I post this as a warning.

Recently I realised, while playing left 4 dead, that I needed a microphone because my new headphones lacked one. So I decided to investigate the idea of a throat mic for a PC.

Now the idea of wearing something like special forces wear appealed to me greatly. I found this site:

http://www.throat-mic.co.uk/index.html

Deciding to purchase this model:

http://www.throat-mic.co.uk/stryker_pc.htm, paying 47pounds or $105AUD.

Instead what arrived was this mic:

http://www.clearercom.com/pc_throat_mic.htm (from a completely different site), worth $50US or $75AUD.

An INFERIOR and CHEAPER model made by a DIFFERENT company.

I have lodged a paypal complaint that was denied for inexplicable reasons and received nothing positive from either company.

I am appalled that the only producers of PC oriented throat-mics would indulge such skulduggery.

As I bought through their site, rather then ebay, I am unable to report this injustice (albeit minor) to potential buyers.

I hope I have warned all of you, my gaming peers, not to trust either of these companies.

Edit. I wasn't exactly clear, I have contacted both companies and a separate email address connected to the paypal. I'm not raging unreasonably.

Seems like an odd investment to start with! The normal ones come in clear and fine.

It was kind of an impulse buy.

I thought "I wonder if they actually make these" and when they did I decided to buy one.

I have never heard of that product before. Perhaps more people would invest in such technology (aside from the army) if Stephen Hawking were endorsing it!

Isn't it more uncomfortable to have something clamped over your throat than on the side of your head?

Surely the issue isn't whether its comfortable or not, its the misdirection and outright robbery.

And I wouldn't actually know about the one I intended to buy, but I've heard good things about it. I can tell you that I never want to wear the one they did send, probably like being a fish stuck in 6pack plastic thing.

Well, it's a real shame that you were scammed out of ~$100 (I'm guessing that's how much you lost. Your OP doesn't make it crystal clear.)

I've never seen a throat mic before. Looks a little more difficult to use than a regular pair of headphones.

If you're still looking for a good pair of headphones, when I made a thread asking for suggestions [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.60449#472302], Sennheiser came highly recommended. PC151's look fairly good, have a microphone, and look to be in your price range (I saw some today at JB HiFi for $120)

Thank you for your supportive post,

I do have a nice set of headphones (minus the mic), I felt rather then buy another pair of headphones I'd put the emphasis on the microphone.

The amount of money I've lost amounts to either

$105AUD or $35AUD If you count the price of the lesser mic they sent me, which I don't because I do not intend to settle with using it.

Theres a thing called consumer rights, you have the right to return it and get a refund as long as you inform them within 30 days of purchase.

You don't have to give them any reason other than "I'm unhappy with the product" and they have to BY LAW, pick it up and give you a FULL refund.

Companies deliberately try to get round this. Make sure to look up your consumer rights to get the exact wording and extent of what you can do. Then make your move.
