enter random Japanese letters but at one point you have to enter a number with a certain amount of digits. Can't remember how many but I think it's about 5.

The update is good overall. The "sparkles" actaully look 3D on my Bravia TV, and have a real wow factor.

But as an (ex)Xbox player, it seems like they're slowly introducing more of the aspects of Live to make it more accessible. This isn't a bad thing, it just feels that they're doing it bit by bit so that people don't shout "Hey! You just turned PSN into Live Overnight!"

Things like parties and chat need sorting out though, and the messaging system needs speeding up and streamlining.

how did they severely mess up things

the network is free
the achievements are the same AND they are planning on integrating it more with home and giving you rewards for getting certain trophies
the controllers have always been better, the rumble was taken out due to a lawsuit
blu-ray is better meaning you can do more things and better graphics all on one disc instead of multiple ones

oh and look at the failure rate of the two

gonna say everything is about equal up to the last two where the PS3 shines well above the 360
Just because the network is free doesn't mean it's better.... PSN has always had lag and connectivity problems. I have several friends who are PS3 owners and they have all said the service is not good. In addition, they've all said they tried the Wi-Fi and none of them use it because it makes it that much worse.

I'm not saying the trophies are bad, I'm saying they're shamelessly ripped off from XBox and forced down the developer's throats, whereas Microsoft had them in there from day 1. All of my arguments were about PLANNING.

PSN - Poorly planned, poorly executed.
Trophies - not planned, added as an afterthought.
Controllers - Probably the most poorly planned part of the system. Up until a few months from launch they were this boomerang design (http://www.joystiq.com/2006/05/09/ps3-boomerang-controller-tossed-doesnt-come-back/), and then they scrap it and give you guys the same controllers from the PS2 but with no rumble and a horrible motion detection system built in, not to mention "trigger buttons". Then, a year or so later they scrap support for the motion sensor and go back to rumble packs.... talk about poor decisions.
Blu-Ray - This was a gamble that only worked out for them because HD-DVD ended up conceding. It still puts unnecessary pressure on the developers to pimp out their graphics and lengthen their games.

XBox had planned poorly when it came to the heatsinks on their motherboards, but all of the latest generation systems have fixed this problem. So neither company is perfect but at least Microsoft had put some more thought into their system.

Holy flamebait. I probably shouldn't even touch this.
As a ps3 owner, I think maybe you should trade in, just don't expect to be any less frustrated.

XBOX live is just as bad if not worse for connectivity. it's because american internet SUCKS, they have horrible infrastructure. when i was at XBOX Live support, besides hardware "i can't connect to live" was the number 1 issue we had.

so much like at that time, it's your friends' internet that sucks not the psn, i've never ever had an issue with connecting to the PSN

I'm not saying the trophies are bad, I'm saying they're shamelessly ripped off from XBox and forced down the developer's throats, whereas Microsoft had them in there from day 1. All of my arguments were about PLANNING.
right and when you restore your gamertag you lose a bunch of your achievements and yet when you move your trophies you don't, hmmm yes the achievement system works a lot better

btw m$ also shoved them down the throats of developers and told them they all must support achievements

Controllers - Probably the most poorly planned part of the system. well they kept the design cause well the PS1 controller was still a good design, why fix what's not broken?

also they still have the sixaxxis controller WITH the rumble support, also it's a pretty good system compared to the one the 360 has .... oh wait that's right they don't have one. then there's the 360 Eye toy they are coming out with

also the rumble wasn't included due to a lawsuit that was happening at the time over a patent on the rumble. it was rather common knowledge

XBox had planned poorly when it came to the heatsinks on their motherboards, but all of the latest generation systems have fixed this problem. So neither company is perfect but at least Microsoft had put some more thought into their system.
really they did? it has a massive failure and they KNEW about it and yet they still pushed it out so people can buy it regardless of the fact that it fails horribly. also the issue of it not failing currently on the new hardware hasn't been proven

their achievements and xboxlive have tons of issues, so really how was it better planned?

Got to agree with that.

Btw, just on it's own little thing, is there a way to play PSP games on the PS3? I think that there is and I am just being lazy in figuring it out.

Does anyone else think it's silly to have no problems with your PS3 before this update comes out that and then all of a sudden abandon one of the greatest gaming experiences of all time just because you can't talk to your friends via headset? Here's what you do, you take your bluetooth headset, link it to your phone, then just CALL your friends while they're playing their video game of choice. And I would think that the only reason Sony hasn't focused on Cross-Game Voice Chat yet is because not a lot of people have asked/really cared.

Yes, there is, you do it via remote play and having a psone disc in the ps3. but there's a lag. Unfortunately if you want to play anything other than turn based rpgs, or a game like final fantasy 7,8,9 then you're out of luck. I tried playing Soul Reaver, but it lags too much. Any graphically challenging game (forget Metal Gear Solid) is unplayable.

It seems that no matter what I say you're about to defend PS3 to the death, and the last thing I want is to get into a flame war with a complete fanboy that will say just about anything... like...

"I used to work for XBox Live Support"

or

"Microsoft knew their systems would RROD and pushed them out anyways"

So how about you go and play your PS3 with the controller that resembles what you would get if the PS2, Dreamcast and Wii controllers had an orgy, and I'll stick with playing my 'horrible' old XBox.

i'm just pointing out holes in your arguments and doing it quite easily

btw how would saying "i used to work for Xbox live support" mean i'm a fanboy? and also they were aware of the errors with the console, when there's been several reports of them being made aware of this before the release

sorry presenting facts isn't being a fanboy, it's presenting facts that prove your flimsy arguments wrong

btw the PS3 controller is the same one the PS1 had, they kept it for the PS2. rule #1 of design, if it's not broke don't fix it. this is why the xbox had to redesign it's controller, everyone complained about it

You're not pointing out holes... how is Microsoft taking a chance on the RROD bug a hole in my argument? I admitted that Microsoft screwed up on that part of the hardware. You're basically proving my own point.

And if the PS3 controller wasn't 'broke', why did they take out the rumble? Xbox controllers had rumble from day one... Also, why did they add those horrible hybrid button/triggers instead of keeping L2 and R2 as buttons? Why the sixaxis? Because it tried to take the best parts of the other controllers (triggers from XBox, motion sensing from Wii) and put it into it's own hybrid.

The designers had no real idea what they wanted to do with the controllers from the get go and tried to add a little bit of everything, which only served to screw everyone up. I liked the PS1 and 2 controllers, but the PS3 controller is a piece of shit. Probably even worse than the original XBox controllers. At least XBox listens to its fanbase.

ummm the PS3 took out rumble due to a lawsuit over a patent infringement, it was a pretty well known thing, might want to look it up and also realize that i had mentioned it before

ok so if the PS3 controller is a piece of crap, then the PS2 and PS1 controllers would also be crap cause they're the same, minus the wire. your logic fails cause they're the same controller

Must've outsourced development ideas to Xzibit

"Hey Dawg I hear you like TV so we put TV on your PS3 so you can watch TV on your TV"
lmao. Well spoken XD.

OT: I do miss the playstation 3 chime everytime i start up a game, and ugly boxes around my friends list need to go. other than that, update was good.

OP: you know, you don't have to look at the glittery screen right? just get a wallpaper off your computer, or better yet, use google on your PS3 and get something from there *gasp* my god!
