Thoughts on the sexualization of the new Fatal Frame?

Heck I didn't even know they where making one, now I find out clock tower is getting a reboot too!? Resident Evil and Silent Hill (under silent hills) won't be due out till a lot later. I love the fatal frame series and with the main characters anyway thought their outfits where cute but not ones I'd go wearing for say ghost tours. In fatal frame 3 I didn't however like the breast exposure for the boss (even if in the story you could say it correlates) while I could overlook it partly because she was trying to murder me and partly because I could say she's wearing a skin tight blue shirt it did get annoying. However giggle physics doesn't belong in the series and if they really don't give me something else like a great plot I won't buy it based on her chest will annoy me part of why I dropped out of DOA its just ridiculous looking and makes you unable to take the game seriously its like if all the male characters showed up in banana hammocks (main, side characters and male bosses included) you couldn't take the story as a serious experience.

sight...when will these useless sexualization/feminism threads go away. its not that much different from old fatal frame games and more to point i dont see problem with games having sexualization considering holywood horror genre sells with sex majority of the time.

Uhh, "sexualization" is a needlessly loaded term. This is "fanservice", that's all. Lots of anime-inspired things have it, it's a genre thing.

Thoughts?

`Wow those boobs look really really dumb, like the people who design these must have seen a boob at some point right? I don't get the appeal of helium boobs`.

That pretty much sums it up. ^

You say this about a game made in Japan from Japanese people who have been known and accepting of sexualisation in some of their games and then we have a Western game like Skyrim which has been modded to hell and back chock full of women mods and people showcasing mostly women mods like MMOxReview, the guy cares only for the T&A mods most of the time and only women, one of his latest mod reviews had a random giant with a censored dick and he got a bit mad about it, I just rolled my eyes due to how unfair he is when it comes to sex appeal.

https://www.youtube.com/user/MMOxReview

Seriously though this isn't as bad when it comes from Japan, I more or less expect it but when the West does it it appears lecherous especially when it's to be the popular mod first instead of actually trying to add gameplay fixes, tweaks and environmental mods, it's almost always women/dildo mods first.

Don't bet your life on that assumption. :p

But yes, on a more serious note, perhaps because boobs don't behave thus in reality, it is that they behave so in games. I think it's more that the game tries to imitate anime boobs than realistic boobs which leads to this end. Don't assume everything in games is aiming to be realistic. Especially if it's from Japan. Japanese games always try to attain the anime ideal representations over the real world grimy realism one of western games. That's the cause of this. It's just a genre thing really.

Her breasts appear to be possessed by some unknown entity. Plot twist, clearly this is important to the story.

Generally speaking, I am against the sexualization. To a certain extent. Let me explain why by hitting each of the three points of sexualization you touched on:

1. Sexy unlockable costumes: On the fence. They take away little from the game as they are always optional. I don't care if the developer likes to dress their dolls in lingerie and I don't care if anyone likes to look at those dolls in lingerie.

2. Wet clothes that get see through (read: actually look like they are wet): Big plus for me. Adds very effectively to the atmosphere and from what I can tell doesn't actually make it very see through at all. Especially in a horror game, this effectively adds to the weight of the environment.

3. Excessive boob jiggle - Not only does this have no place in a horror game, in my opinion it doesn't even have a place in porn (outside of some very specific fetishes,) it looks stupid and isn't even sexy.

Can add to it yes.

I think... that says more about your outlook on sexuality than anything else. I sincerely doubt they added jiggle physics to add to the horror atomsphere.[/quote]

Jiggle physics, no. That adds nothing. Unless they are going for that unique form of creepy that happens when attempted sexiness falls deep into the uncanny valley.

But sexuality, properly used, can communicate powerlessness. Personal sexuality is one of the most private things associated with a person. For many people revealing their sexuality is an experience that makes them feel emotionally vulnerable.

Horror games are all about making the player feel vulnerable, usually by sympathy towards the avatar. A good game will utilize both physical vulnerability and emotional vulnerability. Consider the example of the wet, clinging, partially transparent clothes brought up by the OP. It isn't that sexy and is, in reality, only a little bit more revealing. The effect is fairly subtle, but it adds a level of emotional vulnerability through sexuality. The modest and sensible white blouse is suddenly more revealing than was intended - and the character has no control over the matter. It's not much, but it does to add to the general feel of vulnerability and helplessness.

I think it is also worth noting that sexuality can also be used to communicate power. Like in the case of Bayonetta, where her sexuality makes her a significantly more powerful presence.

Sexuality, male, female, whatever, is a tool that can be used to a variety of effects and purposes in game design.

It doesn't.
On the other hand sexualizing characters in places and ways were it wouldn't happen in a coherent story and is therefore the result of some higher up deciding to throw eye candy to the audience seriously weaken the suspension of disbelief.

Better bump them with a post expressing your outrage. That will make them go away faster!

OT: Fatal Frame wasn't even a very good game. Where's the sexy version of Amnesia, or Amnesia: A Machine for Sexy Pigs? That's where the real action will be.

I knew that Fatal Frame had alternate costumes of that nature, so I guess it was only a matter of time before breast physics were included.

And who knows maybe a scene like this will have some context that strengthens the game's story line. I have to say that I doubt it, but It's not like I can understand what+s she's saying to even tell.

It is a trap, you pay to much attention to the sexy and the ghosts will get you. Is it an absolute necessity? No, but it could provide a simple distraction for people to get caught out by and end up dying or whatever, eh.

Um... okay? So her boobs jiggle. Hell, it doesn't jiggle that much.

Are you people really gonna be that distracted by it? For me, I'd notice it for a second, and then never pay much mind to it afterwards as I continue to play the game. I can't see myself being like "Ugh! her boobs are jiggling! It's distracting and I'll never get used to it in this possibly several hours long game!"

Maybe there'll be an option to turn it off, like in DOA5. Or make them even jigglier. Whichever you prefer.

If the games is built like the others I will be to busy fast drawing the camera obsucra to make sure the damn ghosts don't get the jump on me. I dont see this as being that bad since most players will be too busy focusing outward on the environment and looking out for attacks. That not to say there wont be pervs that will be using 3D tools to get upskirts on the characters much like they did for the previous games.

lol I watched a bit of a play through for this game and I honestly didnt notice until it was pointed out. I do hope we actually see a localisation of this game the WiiU needs games like this and Bayonetta 2 and Xenoblade X and any others outside the traditional Nintendo IP umbrella.

Seemingly little known fact but in DOA5 you can actually alter the jiggle physics so you can make it go from ridiculous to completely off so in effect everyone should be happy but ofc thats not true because the fact the choice is there is a problem for many.

Gotta be honest though the jiggle physics in this game and the see through clothing shiz neither make me want to buy the game more nor repulse me if its available I would buy it on the strength of what I have seen i.e its horror and the way it uses the WiiU pad at least a little creatively unlike so many other titles. I never finished the first Fatal Frame or Project Zero as I knew it but its definitely one of my more favoured horror games.

I don't see a problem. They do that in real life, you know.

Why should characters be plastic barbie dolls that have no physics?

As Arnold says, SHTOP VINING!

Haunting Ground was a horror game with a female lead in a less-than-ideal outfit (not being worn by choice, exactly, it was either that or a towel she apparently had to hold up at the time) for being chased through dark corridors by psychopaths, and I wouldn't say it detracted anything from the experience.
I'm not sure about the new FF's protagonist, but any possible sex appeal on Fiona was stomped flat for me when I understood the intentions of her pursuers. It seemed to me that oogling her for even a minute would make me just as creepy and evil as they are, lusting after (or hoping to rip certain organs out of) a weak, near-defenseless innocent that just wants to get away. The unlockable fetish outfits are, in my opinion, nothing but disturbing for much the same reasons, but maybe that's just me.

I've never actually played a Fatal Frame game before, though. Is the context of the (from what I understand) primarily female leads remotely similar, or is this series more like Resident Evil, where the monsters attack leopard-pattern miniskirts with exactly the same visceral enthusiasm as they do grizzled boulder-punchers?

TD;LR: I don't think fanservice automatically kills horror, but it can look a tad silly. (Like a hilarious frog outfit) Maybe it's just whether or not the target's being attractive makes the killers' reactions to them all the more creepy, for some?

Underage girls looking sexy?
Yep, it's Japan!

I REALLY loved the other games in the series, so I'm willing to give this one a go regardless.

Still, the whole 'school girl' fetish mystifies me.

Still, the whole 'school girl' fetish mystifies me.

It's a pavlovian thing: most people get their first crush in either middle or high school, which means that schoolgirls will trigger strong emotional responses in many people, even more so if they're easily identified by their uniforms.
