You need a writer. You need to find somebody to write the storyline; make it original. People who work alone create something they alone will enjoy; people who work together create something enjoyable by a large group.
There are two key elements in a game: Story and gameplay. With the exception of adventure games, the only way to excel in both areas is to work with someone. E.g. I could never design a game, but I could probably write the story for one.
Oh, and: Perma-death. NO. Not the whole game. But don't have it so they come back within one minute, either. Have it so that if a team member 'dies,' they retreat and return at the start of the next mission/battle/stage/level.
If a fantastic game designer makes a game alone, everyone would love the gameplay but would lose interest when they find that they don't give a flaming flying shit what happens at the end.
If a great writer makes a game alone, people wil love the story but would give up halfway after being bored out of their brains during the actualy 'playing' part.
