Holy shit. Holy, holy shit. I just got accepted into the limited Steam Beta. Yeah, I'm so happy. :-D
To business, then. What are your thoughts on Steam for Linux? Will we see a shift away from Windows as the primary OS for gaming? Will we finally get good driver support in Linux? Will us penguins then finally freaking standardize the package managers to not make us feel stupid for us less computer savvy people who can't deal with tarballs and tarzips[footnote]They both are names for zip/rar files containing a program's source code. This is then left up to us Linux users who aren't using Ubuntu's, Fedora's, Arch's, etc repositories (think the App Store as a very simple analogy) to build the programs from scratch. In theory, it's pretty simple (3 steps basically) but in practice, it becomes an exercise in frustration. Fortunately, I don't need to do this often.[/footnote]?

So, yeah. Here's what I think.
I'm pumped. Gaming on Linux shouldn't be a problem with the technology as OpenGL outshines DirectX any day. All we need is proper driver support, something Valve's helping with. Hope AMD/Intel/Nvidia cooperate with Valve as this goes on. I also hope that the major OEMs see that Linux isn't a failure as Windows 8, Secure Boot, and the price of MS software have REALLY been pissing off people lately. Windows 8 is ... okay, but the fact that it's clearly focused on the average home user is a bit stifling to my inner computer geek. Also, the cost of Windows does not outweigh it's benefits. If MS expects me to pay 200 USD for a full copy of Windows 7 Professional (Home Premium doesn't cut it for our family), they can go fuck themselves. Lets not talk Office, alright? That's 400 USD gone that would be better spent elsewhere. And Secure Boot? Let's just say that Secure Boot's the reason why I'm building any new PCs that arrive in my house.
Well, that escalated into an anti-MS rant rather fast. Anyway, what are your thoughts about Steam for Linux?
