I was thinking of making a cleric in D&D. I was considering getting him Spirit Guardian so it can act as his Stand.

Any other suggestions people can hive me to mske him a proper JoJo? (thinking of naming him Joshua Giovanni, any ideas for a better name?)

Stand? Do you mean like Stephen King's book, The Stand?

EDIT: His proper "JoJo"? I'm guessing you're using slang I'm not familiar with.

I'm talking about JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: http://jojo.wikia.com/wiki/Stand

The protagonists have names with the syllable Jo in both names in some way (sometimes they stretch, like one of the kanji in Josuke Higashitaka's name also being readable as jo, and the italian one being named Giorno Giovanna).

Oh. I can't help you with that. On the plus side I've moved this thread to Gaming Discussion (where it belongs) where you may actually get some helpful input. Hope you do. :)

Wait, isn't the Gaming section only for video games? I'm asking for feedback on a Dungeons and Dragons character.

Gracious, no! Tabletop games are (used to be) commonly discussed in Gaming Discussion. It's for discussing "games", not merely "computer games".

Which edition are we talking here? 3.5/Pathfinder? 4E? 5E?

The closest D&D approximation of a Stand User I can think of is a 3.5 Psion with the Metacreativity discipline refluffed a little so his powers actually come from his Astral Construct. Be sure to take a lot of the more space/time bendy powers. Optionally, you can also throw in 1 level of Monk and get the Monastic Training and Tashalatora feats so your psionic/monk levels stack for the purposes of unarmed damage, bonus to AC and Flurry of Blows and such. Again, refluff as needed.

That said, D&D is not a good system for the whole 'I want to play anime character x' thing. You'd be better off looking at systems like FATE or Exalted. Their rules lend themselves better towards characters with OTT anime-like abilities.

If I remember correctly, there was some class in either 3.5 or 4E which basically had a dedicated companion do most of the fighty stuff - that can also work. I want to say it was the 4E shaman but I am not completely sure.

I do agree with that, though. D&D gets used for a generic system much too often, when there are way better alternatives. I want to also throw in GURPS into those suggestions - it's a generic point buy role playing system, where you can build pretty much anything you want by picking the correct powers and abilities and putting whatever fluff you want for them.

5E, and it's the only system I have people to play with.

Conjuration Wizard who knows a lot of summon spells? Maybe take resilient: Constitution so they don't break away and you can comfortably stay within 10 feet?
Maybe look at the Mystic? It's adventurer's league legal, but it is a bit of a mess.

Or maybe it's time to look into homebrewery?

I'm going to go with others and say a D20 system is not ideal for a stand character, maybe try White Wolf's system instead (Exalted, World of Darkness, Scion). But Pathfinder, not true D&D but still a D20 System, does have a Spiritualist class and the Summoner Class which is probably the best you're gonna get for a similar system.

Honestly? A Barbarian with the Totem Warrior specialisation. Just fluff his totem spirit as his Stand. Each time the character Rages he just activates his Stand. That might be the simplest way of going about it if you want to keep it relatively martial ala Jotaro.

Eh, I don't think any particular part of WoD really fits in. The way I understand it, a Stand is kind-a like a creature you summon which has various powers. In D&D you have some sort of modified summoning, but there isn't really an analogy in WoD. Sure, summoners are a thing but not really in that way. I suppose you could just make a supernatural character and refluff them as the Stand and then just play a normal one but...you can do that in any system. In D&D you can just generate, say, a barbarian and then your character will use the barb as a Stand.
