Unlike certain other nay sayers, today was a great day for Great Britain.

Not since Queen Victoria has there been such a long lived and popular monarch.

For 60 years, a length of time almost incomprehensible to many of gamers, Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II has been tirelessly serving the nation and her people.

Over those decades, the Queen has seen the United Kingdom of Great Britain change almost beyond recognition and yet has remained a mainstay of the British people for this extraordinary length of time.

Even if you don't agree with the idea of monarchy, I hope you can join me in celebrating the incredible achievement of a hard working, dedicated woman.
Having said that, join me in wishing Her Majesty the very best on this very special of days, the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

No. It's about time we kicked out the slimy, stinking monarchy and had done with them. I like the way the French dealt with their regal rodent infestation, perhaps we should do the same as they did.

I've never been a fan of the idea of a monarchy, but the Queen deserves nothing but respect. I wouldn't take her job (or that of any royal, including the fairly minor ones) if you paid me a millionbilliontrillion (hell yeah it's a number)pounds a year - press intrusion, endless ceremonies, speeches, opening public buildings, jetting around the world only to do the exact same stuff again but just with slightly different scenery, having to care and smile and be polite every time you meet someone. It's not a 9-5 job - her LIFE is a job. And absolutely every part of it is scrutinised.

That level of dedication is beyond my ability to understand. She's just fantastic.

I'm quite sure Britain is quite capable of raining all on its own. In fact, reliable sources tell me that it's rather well known for it's terrible weather.

Honestly, I thought Diamond Jubilee was some sort of comic book character at first. Emma Frost meets Jubilee sort of deal.

I think you mean Her Majesty, you've got another a instead of the e. But yeah, I know ardent republicans who regularly say they admire the Queen for the amount of work she does, and would never want her job. Kinda suggests she does a lot. Also:

Nice to see the first republican post, rather than making valid points and showing that anti-monarchists do have some good arguments, is just advocating murder.

Whoops! Well, it did rain today. ^^

Funnily enough there's been a drought going on even with a lot of rain last month.

Two other threads about the diamond jubilee have been closed today because the mods would like the topic confined to one thread.

On the contrary, I'm not even a Republican - I'm simply opposed to monarchies. Give me an autocratic dictatorship and I'd prefer that so long as said dictator put effort into becoming one rather than playing the role of a parasite who is supposedly entitled to leech due to which family they were born into.

What I find perplexing is that the OP has actually linked one of the closed threads which itself contains a link to the thread the mods are trying to keep discussion in... I'm not normally a "search bar Nazi" but guys, there's no need to make a new thread when a perfectly adequate one [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.377173-The-Escapist-Diamond-Jubilee-2012-Thread?page=1] is still on the front page.

Wouldn't there be a better solution, like say having them step down, rather than chopping their heads off?

About three days ago I promised to my self that I'd become a better, kinder person. Upon making this choice I knew that I'd have some hardships to overcome, but I never figured that such a test for my fortitude would come this early. Oh dear, is this ever going to be a tough one. As a topic, anything relevant to the queen makes me just a tad upset. There are many things to name, so where do I begin?

Firstly, it's very, very upsetting to see people get so defensive about her. It seems if anyone has something bad or questionable to say about the queen then they're automatically a 'republican'. The reason why this personally hurts me is because I love Britain and it's really sad seeing people resort to acting basically no different from those far right wing republican tea partiers in America. I'm not saying this to be rude or anything, but I can see a shocking parallel between them calling someone a 'liberal' as if it's an insult and numerous people that support the queen calling someone 'a republican' with the exact same tone and context.

I know this from experience, because I've actually been called a republican by one of them once, when I know for sure that I'm a very liberal person, evident by me being on the left on pretty much every - single - issue - imaginable.

Secondly, it's a bit frustrating to hear people throw around 'republican' when they're the ones that are defending the Queen - something which in the core of its nature is actually quite conservative. There's nothing wrong with Conservatives, but I think it's just a bit silly to call other people 'republicans' when the person doing the name calling is basically promoting a conservative ideal.

Thirdly, she's done terrible, inexcusable things that we'd usually find completely unjustifiable if it wasn't the queen in particular doing those things. Up here in Canada, she's built these estates all throughout our land which she never visits. They are costly, they've destroyed habitats, and the power is literally always on. Past justifications for these acts have been quite diverse ranging from making me out to be some kind of nationalist to saying that they'll have historical significance. Well, I simply don't agree to that. With all the people in the world we just keep pushing the animals more and more into small forests. We can't help that, but I think that one person - the queen - could if she simply stopped having so much estates built in our land that she never even visits. So, to clarify I don't get emotional over this issue because I'm some nationalist that wants to build a wall from basically anyone that's a Canadian, I just want people to have some responsibility in where they build their gigantic homes, on behalf of animal rights and conservation of our forests, land, power, electricity, and the numerous other things her estates are literally wasting.

Fourth, she is not above anyone. Technically isn't buying merchandise based after her family and giving her a gigantic mansion based around what vagina she came out of (my attempt at humor, I apologize to everyone if this came out as sexist or overly offensive.) just kind of submitting that she has greater value than you as an individual?

Surely you jest.

I meant republican as what it actually means, someone who wants a republic. This is probably what anyone who ever calls you a republican for being anti-monarchist means.

You realize that the british monarchy have pretty much no power, and are currently something akin to a tourist attraction, right?

A lot of people in Australia want to ditch her, but I don't see what the big deal is.

I am sure they do realize that, honestly I've always pegged their disliking of having a Queen on the fact that it makes them look more and more like a renaissance fair everyday. ;p

Oh don't look at me like that! Charlie Brooker said it first! >.>

The thing is, we don't have renaissance fairs over here, so I think it's more likely; 1. They actually have valid reasons, or 2. They are liberals of the hipster variety.
