This is going to contain spoilers for my favorite final fantasy, so if you haven't played it don't read the rest if you intend to play it.

Most people say he is such a whiny ***** and hate him, I would like to dispel this image a little.

So lets list what we know or assume about him.

He is what, 16? He watches something destroy his city, he fights and kills big ass bugs, he gets sucked into this big monster and ends up in a new world alone, he meets people who tell him his city was destroyed 1,000 years ago and everybody he knew is long dead, he carries on killing random things, gets told the girl he loves will kill herself to bring a few years of calm, learns his dad is this monster killing millions of people, watches the girl he loves getting married to a really evil (and highly annoying) bloke, finds out he has to kill his dad, learns he never actually existed and when he kills his dad he will never see his new friends or the girl he loves again.

I think I missed a few things.

After reading that list, honestly tell me you wouldn't be traumatized? Yet tidus doesn't even cry once ... if anything this guy is emotionally crippled.

Where does this opinion come from that he is a whiny *****? I see nothing to support it, except he isn't a manly looking man.

Edit, for discussion purposes, who do you think is the whiniest ***** in the FF games?

Well dude, which Final Fantasy is it we're talking, I don't particularly mind about spoilers, but I still only skimmed it for fear of them, and I couldn't see anything specifying which?

This is FF10. It did have a great backstory and his angst is totally justified but personally I found the entire cast besides Auron and Kimhari various kinds of annoying. I guess I'd have judged Tidus a lot more kindly if I wasn't put in a bad mood by bloody Yuna.

His voice... he sounds like a amped out surfer with a powder blue crayon he jammed up his nose in preschool permanently jammed in his brain. And he dresses like a douche. And he has whiny daddy issues. And yet, somehow, Final Fantasy has made characters that are more annoying than him.

Snow, the plague of all mankind, has become the worst character ever as well as being a child molestor.

Well he never comes across as a badass, even Squall in all his lone wolf stuff was pretty sweet with the Gunblade and Cloud of course has a the buster sword and is a genetically enhanced soldier.
On the back of that Tidus, although I personally like him as a character and the game in general, is hardly gonna seem manly.

Please don't say there are spoilers use spoiler tags. Tags are [ spoiler ] [ /spoier ] without the spaces. Anyway Tidus is 17 to be exact. Also Cloud is apparently an Emo FFVI is the best game in the series no wait FFIX or FFX or FFIV but not FFVII. Just ignore people they all have different opinions but honestly no Tidus is not a whiny ***** if they believe that let them it is their loss for missing out on the on of the top FF protaganists.

Also this is a direct quote from FFwiki I think when it comes to FF these guys know what they are talking about
Tidus is a youthful teen with an upbeat and carefree attitude, as demonstrated at first in the game he is rather childish, however turns more serious when things get hectic.

His voice acting is annoying, but apart from that he's not too bad.

People say Hope too from FFXIII is emo and whiny, to which I respond 'So.. If you saw your mother fall to her death would you not be a little bit depressed too?'. They seem to have a problem with teenage male FF characters.
I'm one of those people with a problem with teenage male Final Fantasy characters haha, but it's not just because they're depressed from past events (you're right, anyone who saw their mother die like that would obviously be upset and scarred). The problem I have is HOW they're depressed, it's just written in such a ham-handed, immature way that I can't connect with the character on any level.

Look at Heather from Silent Hill 3, she finds her father dead, and constantly brings it up. But unlike most Final Fantasy characters, she's not using it as an excuse to be whiny or mouthy, instead she finds strength in it so she can find out what happened. Basically, Final Fantasy uses tragedy as an excuse for bad character behaviour, and that tends to distance the audience, rather then bring them closer.

He just looks like a fucking moron...even compared to other FF characters.

That's why I think he's hated as much as he is. Oh, and ofcourse the whole "ha, ha, ha" fiasco.

Do you remember the entire middle of the game? All he did was ***** about his daddy issues, he wouldn't stop whining the entire game!

My problem with Hope was that he was too damn inconsistent.

"I'm depressed."
"Now I'm pissed."
"Now I'm depressed again."

*Pissed for the next few chapters*

"I LOVE EVERYONE!"

That seriously annoyed me.

On Topic: I didn't have a problem with Tidus at all, he was a well-rounded character who's depression was totally justified. His home got it's shit blown sideways, his Dad was a drunken asshole who his Mum neglected him for...I could go on for a while.

I didn't even mind the laughing scene all that much.

I liked him more then other characters. *looks at FFXIII*.
To be honest he has a perfectly good reason to whine and moan because let's face it
His whole life was turned upside-down.
As mentioned before he saw the place where he lived for most of his life get destroyed by sin and later he finds out that his mother had excepted death after Jecht went missing.
Personly I view FFX as the best in the series.
They had one of the most emotion driving stories ever and the most well rounded characters for the FFs yet and the combat was amazing!

So... wait... you hated Hope because he... acted like an actual teenager? Dood...
Personaly, Tidus is one of the characters I found ANNOYINGLY Relateable, probably for all the wrong reasons (I have massive daddy issues myself <<') but he was still trying to make the best of it.

And I really think people just DON"T GET the Laughing scene. They're FORCING LAUGHTER people.

I never spoiler tagged it 'cos I said I was going to spoiler it, and if people didn't want it to be spoiled they couldn't read this thread, or even think he was whiny to start with.

Read your "fix" without opening the spoiler and it makes no sense, there is no evidence to support my claim that he is emotionally dead other than that I said so.

It doesn't matter if you say spoilers you still use spoiler tags. It is like saying that you are going to talk about the plot to anew movie and then shout it out. Yes when people stick their fingers in their ears they will miss most of it but you never said where spoiler ends or beings so people know when to read again. Thus for simplicity just use the tags.

I gave no edit to your post other than the spoiler tags. Also yes there is no evidence to support your claim he is emotionally dead. He is a very upbeat character despite all that has happened. He is still able to laugh and smile and be the clown despite what has happened. Maybe this is how he deals with grief but he takes it surprisingly well and never gives off the impression of being dead inside. He does have the occasional bout of depression or anger at his Dad to show he is actually grieving but beside that he gets on with life. You want a FF protagonist that is dead inside Squall is the closest.

I guess I'm inconsistent too because I didn't mind Tidus but hated really every character in XIII but especially Hope. Part of it is that X was my first Final Fantasy but I flatter myself into thinking its because Tidus is the main character and everything is coming through his perspective which personally made his whining palatable. The player was only informed of what Tidus knew and he didn't get what the hell they were doing so he was wrapped up in comparatively nominal side drama, which all wrapped up well.

Hope on the other hand isn't really the main character, really no one in 13 was, it was like they thought that wasn't a crappy part of 12, so all his blathering on about his mom was both melodramatic and grating to me. I also couldn't stand the corny naming in that game.

Whos the whineist FF char? wow, thats... thats a hard call to make.. theres just so many many many good choices to pick from. I would say basically every lead protagonist from 7-12 then some (yeah, plently of whiney "protagonists" in XI)

If you want to really whittle it down to their most absolutely negative connotations, just looking at the 3d era.

Cloud is a whiney poser with self esteem issues where he just doesnt think hes good enough.

Squall is a whiney hybrid, half of him is resentful that he doesnt suck, (as in being considered the most talented SeeD) and the other half is resentful at the fact he cant come off all dark, gloomy, isolated and brooding, with all these people wanting to be his friend or challenge him

Zidane... is resentful at being poor and worthless, and the theiving monkey rat has to capture a princess, and shatter societal structure all thanks to his Napoleon complex, all just so everyone else around him can feel as small, poor and insignificant as he wants to.

Tidus...Sure he doesnt break down because his world has ended.. but as others have commented the whole game is centered around one mans daddy issues, and one girls hope that that guy will get over his daddy issues long enough so she can throw herself into the fires of mordor.

Vaan.... /facepalm... Vaan drones on constantly about being a "sky pirate" dreaming of being captain of a ship.. but realizes hes never going to be more than a captains "special" bunk mate. Hes basically a robin without a batman because batman is too busy trying to get some bunny tail to pay any attention to him.

The sad thing is... Lightning is perhaps the most masculine and mature lead protagonist put forth in the series since... Terra Branford / celes.

So in short.. Square cannot seemingly grasp the concept of crafting male chars, without resorting to anthromorphization (Red XIII, Kimari, ect) or blatant sterotypes and cliches (The big bad black man Barret, the stoic samurai Auron, The mentally abusive drunken dad Jecht, the romance novel dashing pirate rouge Balthier, The love lorn vampire Vincent. The too stupid to see beyond duty and honor Steiner, The dark knight yearning to be redeemed Cecil (and Basch for that matter), The self imposed dishonor from failure Cyan, The one who would be king, but rejected it for freedom Sabin, ect ect ect ad nauseum.

I admit this is a very glib interpretation... as basically all ficton falls back on preformulated templates, But honestly, Square has practically perfected the whiny emo teen trope

WOOOSH! If somebody read your edit, without reading the bit you spoiler tagged then they would have no idea why I am claiming he isn't whiny.

They would have read:

The person reading it who didn't want it spoiled would be like "... um, what?" it makes no sense.

Arguing about spoiler tags though is plain sad and I think lower than both of us, I never used them and you think I should have. I am not going to change it so to continue to argue about it is a moot point.(I think I got the usage right)

when I say emotionally dead, I mean like when people say "shes all emotional" you know that shes sad or upset, generally bad feelings. You have never heard anybody say "shes emotional" only to find her laughing her head off. (sorry, for the stereotype)
