...They're making a live action version of a movie about a baby elephant with ridiculously large ears which he uses to fly? I know I shouldn't judge before seeing it, but I don't see that going well. As Roger Ebert said, "it's in the very nature of animation to make absurd visual sights more plausible", and Dumbo certainly seems to qualify as an absurd visual sight which would be crippled by veering closer to reality via live action.

Oh boy. Is another dark and edgy re-imagining incoming? I wonder if this "it's dark and edgy and mature for mature people like me" phase will ever end.

I would like to see a source on this before I start running around yelling that the sky is falling. Although it is really hard to resist the urge to run around yelling the sky is falling.

Why dumbo? I think Pinocchio could make for a much better live action thing; they could even make it so he wasn't fully finished and had scissors for hands -oh wait.

The biggest issue I have is that elephants are not inherently cute. They are big and terrifying. The only thing I see a live-action version of the movie bringing is a wickedly nightmarish pink elephant song that works for all the wrong reasons.

I can already imagine those pretty racist crows turned into some kind of super-racist (I mean REALLY racist. Michael Bay racist) N.W.A-ripoff. With gangsta slang and all.

Hmmm... Alice in Wonderland really wasn't good, but live-action Cinderella was surprisingly enjoyable. I'll refrain from making any judgements untill I at the very least see the trailer.

I read the thread title twice, then clicked, because I was absolutely certain this could not be a thing. I don't know why I was certain of that -- I'm aware of grotesque remakes like Willy Wonka, Alice, and so forth. It's just....I don't know....I guess the answer to every question in life really is "shitloads of money."

No Depp will be playing the mouse and Helena Bonham-Carter will be cast as Dumbo's mother.

Hurray for Disney live-actioning the shit out of their own classics!
(Reads the headline) /Facedesk (Sigh) It's getting to the point where I'm not as angry about it, I'm kind of sad instead. And Depp really IS going to be in this...then it sadly wouldn't surprise me that much. Remember when Johnny Depp being in a movie and thinking it would be good because HE was in it? Dude seriously needs help.

Eh, I dunno. On the one hand, some parts of Dumbo did get dark (Dumbo's Mom going berserk, the fire related acts and Pink Elephants on Parade) and I can see Tim Burton doing very well there. On the other hand, Tim Burton hasn't been up to snuff recently (Directing and Producing some sub-par films), and Tim Burton is an odd choice for Directing a Dumbo remake.

Still, considering the fact that he was supposed to direct Maleficent, it could be Disney has him under contract to direct at least one Live-Action Disney Film this century.

I'll still go see it though. I bet Burton can direct this decently. I just hope the Script is decent...

Hey, hey, hey...

Let's not overreact here.

There is a chance it may not just be a stupid stunt using a familiar name in order to grab box office seats. I mean, Tim Burton could have a new, original take on the story and may want to do something completely different from his recent movies. Johnny Depp could always add his flair and hey, the screenwriter might have something clever hidden for the disney superfan that casuals wouldn't understand. This could be the best remake ever, don't judge a book by its cover!

Should be Michael Bay or George Lucas, how else to get that authentic racial stereotype of the crow boys?

So... Is this where all those unemployed circus elephants are going to?

Other than that, given how both sad, tripping, and heartfelt the original Dumbo movie was, I feel like Mr. Burton will either make a good movie in his own right or a great movie that just so happens to be called "Dumbo"...

No, I don't have a biased opinion about Mr. Burton... Why are you looking at me like that?

Ehh I'm sure it will be alright...but I've been a little tired of Burton. I think it'd be much more interesting if they had Terry Gilliam direct it...

Same here. This is just... What the fuck is Disney thinking? And Tim Burton of all directors?
