TIE Fighter Developer Would "Love" a Remake

Fans aren't the only ones excited by the prospect of a TIE Fighter remake: David Wessman, one of the mission builders on the original game, says he'd love to take another shot at it and thinks most of the other development team members would too.

Rumors of a TIE Fighter do-over first kicked up in Monkey Island treatment [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/93670-Is-LucasArts-Planning-the-Return-of-TIE-Fighter], bringing it up to date for a new generation of gamers. Rather than blowing off the idea, Rodriguez issued the cryptic response, "We don't have any announcements now, but stay tuned. We will soon..."

Fans were naturally thrilled with the idea of hopping back into the Empire's most famous twin ion engined starfighter and it turns out they weren't alone: David Wessman [http://www.mobygames.com/developer/sheet/view/developerId,1674/], one of the mission designers on the original game, dropped us a line to say that he'd love to be involved in a TIE Fighter remake.

"I think the 'apprentices' you're looking for would be mission designers David Wessman (me) and David Maxwell. We're both ready, willing and able, but no one from LEC [LucasArts Entertainment Company] has contacted us," he said in an email. "For the record, I know that original artists Martin Cameron and Jim McLeod are interested, and I'd bet Jon Knowles is, too. I'm pretty sure that programmers Peter Lincroft and Albert Mack would be, as well as Edward Kilham. These are the guys who, with Larry, were the core of the X-Wing and TIE Fighter teams."

"The series remains a high point of my career," he added. "It's where I got my break to move from test into development, and I left Totally Games [http://www.totallygames.com/index.shtml] with the odd title of 'Gameplay & Story Lead' (because Larry [Holland] refused to give anyone lead designer credit in those days, regardless of what their actual role on the project was.)"

Wessman also put an interesting question in front of the community: "If a great game dev team is somewhat analogous to a band, then doesn't it make sense that you would try to get as much of the original band back together as possible? Ie., is it really Pink Floyd if they tour without Roger Waters? Is it really Black Sabbath if they tour without Ozzy? If Paul and Ringo tour together, would anyone accept them as The Beatles without John and George?" (Quick answers: No, yes and I don't care.)

I think it'd be fantastic if LucasArts went to the trouble of reassembling the original development team for a TIE Fighter remake but I'm not going to hold my breath. I don't think dev teams are analogous to bands in the eyes of most gamers, who are generally more interested in the final product than the people who are actually responsible for creating it. This is even truer in the case of remakes, when the elements that made a game great are already established and all that's needed is a technical upgrade. On the other hand, I could be completely wrong; after all, it was a comment [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.129188?page=2#2795385] about former LucasArts luminary Lawrence Holland that prompted Wessman's email. What do you think?

As long as there's a level where I can laser the ever loving crap out of Jar Jar Binks and his miserable home planet, I'm totally down for a remake (seriously, burn Jar Jar!)

I think original dev teams could contribute greatly to a remake as advisers but the remake some anonymity to look critically at the originals flaws and make fresh new ones. I doubt people who played Prince of Persia:Sands of Time could go back and play the very first one, assuming they could find a copy and get it to run.

TIE fighter was one of the great games of its time. However I fear it is no longer its time. Gamers don't have the attention spans to memorize where all the buttons are to distribute power and direct their shields. I am afraid a TIE Fighter remake will be either a console cash in with the depth of Rogue Squadron, or a faithful remake that will sell poorly due changes in gamer tastes. I would love to be wrong on this and revel once more in the wicked glory of watching rebel fighters burn.

This was my first game and I have fond memories of it. If they can spruce it up and keep the original feel of the game I say go for it. However if they mess it up and the released version isn't up to quality I will be hunting them down and slaughtering them all.

I have to agree with Hamster Mk4. TIE Fighter whilst being a game held in that special place in my heart along with Deus Ex, Max Payne 2, Chrono Trigger, Thunder Force 4 and Nanaca Crash (bizarrely addictive flash game) is a game that doesn't really fit in today's market. If it is remade it will almost certainly not be a PC exclusive title so a lot of that old functionality will be dropped to ensure that the controls will all fit on a six-axis controller, plus they'll have to make room for the Force powers the pilot will inevitably develop.

I think realistically the best we can hope for is Jedi Starfighter in TIE Fighters. Though if they pull it off then maybe there's hope for a remake of the gem that was Dark Forces, or even a sequel that takes place before Kyle Katarn becomes a wizard.

S - toggle shields
X - toggle fire mode
W - switch weapons
R - target nearest enemy
E - target nearest enemy targeting you
A - target attacker of current target
F9 - toggle laser recharge rate
F10 - toggle shield recharge rate
Ctrl+F9 - divert power to lasers
Ctrl+F10 - divert power to shields
backspace - full throttle
enter - match speed with target
H - start hyperdrive

I also still know the wingman commands by memory, but let's leave it at that.

If this get's done, I'm going to screech and jump up and down like a little girl.

i think they would do really good to remake this. it was a fun game at the time and be even more fun now. they could do both X-Wing and Tie Fighter or maybe just remake X-Wing vs Tie Fighter

Game developers are like football teams, you trade up, getting fresh faces in to keep up with the new technology. But if Wessman is in on this, and it happens, I will be so 'appppeeeeeeee!!!!!!!

Considering the ratio of crap Star Wars games to good ones, perhaps getting some of the original team members is a pretty good idea.

I think TIE fighter along with X-wing Alliance were fine games, and shouldnt be updaed, but rather rereleased.
It would be nice with a remake, but I would settle for a rerelease. There is a spiffy SVGA cd version they could pop on Steam.

I'll raise you the mission structure which, though cool at the time would be far, far too punishing in this day and age. Not to mention that "tabbing" through all the targets would be much harder on a TV screen.

But it could be done - and I believe it's worthwhile. It's a good series of games for an rerelease, rather than just a touch up. A properly fixed up multiplayer would be superb too!

That almost looks complicated enough to get me interested. Seems like you get a very deep level of control over your ship.

I have never played tie fighter but ummm.........they don't have shields.

Tie fighters don't have shields or hyperdrive, the tradeoff is more speed. Sorry about being a star wars fan but that is the cannon.

no shield until you get the Tie Advance X1 or the Tie defender. then youll be laughing to the bank with kills. Starfighters are serious business
