I tip based on job performance some people deserve more than what they are getting for how good they are at it and some deserve nothing extra. that results in a 0-50% margin for tips for waiters/waitresses, other service jobs that make a full wage have to go above and beyond their normal job to get any tip from me.

Honestly I really don't mind the tipping culture, its a good way to reward people that are good at their jobs without having to reward those who are not. Tips are a performance bonus from a satisfied customer not part of the wage.

I think above all it's about rewarding the personal input rather than compensating for their crap salaries.
I wonder, as an Australian, how many coffees would be thrown in my face for refusing to tip mediocre service in America.

Its why I like living hear (occasionally past my crying of shit internet). People are nice to you because their nice to you. And not tipping is very much not the custom.
I'm speaking as an Argentine. Here at least I get the feeling waiters and waitresses are pleasantly surprised when you tip them.
Same in Brazil, when i tip someone is not because it done it's job, but because he's done his job well. The thing about waiters here is that they have the 10% already included in the bill. Yeah, in here if you use the waiter after everything there is a 10% just for the waiter already included on the bill, you don't need to tip. But, if he's done a great job, there's no problem in giving the guy an extra.

And there is the thing that here in Brazil is illegal to receive you salary only in tips, the Worker Protection Laws deny this. The Workers cannnot receive less than the minimun Wage estabilished by the government, if he is paid less he can go to court after being fired and receive every single penny his old boss owe him, and then more in damages. So, yes, we brazilians rarely tip because of this, it's just not in our culture, when we tip is because the worker impressed us.

I think thats the thing I hate the most about tipping culture. Anywhere else in the world, a nice waiter is a nice waiter, no question. And often, they treat you better then they do in America! In America, nearly all 'nice' waiters are just fishing for tips, because they need them to survive.

A tip to me will always be a case to praise excellent service, regular service being what I god damn paid for and shit service being a "I'll tell everyone not to come so you lose more money" tip.
Maybe it's because I lived in America all my life, but almost all the time it seems genuine. I do agree that Tipping is a hassle, mainly because once I pay my bill I want to leave, and not have to figure out the tip. I don't see anything wrong with tipping, but I can see where it would be a problem. I never did any type of job that I could be tipped for, so I don't have any experience to say one thing or the other.

I will disagree with the people who say waiters have to do nothing. Especially if they are working during a busy time, they have to wait lots of tables, keep orders straight, and they have to deal with the customers directly. If the kitchen messes up the order, even if the waiter corrected it before it came out, the waiter will be yelled at for what happened. Now it doesn't happen all the time, but they do have to keep customers happy when things get backed up.
