As anyone who monitors the gaming world would know that over the last few years there's been a few fantasy mmo's trying to usurp WoW's position as top dog, but now that mmo's are moving onto sci-fi settings what game do you think will end up being the most popular.

I personally think that The old republic will most likely end up ridiculously popular with so many star wars and bioware fans, and the good job they did with kotor, but may face some competition from star trek online and global agenda. Though i hope when it does come around in 2012 the warhammer 40000 mmo will do alright (It's being developed by vigil games if anyones curious)

So what's your thoughts on the upcoming mmo's and any mmo set to release in the future?

Most won't be particularly good or at least they won't be interesting.

MMOs suffer because they don't seem to be able to break out of the Everquest model (see The Old Republic for example). It's annoying because when people say they want game X to become an MMO generally they want it to keep the same game-play but they always become Everquest clones.

TOR gets a glance from me here and there, but as I'm not a Star Wars fan I'm waiting for it prove to be an actual good game in it's own right.

The big one for me is Secret World. Still no real idea on how it plays, but it sounds extremely interesting with it's real world meets high tech meets paranormal backdrop. The 3 organizations with different goals and no obvious bad guys set-up worked so well in Matrix Online, so I'm eager to see it done again.

With The Old Republic made by freaking BIOWARE and being the third installment to Knights of the Old Republic... It will be massive. I don't really ever like to talk about "knocking WoW off it's pedestal" because I think it's a pointless waste of time and won't happen... but in this case, there is something... well, MASSIVE brewing there.

Also, Blade & Soul has been JAW-DROPPING at every turn. It will be another one to look out for.

I probably would not be interested in TOR if KotOR hadn't been so awesome.
But since it was... TOR!!!!!
Though I am fairly intrigued by the Cataclysm expansion as well, great idea by Blizzard to fix the extremely dull old areas up.

I love bioware, but so far there doesn't seem to be anything unique in the gameplay of TOR. Like Axolotl said, just a sea of everquest clones.

Star Trek Online got me interested with the space combat, ships, and customization, but APB just floored me with how original it is among MMOs. Plus, the customization in APB looks...just amazing. Very amazing.

Playing STO open beta. Already bought a lifetime sub. The ground combat isn't great, but it isn't bad either. I'm playing-and-staying for the space combat, and the rare promise of being Cardassian come an expansion (for the first time since BOTF).

I recommend it. It needs a lot of work, but the open beta has been very impressive. Loads of uptime, relatively little lag, excellent communication from the devs and very speedy fixes for some major issues.

If MMORPG = Everquest with changed graphics, they're taking the wrong direction to "beat" WoW.

*Insert DNF joke here*

Really, I'm not gonna be buying.
I think I'll trial FF14, though. Mostly 'cause I like the number 14.
