Holy shit. Holy, holy shit. I just got accepted into the limited Steam Beta. Yeah, I'm so happy. :-D

To business, then. What are your thoughts on Steam for Linux? Will we see a shift away from Windows as the primary OS for gaming? Will we finally get good driver support in Linux? Will us penguins then finally freaking standardize the package managers to not make us feel stupid for us less computer savvy people who can't deal with tarballs and tarzips[footnote]They both are names for zip/rar files containing a program's source code. This is then left up to us Linux users who aren't using Ubuntu's, Fedora's, Arch's, etc repositories (think the App Store as a very simple analogy) to build the programs from scratch. In theory, it's pretty simple (3 steps basically) but in practice, it becomes an exercise in frustration. Fortunately, I don't need to do this often.[/footnote]?

So, yeah. Here's what I think.

I'm pumped. Gaming on Linux shouldn't be a problem with the technology as OpenGL outshines DirectX any day. All we need is proper driver support, something Valve's helping with. Hope AMD/Intel/Nvidia cooperate with Valve as this goes on. I also hope that the major OEMs see that Linux isn't a failure as Windows 8, Secure Boot, and the price of MS software have REALLY been pissing off people lately. Windows 8 is ... okay, but the fact that it's clearly focused on the average home user is a bit stifling to my inner computer geek. Also, the cost of Windows does not outweigh it's benefits. If MS expects me to pay 200 USD for a full copy of Windows 7 Professional (Home Premium doesn't cut it for our family), they can go fuck themselves. Lets not talk Office, alright? That's 400 USD gone that would be better spent elsewhere. And Secure Boot? Let's just say that Secure Boot's the reason why I'm building any new PCs that arrive in my house.

Well, that escalated into an anti-MS rant rather fast. Anyway, what are your thoughts about Steam for Linux?

I fully support it. Pretty much the only reason I'm using Windows at the moment is because it's easy to play all of my games on it. You can bet that if a majority of games that I play get ported to Linux, I would definitely ditch Windows as my primary operating system.

As far as the impact that it will have, I think that Steam for Linux will have about the same impact as Steam for Mac. It won't have the universal support that Windows does, but it will convince a substantial number of developers to make ports, and will make it a valid gaming platform, even if it isn't ideal.

Anything that makes linux a more viable gaming platform is great in my book. Its always nice to have options when it comes how you do your gaming. As for how successful it will be, I imagine it will be at least as successful as steam on mac as long as other developers follow Valve's lead in making Linux versions. I imagine the indies will jump right on board if the humble bundles are anything to go by. As for will be a wider success, I have no idea.

What's more it will have the by-product of better graphics drivers for Linux. Nvidia already released a beta driver which they claim vastly improves their cards performance in Linux distros. So hopefully it will prove to be a step in the right direction.
