Thoughts on the Resistance series?

I just kind of accidentally bought the third game. Saw a cheap, used copy on Ebay with a few bids already on and put down a few cents more over the last bid thinking I probably wouldn't win. Next time I log on I find I did in fact win it. So I should be expecting that in the mail in a few days.

Now I've never played any of the Resistance games before. I played the demo to 3 and liked it enough and I've heard a lot of good the series from longtime fans, enough to pique my interest. I really just want to know some of your opinions on the games, especially whether the previous games are worth my time. I'm especially intrigued with the second games multiplayer. Seemed kind of s step back to lower the player count from 60 to whatever it is now. I actually though about picking up the second game but fear nobody plays the online anymore, although when I had MAG and Bioshock 2 not too long ago and never really had much trouble finding mostly full lobbies.

So... what should I expect?

If you have the third one then I wouldn't bother with the other two.

They fall right into that grey zone of just-another-bloody-shooter.

Although I suppose you could do worse if you're looking to kill some time and you can get them dirt cheap.

The first one is kinda hard, but I had fun playing it. The weapons are really fun, especially the Auger.

The second one, well, that one kinda sucked. You don't get to carry the same amount of weapons you did in the first one, if I remember right you only carry two at a time, which is odd because of who the developer is and the kind of guns you run across. The ending was cool though.

The third one is amazing and I really like the character. The battles you run across are both fun and frustrating, and at least you feel like a badass after you killed them which is more than I can say about the second one.

For the second game I'm really just interested in the multiplayer. I mean I'll play the single-player but the online with the 60 player count is what's really attracting me to it. It's just that I'm pretty sure nobody plays it anymore, at least not enough people to get a full game going.

R3 Question I'm Sure Nobody Will Be Able To Answer: Can you somehow turn the Mastodon songs off on that bit of DLC they released a month or so back? Because while I like horde modes, I hate Mastodon.

Well, if you're interested in the R2 multiplayer, I can describe it in one word: CLUSTERFUCK.

The maps are big, but the area people typically spawn in are in a small radius that moves around. Secondly, grenades are ridiculous. Especially in those 30v30 matches you'll find the best way to get kills is to sprint to the nearest clusterfuck and toss a grenade, and when you know someone is about to kill you; throw your last grenade at their feet. Why? Well, because in the Resistance world, grenades have a delay of about 1.5 seconds and reduce everything in a 20 ft span into entrails.

Another problem is the lack of variety of modes. Oh, there are 5 different modes to play, but whats left of the community only plays TDM or DM, and nothing else.

The 8 player co-op is the only thing I can recommend. There's 8 maps, plenty of missions, decent difficulty level, and lots to unlock. only until I was lvl 22 did i start getting bored.

Well, you picked a good place to start. The third one is a brand new main character and the story is all new. All you need to know about the other two games is summed up in the opening cinematic. Aliens invade. Hale fights. Hale dies (at your hands). Now have medicine for infection.

I think the first game is the best out of the three. The battles felt epic, especially when you were fighting alongside countless British troops. It was nice not being the only one shot at--or doing the shooting. The second one was...meh. Unless you REALLY love the story, you don't need to play it. I have it because I do love the story, but it is certainly the weakest of the three by far. The developers listened to that and brought back a lot of the good stuff for the third game. The multiplayer was a blast though. Only time I killed 10,000. Getting in a 60 person fire-fight was amazing. I loved getting to the other side of the map where no one was, and sometimes I'd just sit there and watch the battles play out. Or pick people off with a sniper rifle.
On a sadder note, the series is no longer being made my insomniac. I say this because the second and third games said that there's an alien race out there even more powerful than the Chimera. I was really looking forward to seeing where they went with that. Was hoping 3 ended with the new aliens showing up. Now though, I don't know...I'm just upset that they'd leave something like that unfinished. There's still hope though, as they said they were handing it off to another company. We'll wait and see.

The third is the best in terms of...well...everything really. And works great as a stand-alone title, too.

So, Resistance 3 is awesome. I liked the first one, too, but it's a little dated by now.

And 2...I don't think it's awful, but I never beat it. Take that for what you will.

The first of the series was the greatest. It built up a decent story with impressive mechanics, and just down right fun (especially co-op). The second edition didn't improve with gameplay, but massive built up the story and made for a thrilling sequel. The third took the great building story and just through out the window as it was complimented with cartoony graphics, poor plot, and overall bad gameplay (those who have the PS3 had to pay for the online anyway as well.)

First is Best, Second is Great, Third is Awful.
