I agree with most of the games on the list, but Angry Birds? I understand that it's an enjoyable game, but it's not Top 10 material.

It is also nice not to see Black Ops on that list. I thought 2010 was a good year for video gaming in general.

I personally thought that Alan Wake's atmosphere suffered horribly by having the main character speak hackney narration throughout the whole thing, but to each his own.

I personally thought Alan Wake failed in it's main atmosphere and purpose with questionable gameplay on the side, but.. It's Time. I don't really care what they do with their cute little list, really.

Alan Wake was ruined for me for one reason and one reason only:

The manuscript pages sucked. Having to collect them didn't bug me that much (though some being locked unless on the hardest difficulty did), but the way they were written was just terrible. I felt like I was reading my attempts at creative writing back when I was 13. It completely sucked me out of the story when I was reading this so-called "world famous" novelist, well, sucked.

If you're gonna have your writer be a main character and have his works scattered around, at least make them decent at their job.

But eh, it was okay other than that I guess. Got a bit cheap at times (got stunlocked to death more than once from an enemy which appeared behind me) but besides that I barely had any challenge on whatever they called their 'Normal' difficulty and it didn't suck me back in for a second playthrough.

And there was a major goddamn plothole in the middle of it relating to the manuscript to the point where I went on a five minute rant about it to my flatmate.

So yeah, wouldn't have been my choice, but not a bad game on the whole.

Edit: Also Mr. Wake wears like four layers at once? That's just silly. Although when he wasn't narrating I could pretend he was the bastard child of The Doctor and Ash from Evil Dead which made it a lot more entertaining.

Even though Alan Wake isn't so good as GoTY material, it certainly is a good contender to the overhyped Starcraft 2 or the too-adored Mass Effect 2.
Mass Effect 2? Too adored? How dare you?
Well I haven't got around to playing the games yet, but everyone I know that's tried playing them says they're boring as fuck. Big interesting story and drama notwithstanding. I found the same problem with Dragon Age, which I dropped after a short while.(Read: 5-10 minutes)

OH HELL YES! I love this game and agree completely with TIME's statement. Hopefully this will make Remedy make a sequel to it. AWESOME!

Kudos to Time for not just picking a sequel from Franchise X, and their reasoning does make sense. Never played Alan Wake, myself, but that's really because I forgot about it, and surprisingly enough my local Gamestop doesn't appear to have ANY copies, used or new, in stock. That being said, my GOTY is a sequel, so hurray me for being a bit of a hypocrite.

Alan Wake was good until the ending. Made no sense and it resolved nothing. Sorry, but you have to do better than that to make me play the second game. If you want me to like your series, give me enough closure that I'm satisfied but leave enough dangling threads that I want to come back.

Yea, off-topic, but I have to interject. If you only played "5-10 minutes" of Dragon Age, and it bored you, you are either just super impatient, or RPGs just aren't for you. Oh, and in regards to ME2, there is a demo for it on XBL and Steam, so you can try it for yourself to see if you like it. Pretty long demo, too, from what I hear.

I like to play all sorts of things, and while I'll admit that RPG's didn't used to be my thing, I'm getting more and more into them lately. TES series especially. It's just that in DA I got the impression that the story takes ages to get the ball rolling. It probably gets better later, or I just didn't have the patience to keep going.

I'll give the demo a shot whenever my internet connection isn't needed for other people in the house.

Five minutes??? You really shouldn't be playing BioWare games if you can't put up with them for five minutes.

Not #1, but I think that there was simply No. #1 material this year.

Sorry, still have to go with Red Dead Redemption for it's epic story.

And YES I find the story of Red Dead to be more epic then God of War 3.
Red Dead Redemption's story was amazing but not epic. God of War 3, almost by definition, is epic. I'd still say that Red Dead Redemption's story is better, but that's because epic =/= good.

http://thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=epic

There, just read that.

OT: I don't give a fuck what Time say. They're writing for a different audience, and they probably know their audience better than we do. If Alan Wake makes Time's audience think a little differently about the current state of gaming, good. I'm sure a lot of other games on the list are things that an average non-gamer wouldn't find terribly interesting. I could probably go visit my family and make my mother care about the story of Alan Wake or Red Dead Redemption, but there is no way in hell I'd be able to convince her to read every entry in the Mass Effect encyclopedia just to get a scope of the world.

Isn't there a game that has fantastic gameplay alongside fantastic storytelling?

I would say Red Dead, but Time isn't famous for game reviews.
haven't you played bioshock?

Yo Remedy, I'm really happy for you, I'll let you finish, but Bioware has one of the best video games of all time. One of the best video games of all time!

Bioshock's storytelling died about an 1+1/2 to 2 hours before the end, and it wasn't perfect to begin with.

It's also not a 2010 game.

I enjoyed Alan Wake incredibly and it was a brilliant game with a fantastic story, gameplay, atmosphere and characters. It's not my GOTY however, but it's definatly on my top 5 this year.
