Time to stop buying DLC

Simple statement but damn it will be hard to follow through.

Honestly I'm ok with the concept of DLC and think it is probably a good thing but the prices are proving too much.
$10-15 seems to becoming standard for the big publishers. Even when the price isn't really warranted
Look at CoDs $15 map packs, only getting 3 maps and not a hell of a lot else, cripes modding communities used to release maps as good as anything the Devs did for free many of which would end up as main stays in competitions.
THQ isn't much better with their $10 map packs for Space Marine, the Dreadnought DLC I would almost consider worth it with 3 maps and an entire new game mode for $10.
Don't even get me started on EA.

Too many of us just lap it up and we are starting to pay more and more for less and less. Hell we are paying for things that used to be free from modders but big publishers are becoming so afraid someone might make something for free that they can charge for as DLC they are even cracking down on modding (one poor guy modded ME3 singleplayer and had his whole origin account banned).

So for me at least no more DLC until I start seeing it at (what I consider) reasonable prices.

I agree with this. I always feel like I'm getting ripped off whenever I buy DLC so I try to avoid it now. Some devs still put out good DLC though, I usually like Bethesda DLC for example.
I just avoid buying DLC, it's so overpriced now but nobody really cares so publishers keep raising the price.

I've very rarely bought DLC unless it came in the form of a complete pack. I've got more than enough games to play now to wait until it's all out. Got Borderlands and New Vegas this way and I'm really happy I didn't have to wait for more content to come out once starting and had the whole game in front of me from the first time.

I only really buy tiny DLCs like Frozen Synapse or Binding of Isaac, and I will never in my entire life buy a map pack.

I completely agree. These companies are getting into that whole thought process again, gamers will buy anything that's put in front of them. They are also loving DLC, or just digital game anything, because you can't take that stuff back to the store or game stop if you're unsatisfied with it.

Not that you can really return games to begin with, but if enough people do it, or if a person is a good, big old two-year old, screamer a store pretty much has to cave to the customer demand.

I have my fingers crossed that Leviathan will be so poorly sold, EA will just axe Mass Effect once and for all.

Now, who was modding the ME3 singleplayer and what were they doing to get banned for it. Cause I have a bunch of friends who mod single player all the time and they still have their accounts.

Ok looks like the info on ME3 modding got clarified in the same thread later on.

Most of the threads have been edited so the original posts aren't their anymore caused a big stir at the time.

Have some patience. Exercise some restraint. And wait until the inevitable "GOTY" or "ULTRAMEGACOMPLETE" version of any AAA game.

Literally the only DLC I've ever bought was the Realms of the Diggle Gods expansion for Dungeons of Dredmor, and you know what? It was worth it. For less than $2 (steam sale) I got an expansion that made the game half again as long, and also added new content in the form of new skills, enemies, and items. The standard $15 for a map pack that would have been free five years ago model, on the other hand? Yeah, screw that. I don't have to stop buying that kind of DLC because I never started.

I rarely ever buy DLC these days. It's almost never worth the price they ask for it.

I've barely purchased any DLC this entire generation. I think only the Bulletstorm ones of which the first wasn't worth the price but the second one was, mainly because they added a whole new game mode which applied to all the previous maps as well as a few really fun Echoes.

I've got a better idea.

Since I still need to buy some DLC from games like Fallout New Vegas, Boarderlands, etc. How about we stop buying MAP PACK DLCs that are either priced as much as those DLC/expansions or more!

That way, we send a message at what DLC is good DLC and what DLC is bad, while we don't just kill off the idea of DLC altogether. Everybody wins.
To me single player DLC is just a slap in the face that says "Hey we could have put this in the finished product, it's story relevant we we'll even build upon it in sequels. But you need to pay us 1/3 what you paid for the game to get another 45 minutes of gameplay. Map packs were good when they cost 800 Microsoft points (or were even free), now it's just bullshit. ALL DLC should be free after a certain period of time, it's complete crap that Activision will charge the same amount for a Map pack for COD4 as they do for MW3. Mass Effect 3 is out now, EA shouldn't be charging for Mass Effect 1 DLC.

I've never bought DLC as I refused to give these companies the satisfaction of purchasing their overpriced map packs. Only exception being once buying gears 2 game of the year edition which came with all the released DLC for only $10 then the normal copy, same with Borderlands on Steam.

1. Ignore DLC as they come out.
2. Wait for Ultimate/Game of the Year Editions.
3. ???
4. PROFIT!!!

Unfortunately, not all games do come out in GOTY editions though...

In theory, DLC is awesome. "Hey, you loved this game, right? Well, we went ahead and made more stuff for that wouldn't fit on the disc, or that we just couldn't finish in time for the game to come out. for only $5-$10, we'll make a great game even better!"

I mean, it's literally just an all-digital version of the expansion packs of old, and miniaturized. Instead of one large Expansion Pack for $30+ that may only have one section you'll probably like, now you can just buy that one section for $10 or so, and decide if you want the others, later!

I do agree that a lot of companies are exploiting this stuff, though.

Time to stop buying Overpriced DLC
Fixed.

There's a lot of good well-worth-the-money DLC, you can support those while still choosing not to buy bad DLC.
This.
I do love how people ***** and moan about DLC, rather than just not buy it if they don't think it's worth it.

Or how about we stop buying DLC altogether and bury the concept? I mean how strongly do you feel about his? Strong enough to make a few sacrifices? If no, well, this is why we can't have nice things.

If people are still buying them in significant numbers, then are they really overpriced?

It's more that we shouldn't be buying any DLC that we, personally, feel is overpriced. But we shouldn't have been doing that anyway. Was anybody? Were people here throwing away their money on map packs whilst simultaneously cursing the developer for ripping them off? Don't buy what you don't feel is worth your money. Simples.

Captcha: "ROAST BEEF". Worth it. Every time.

How about I buy what I think is worth the price? After all that is how capitalism works. If I think DLC is worth the price, I'll buy it.

The last DLC I've bought was for Theatrhythm (I think 8 songs so far with plans to download two or three more). Haven't download a map pack since the days of Halo 3 to be honest and, don't even have Xbox Live Gold. It's nice being cheap and, good luck in your attempt at spending less!
