There's been some speculation that because the oil and mineral deposits in North are becoming more viable, that the Russians are pressing their land claims to the Arctic. The problem is the land claims they're pushing for have always been within traditional Canadian territory. It's a gold rush mentality. The Danes have been doing a little sabre rattling over the whole issue as well. The prevailing idea is that unless you can efficiently patrol\protect your claimed territory it's up for grabs. I'm sure the Russians just timed their little display for added effect.
