[The Infamous Scamola]

I saw a documentary a couple of days ago about the Dalai Lama, and it got me thinking about the situation in Tibet.

As you may or may not know Tibet was once an independent kingdom until the chinese invasion in 1950 that forced the Dalai Lama into exile in India.

Now, what I want to know is what you guys think about the whole situation: do you think that China's control of the area is justified?
Do you think Tibet should go back to becoming an independent nation?
Do you think foreign nations should do more to support the Tibetan cause?
Why do you think no western head of state has the courage to speak out against China?

It does seem particularly unfair to the Tibetan people. Not only did they lose the right to chose their own government they lost the right to take part in the selction of any government. If say they were like Iraq and had been invaded by a democratic state at least they would have been allowed to vote on a list of potential rulers who had been vetted by the invaders. Tibetans do not even get that due to the authoritarian nature of the Chinese state.

Although, it is perhaps a bit rash to suggest that Tibet would have become a liberal democracy if China had not inveaded but still I think they would have had a greater chance.

Tibet was invaded a long time ago and there has been forced movement of many Chinese to settle the region. It will propably never be an independent country again due to sheer impact of democraphics and sinification, so I dont see what there is to talk about.

I for one think it's kinda disgraceful what china is getting away with, altough I doubt we will ever see another autonomus Tibetan state
