I too am disgusted but you forgot to explicitly name and shame the hacks responsible for this shoddy excuse for journalism:

Charles Bremner and Marie Tourres

From pictures of him via google images, he looks like a sour old git and almost all the comments on his article are criticising him for focusing on the WoW angle and ignoring the more obvious factors such as home life and academic performance.

Boy who lives in houseboat plans world domination - do houseboats create supervillains?

I really get sick of this logical fallacy, because when the media starts using flawed reasoning to prove cause and effect it's detrimental to society because it diminishes our collective understanding of what critical thinking is and isn't. We're degenerating into a society that considers it more important to merely repeat opinions rather than evaluate them.

Hey, get used to it. It keeps happening again and again, and other than whining about it on our own forums, we the game nerds don't actually try and do anything about it, nor do the game companies. It gets attention (and more and more of it as it goes on) so there is no real reason for the media to stop, especially with friendly politicians in Washington and even Australia.

Really, what reason do they have to stop? There is no benefit to doing anything else but continueing.

This is one of the reasons why I've felt that those with the resources (video game companies) should start organizing some protests and such to this kind of treatment at the very least.

I am also disgusted. People wonder why journalism is dead, and why newspapers are going out of print. Well, take a long, hard look at modern media, and you will understand why. From the competition for ratings and readership came sensationalism, and from there all hell broke loose. Nowadays with our media barons, there is no journalism, there is only criticism form either the left or the right towards each other, and biased reports. Couple that with reports on subjects the "journalist" clearly did not read up on and you have one stiff, stiff corpse.
The sad thing is, it's always been like this. Integrity has been dead for a long while; hell, the most popular Progressive era newspapers were mostly sensationalist bullshit. Spanish-American war anyone? Competing sensationalist headlines about the fate of the Maine and the mistreatment of Cuban natives was the main reason for U.S. citizens backing of the war.

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

WHAT THE FUCK.

YEAH MAN I BETTER GO EQUIP MY FUCKING +3 LIGHTBRINGING SHOTGUN OF THE WOLF.

How does this even remotely...Ugh.

People actually think this way? Like, it actually occurs to a human, a rational, fellow human being, that, through his ignorance, that another human's decision to do..this, is, because, of, kasjfk;ljasldjkljk;lsfjdlkdjasj I can't even think anymore.

Oh for fuck sake, I can see how playing WoW for a while would drive you insane but I think the fact that his Dad's got a shotgun lying around might be more of a direct influence.

*sigh*
This.

Also, could people please do more research on WHY the kid decided to try and kill someone with his dad's shotgun? BEFORE they immediately make light of the fact that he played WoW? I'm getting thoroughly tired of the media hype about "GAMES R EVUL HUR DUR HUR".

Oh, yeah, and the small fact that the kid had EASY ACCESS to a motherfucking shotgun and 25 cartridges for the thing!

That's poor parenting and improper firearms handling on the parents right there.

Then, if the cause is what I think it was, it's also neglect on his parents AND teachers part.

Beat me to it, with extra research to boot. I salute you, sir.

This proves the devs need to nerf the horde before they MAKE kids turn into murderers!

though seriously, with a lot of western Europe being a nanny state that filters and censors the net, bans movies and games, and throws people in jail for cartoons, I worry that idiots there will really believe that games turn you into a killer

Gee, blame video games for school shootings, in spite of the fact video games are about the only form of media not to feature a school shooting. For example

If.... , directed by Lindsay Anderson , 1968
Massacre at Central High , directed by Rene Daalder , 1976
The Basketball Diaries , directed by Scott Kalvert , starring Leonardo di Caprio , 1995
Family Matters
Degrassi: The Next Generation
" Kinslayer " by Nightwish
"The Ballad of Charles Whitman " by Kinky Friedman
" Sniper " by Harry Chapin
" The Homecoming Queen's Got a Gun " by Julie Brown
" Jeremy " by Pearl Jam
"Rival" by Pearl Jam
" I Don't Like Mondays " by The Boomtown Rats (also covered by Tori Amos )
" Youth of the Nation " by P.O.D.
" Educated Hate " by Rorshack
" Ohio " by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
" Stole " by Kelly Rowland
" The Anatomy Of a School Shooting " by Ill Bill
" Ticking " by Elton John
The Scarf ( 1947 ) by Robert Bloch (not a school shooting novel per se ; contains elements of mass murder fantasies, especially one passage which is one of the earliest known sniper stories)
Rage ( 1997 ) by Stephen King
Hey Nostradamus! ( 2003 ) by Douglas Coupland
Project X ( 2004 ) by Jim Shepard
We Need to Talk about Kevin ( 2003 ) by Lionel Shriver

Why is it that some people still think that all games involve guns and massive levels of violence?

You can tell from the fucking box art that WOW is most definately a fantasy game, and not an uber realistic FPS.
Well the box art of the original wow was a dwarf with a gun so...humm

But it is stupide that wow is the next Target of this mis fired argument, maybe there was no other possible explanation for this and the cops are so stumped that when asked to comment they said

"I don't no why he did it, you come up with something" Detective XXXXX XXXXXXX French police

In other news: Water is wet. The sun is on fire. Etc.

I really hate the state of the media nowadays....
When the hell did the sun catch on fire?!? Isn't anyone going to do something about it? I mean we can bomb the moon so surely we can help the sun out.

OT: Besides we all know the real culprit is books not games. More people have killed over what they have read in a book then played on a game, and I bet we all can name those books. I'll go first with 'The Little Engine that Could'

I'm a bit confused here, why the hell did the dad just leave his shotgun AND ammo lying around if he knew his son would be going on a rampage?

The Middle Ages didn't have orcs??
I'm pretty sure a fair number of people from the middle ages would have diagreed.

I think the media is just making video games a scapegoat. Clearly there are several other factors that contribute to school violence. Including as this article stated, a competitive school enviroment; although natural disposition probably has a huge impact as well. However since gamers are a percieved as relatively small community it's easy to target that and latch on to it without taking into consideration the number of people who actually play video games. I'd say that they'd have a hard time finding teenagers/young adults in a western country who didn't play video games.

This is the reason I don't play WoW, I don't want to be exposed to all those levels where you go into French Catholic schools to massacre scholorcs (scholar orcs no less) with your shotgun.

Getting tired of these stories. It's a bandwagon which I'd like to burn to the ground, regardless of if the supporters are still onboard or not.
