Now, I bought a few games over the Steam Summer Sale, just like everyone else. In my case, one of them was Deus Ex. From what very little I've seen and heard of it, it has an interesting concept, but it might be a little out of my field. It's not the graphics - I like the graphics in Earthbound, if that counts for anything. Basically, it's that it does a whole lot of stuff I'm not usually into.

So, do you guys have any tips to help a complete newbie, with rather limited WRPG experience and a decent amount of skill with FPS games, enjoy Deus Ex?

Here's a few other things:
-I don't mind playing on Easy. Heck, I play Bioshock on Easy, just because I like it on that level.
-Giving me a good starting build is fine.
-I'm not particularly good at stealth in first person (I can't even do the stealth bit in the tutorial, and I gave up on it after Anna's voice got annoying), so tips for that would also be nice.
-If it takes a little while to get really good, then telling me when the pick-up point is... do it or don't, I don't really care, just say it takes a while.

The tutorial stealth section is harder than the rest of the stealth in the game. Like you have more room to stay away form enemies later on and depending on the augs you choose stealth is easier even at the end of the game than in the training. Also, the stealth in the game is optional anyway.

I say pistols are a good skill to focus on especially at the beginning of the game. Also, if you sneak behind an enemy with a baton DO NOT aim for the head but for the back. STrange I know. Didn't realize it myself from playing and beating the game multiple times until I read it on a message board, lol.

Remember most areas in the game have multiple paths. I say it is much easier to try to climb up the ladders in the back and do a few jumps to get to the roof in the first level for instance rather than trying to go straight through the main entrance with the robot patrolling.

Also, I recommend spamming quick saving. Not just to make the game easier but to make it more fun at least to me. I find it very fun just experimenting with random things or weapons or just to see if something works or not but saving before hand. I still die a often in the game because I just make silly mistakes. lol

Well the main one at this point is to remember the tech is old, i.e. it looks like shite on a biscuit.
The other is this is an RPG, right down to the combat mechanics, alot of people rave on and on: "combat sucks cuz not a shooter like call a doody", no it really isn't it's an RPG, most of the combat hinges on character ability.

- quick save/load is your bestest friend for the duration of this game
- play on easy only if you find it too hard, the games has a much better feel on harder settings
- stealth is optional, you can go the gung-ho approach and just pop everyone in the head, just be sure to have a gun and get silent run later on
- the game needs patience, there are alot of hidden paths, traps and enemies around so you need to observe the area before you rush in

The best advice I can give you is to play this game like you're Snake-Eyes on cybernetic-steroids.

I call it the WWSEOCSD? style.

I'd disagree here. When it comes to combat the rpg elements really only determine how easy it is to use the weapons at your disposal. Skill, timing and position still make a huge difference. Contrast this with say, Fallout 3, where your stats affect just about everything when it comes to combat.

Essentially Deus Ex is a shooter (assuming you shoot people) with RPG mechanics. And it's all the better for it.

Ok, here's a few tips I can give a new recruit to the Deus Ex Awesomeness.

1) The first level is REALLY not indicative of the game's quality. Seriously, the first mission sucks, it gets waaaay better. One you hit Hell's kitchen (like...2 missions into the game) the game picks up and gives you more options and more side stuff to do. I personally found it to really get it in gear once you go "somewhere really far away".

2) If you're playing without any mods, the laser scope is super cheap. It essentially makes every hit a direct hit, regardless of your accuracy, AS LONG AS YOU MAKE SURE TO TURN IT ON! For super cheapness, put it on an assault rifle.

3) Tranq darts are very situational. unless you have a high pistol skill and get a headshot, the enemy will be able to alert backup, or retaliate before he blacks out.

4) I personally found the game to be most fun if you play it ambusher style. Set up traps and lure the enemy into them. Or just get the jump on them with a well placed headshot.

5) I found melee to be largely useless in the game so I never put points into it. There IS an amazing weapon later, though. And it kills most enemies in one shot anyway, even if you don't put any points into it. You will know it, when you see it. Trust me on that.

6) Important things to upgrade are electronics and lockpicking (so you can save on tools), rifle accuracy, if you're into sniping (max level accuracy makes it so you have no scope drift and no recoil...awesome), and maybe electronics, if you like to read all the info in the emails (which are pretty damn good)

7) Just play it your way. Find weapons you like, find a playstyle you like, whether it's pure combat, all stealth, or ambushing. Also, there are usually multiple ways to resolve a problem. Look around and ask around before committing to anything.

8) When using the stun rod...apparently aiming for the legs makes it a one hit KO. Figure that one out.

Enjoy! I found the game to be a bit clunky....but hot damn was it fun. And the story gets really good too.

Quiet time play, and no interruptions, let yourself be immersed for the first 3 hours and then you'll be hooked.
