Hello, yes, i know there were topics like this, suggest sandbox games like Fallout 3/Morrowind/oblivion/skyrim/Mount & blade, BUT this one has two extra conditions:

1. the game must be older than 2004 (because my computer can't really handle anything newer), and newer than 1996 (because i can't really enjoy anything older than that).

2. it must not be from bethesda, must not be Gothic, really, the less it's known the better, i'm looking for games that were underrated, or just slipped under the media radar (something like Deus, for example (NOT Deus Ex), but that one i can't get to run properly :().

(3. doesn't necessarily have to be RPG, but extensive freedom and strong sense of development (e.g. in mount&blade you start as one man, and build bigger and bigger own army, in skyrim you can buy houses, etc...) is very preffered)

i realize this is probably quite hard set of conditions, but if anyone would try i'd appreciate any tips, thank you.

Naaaaaaaaaaaah.
Post your PC specs. There are games that run on considerably weak configurations despite being fairly new.

Until then you may want to check <link=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/arcanum_of_steamworks_and_magick_obscura>Arcanum

Despite not being true sandbox games, you may find Drakensang, Knights of the Old Republic (aka KOTOR) interesting.

Be sure to visit this site. They offer good games for reasonable prices. :)

HP 530
Intel® Core? Duo T2400 (2x 1.8 GHz)
Mobile? Intel® 945GM Express Chipset
2 GB RAM
Graphics card: Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950 - up to 224 megs shared

the main hurdle for me seems to be Shader Model, i have only 2.0 and many games newer than 2005 which i'm 90% sure would run fine (on the lowest settings, i don't care too much about the graphics, i just want to play) simply refuse to because they require Shader model 3.0, and not even 3D Analyze can fool them.

the thing is that i'm looking for games that kind of base their main gameplay around the sandbox/open-world principles, like X-com (UFO: Enemy unknown) did, there was a campaign, and something like story progress, but it all happened through research and there were no rigid quests/missions, your progress (and gameplay story) depended entirely on how you decided to proceed, so games like Arcanum/KOTOR (though being good) don't really suit this, not even morrowind, where this kind of gameplay felt shallow and generic to me... i'm looking for games that (ideally) throw you in its world, present you all its possibilities and leave all the progress up to you.

What about Unreal World? It's a roguelike where you survive in iron age Finland. It's all about making a cottage, trading, fending off bandits, and so on. Not my thing, but it sounds like it might be yours.

yes, it very much is, but i have some trouble getting through the convoulted/complicated controls and principles, it's kind of too much hardcore rougelike for me. i'll get into it eventually, but i was looking for something... yes, similar, but a little more user-friendly.
