Thoughts on the battleborn beta?

I downloaded the battleborn beta on ps4 this weekend to try it out. I would like to know the impressions of those who tried it out.

As for my. My impressions were quite negative to be honest. I played it for a couple of hours and i am not impressed. As far as the singleplayer goes it was actually pretty fun. There were two levels availble in the beta, each took me about an hour to complete. But that was the first problem although i enjoyed them, i thought " well how many levels in this game going to have?". You see if it took me a little under an hour to beat the first two levels, im going to assume it would take about that to beat everye level. Which would mean that I'd have to pay 60$ for about 7-8 hours of singleplayer. No dice.

Now there are many different battleborn to choose from ( 25 IIRC) but i really don't see myself replaying the levels with each battleborn. Hell tbh i don't see myself doing it with just two. So while the two levels provided were fun, i don't see it as having any lasting power.

How about the multiplayer. Well , it's a MOBA with borderlan skin. Anyone who says it's not a MOBA is lying. Sure it have gearbox little spin on the genre but its a first person MOBA. Not a perticularly bad one but it wasn't outstanding by any means. My main problem is that, in the 8 games i played in multiplayer i ( and i assume) everyone i was playing with had no idea what was going on. There was a little explinatiom before each match ( which is tiring as hell to listen to the 4th or 5th time) but ultimately i had no idea what was going on. Which is bad because i actually play mobas ( well mostly smite). I got the general idea. Two teams, one ( or multiple depending on the mode) lanes, destroy objectives , push to the end. The problem is i had no idea what my objectives were, where they were or what role i was suppose to play or where. Every single one of my games turned into a Team death match with bots. We won some, we lost some, no one knew wtf was going on.

Honestly i was dissapointed. I uninstalled the game and went back to smite.

I played one match a while ago. Then I deleted it and never looked back.

Boring. Just so completely boring. Not the kind of boring where nothing is happening and it's just not clicking and you aren't having fun - The kind of boring that assaults your brain, that makes you realize right away that every second spent doing this is a waste of time.

Is one match maybe not enough to properly feel the game out? Perhaps. But it was so bad that the game would have to become the GOTY on the second match to make up for it.

I'm with you, but to be fair I only managed to get one match out of the beta before it ended. Well I think it ended, it wouldn't let me log back in after my first match. But to be fair, I wasn't overly upset by not getting another go. It seemed kinda Boarderlands-y with the sense of humour and its pretty colourful. But that was about it really. No one really knew what was going on or where to go and it did seem a case of go to an area, defeat some enemies go to another area and do the same again.

I was pretty bored before I got stuck on some scenery and the rest of my team failed the objective. I would of like to of played more to get a better idea of what its like but seeing as I didn't get to, what I saw didn't inspire me to buy it. I will see what the reviews say but I have a feeling it going to be the same sort of lukewarm response Destiny and The Division have got.

Is it bad that I have a hard time even remembering Battleborn? Like who even talked about it? Compared to Overwatch it just kind of...didn't really exist in the minds of anyone unless someone wrote an article on it.

Gameplay is fine if you ask me.

Has the decency to be fast paced, team work is important and it has both a sizeable PvE and PvP portion.
For PvE there are difficulty options to spice things up (normal is too easy imo) and I personally really enjoy the boss battles and all. And in the future there will be more PvE maps, so....

Can't really comment on PvP since I buy it for PvE. But it is definetly a day one buy from me, placed a pre-order months ago.

Got around to playing BB for a few hours. About 3 PvE and 1 PvP matches. The PvE stages are likely not the first levels of the final product. But yea, you really have no idea what your doing and why. Just pretty much going with gaming basics of point and shoot at whoever shoots at you. PvE is rather fun to be honest, although I did like Destiny.

The PvP definitely has a MOBA design and feel to it. If people get annoyed with The Division bullet sponge enemies, they should give the Battleborn PvP a go. I only managed to kill 2 enemies cause they take like 3 clips to kill. And since these are actual players, they can run away to heal once they get the drift they won't beat me in a given scenario. And that's not a hard thing to do, since the map was large with tons of walls and corners to run behind. Along with turrets and defensive structures behind enemy lines. So its definitely a very team based game. And is better suited for gaming with friends who can work together and use mics, than playing with random people.

Pretty much how I feel. I think it's going to get lost in the wake of the Overwatch hype, irrespective of whether it's any good as a game in its own right.

Theres also paragon that is making an appearance. It's kind of a shame all 3 games are coming out close together.

But back to battleborn. I think it would have been better to either cut the single player and make it a f2p game. Or cut the multiplayer and make it a true borderlands spinoff.

As it stands now it is underwhelming.

I do have to agree that unless the Borderlands fanbase jumps on BattleBorn, its gonna flop. Its certainly not the kind of game for the CoD crowd who wants to run and gun competitively. And asides from the kind of coverage and marketing Blizzard can do. Gearbox doesn't have the resources and staffing to update and create new content at the rate Blizzard can. Which as we saw with Destiny and big PC games, is going to be an important factor in sustaining a large community.

Doesn't exactly show a good sign that very few people here have tried the BB beta, or responded to this thread. Meanwhile that buttgate discussion generated much more attention. And another thread on Overwatch had positive things to say about the game. With some people hyped for the release. Or looking forward for a chance to play Overwatch.

But asides from that, I look forward to trying the Doom open beta this Friday the 15th.

I really don't think it's Overwatch Hype tbh. Like, I don't follow Blizzards stuff all that much, but Overwatch just STICKS in my mind. I can't NOT remember Tracer and William if nothing else. It has a strong signature presence.

But Battleborn? Eh? I don't know. It's just horribly forgettable in the most forgettable sense possible. Who's their trademark character? What's the trademark look?

It's just not interesting. That's not to say it will be a BAD game by any stretch. But it's definitely missing something to grab the audiences attention.

It's a little said to hear people not liking it because it looks cool. You have dozens of characters each with neat sounding abilities, but I guess sounding and looking good means little.

I mean in the grand scheme of things yeah. It does mean little if your expecting people to shell out $60.00 plus assumed micro transactions to play the game. That's not necessarily a bad standard.
Nobody will like your game really quick if the underlying mechanics aren't fun to play.

That being said I don't think anyone is really contesting that it's a polished and well made game. It's just that it's not really standing out at all.

You remember William so well that you got his name wrong. It's Winston.

(I'm not actually making a point here. Just being a smartarse for the joy of it.)

Overwatch has a very Saturday Morning Cartoon/Anime feel to it, makes it stick in the mind and pop a lot. Battleborn is more esoteric sci-fi, like Douglas Adams, the weirder elements of the Culture books or the two sci-fi books Terry Pratchett wrote. Cool, but just doesn't have that 'pop'.

At least I remember he's a Gorilla. That counts for something right?
