TimeGate Announces Section 8 Sequel

TimeGate Studios has shocked the world with the announcement of Section 8: Prejudice, a follow-up to the 2009 multiplayer FPS Section 8 [http://www.amazon.com/Section-8-Pc/dp/B001TM3NXE/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1284136485&sr=1-1].

The big announcement that was TimeGate [http://forums.timegate.com/showthread.php?t=18168] hasn't said much about the game at this point but the debut trailer makes it look very much like its predecessor: A high-speed, team-based FPS with an emphasis on multiplayer.

Section 8 added an interesting twist to the online shooter formula by eliminating fixed spawn points. Instead, as part of the elite 8th Armored Infantry, players would drop onto the battlefield from hovering dropships, allowing them to enter the fray from anywhere. It added an element of tactical unpredictability that worked both ways: Players could spawn behind enemy strongpoints but could also be shot down during their descent.

So what's the shock? As cool as it sounds, Section 8 wasn't terribly well-received. Review scores were middling [http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/section-8] and the single-player campaign was essentially just a tutorial for online play, but it never really caught on and populated games are reportedly hard to come by. In other words, it's not the sort of game that really screams out for a sequel.

On the other hand, a sequel is a chance to get right what you screwed up the first time around, so maybe this one will be closer to TimeGate's mark. Platforms have not yet been announced but the original Section 8 was released for the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Section 8: Prejudice is currently expected to hit in early 2011.

I played the first. It was insanely "meh".

From the trailer the sequel seems like more of the same.

My predictions for this game: It'll either suck, or be suprisingly awesome.

Ehh We'll see. I thought the original had potential, it just never fully realized it. Maybe this game will be a lot of fun. I liked the trailer at least.

Oh joy?

Maybe they'll build on the potential of the first and make a solid game.

I'll keep my eye on it. But likely will end up disappointed.

The trailer's narration makes the game sound like it's going to be quite philosophical. Except I don't think it will...

I mean, at least when the Fallout games say, "War never changes", I imagine they might in some way explore the themes of violence, war, weapons of mass destruction etc.

The first game reminded me of Medal of Honor: Airborne, in that yeah, the spawning was cool, but get past those five seconds of fun at every spawn and you have the same old shooter that you've been playing for ages.

Let's see where they go from here.

The problem Section 8 faces is that it is trying to enter an oversaturated market. That market is Multiplayer-focused FPS games. That particular genre has become the playground of established franchises (CoD, Battlefield, Halo, etc.) and brand names (Valve), meaning that newcomers need to present something that'll make players take a chance on their games. Also, when it comes to multiplayer, people tend to focus on one game or a few games (usually from the above list of established franchises/developers).

So basically, they don't stand a chance. There were a few other multiplayer-oriented FPS games that came out in the past two years, some of them better recieved than S8 and they are also pretty much forgotten by this point. There is simply no room on the market for such titles, they don't have a target audience. Or to be more specific, the audience that they hope to attract has no reason to buy their product.

It doesn't matter how good the game might be, if all it's offering is multiplayer then it'll be overshadowed by larger franchises. There's more than enough FPS out there, try making something different...

The dynamic missions were fun too, sadly I just wished there were a greater variety of Mechs, Weapons and Vehicles in the first game. Other than that, didn't it come out at the same time as other AAA fps, so it went largely unnoticed, oh and I think the DLC help split the community for this game, not to mention there were already a lack of maps, and the DLC added two/three new maps at a time where there were already very few people playing it online.

I own the game and I have played the single player from start to finish and have enjoyed the multilayer when ive played. I have to admit it surprises me that they would think there was enough profit to turn in a squeal, however if they improve the single player and multilayer then it could turn into a very good game indeed.

I'd pick up Section 8 if I saw it cheap, say, 20 bucks. But the handful of times I have actually seen it on sale, it's run for at least 50, which is way more than I'm willing to pay for such an obviously generic shooter. TF2 aside, I'm not much of a fan of multiplayer-centric games, either.

And, for the record, Conrad [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conrad_Black].

Dreadful game. Even after release it still had empty servers on the 360. Only decent thing to come from it was the dedicated servers, and nothing else. That doesn't fill me with hope for this new one...

hopfully this one won't be hyper generic liuke the last one, and have at least a half decent single player campaign.

I don't know why the first wasn't amazingly awsome. I mean, fun spawns, bases, dropping turrets and other vehicles out of the sky, and cool class customization, it was just so, I don't know. It felt akward and for some reason not that good. I think they can fix that though. Plus the only other shooter coming out at spring is Brink, so I think a few people will pick it up.
