I'm currently aching for some gunslinging fun, so I've been searching for good FPS's. The last really good shooters (single-player wise) I played were Call of Duty 4 and Gears of War 2. I've played good ones, but those were exceptional. I'm getting into Borderlands, but I'm playing on my brother's, and I only visit him once a week. Any tips? I like ones with a little tactical shooting, where it's not just walking into enemy base with bullets flying. But I like when it's a bit more fast-paced shooting, which is why I liked COD4 so much.

Also, while I like Borderlands, I mainly dislike RPG's like Fallout 3 where you have to walk ten miles before you get to shoot anything (and even then it's not that fun). I tried playing F.E.A.R cause it was a 100% FPS with high praise, but the guns were just terrible and there was no satisfaction in killing. (And if you're thinking it, yes, I've tried Half-Life, didn't like it)

EDIT: Sorry for not mentioning, I own a 360 and PC, not a PS3.

well, since you mentioned Gears of War 2, I'm guessing you don't mind if its third person either.

If thats the case, I highly recommend Uncharted 2 - the single player is fast, action packed and a blast, while the multiplayer is pretty damned good too. Pretty, too. (shame it loses major points for 0 creativity :p)

For FPS's, try out Half Life 2 if you already haven't. Also, MW2 is comming out soon, and thats bound to be awesometh.

edit: just read the whole bit about Half Life, nevermind. Still, I nevertheless recommend the other titles.

It's some years old, but it sounds like you might like Far Cry. There can be some space between the firefights, but it's one of the best combinations of realism and action I've ever come across; realistic enough that you can't take on a whole base full of guys without a little bit of planning and strategizing, but arcadey enough that you don't have to worry about getting headshotted by someone you can't see and dying instantaneously.

If you have a PS3 i recommend getting into the MAG beta. Just preorder it and they give you a code to get into it and if you don't like it just move your down payment onto another game.

Bioshock. Not because of gameplay (though gameplay is awesome), but because it has one of the best, most thematic and meaningful stories and atmospheres in all of gaming.

Don't be hatin' on Fallout 3.

I suggest you try Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas and/or Vegas 2. First Person Shooters with a touch of strategy involved. If you're not picky, there's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter and GRAW 2 on the Third Person Shooter front.
What can I say, I didn't like it.

Tried RSV, the strategy wasn't that great, and there was nothing interesting except that. I tried the GRAW demo, never got the hang of it.

I hear good things about Uncharted 2. I might get it. Sadly, I'm too poor for a PS3.

Already played it, and it was awesome. I loved the story and atmosphere.

Team Fortress 2 if you haven't tried it yet. Keeps you occupied for a month or more.
I liked the gaming aspect, but the loading times were too much. Maybe it's just my computer, but until I get a better one, I can't stand waiting for so long.

Off the top of my head I'd recommend Left 4 Dead, as well as the upcoming second coming of Christ Modern Warfare 2.

Gears of War 2 isn't an FPS.
Sorry about that. Fixed it now. But could you add some actual recommendations instead of just correcting me?
Apologies, not really a shooter fan but I liked pretty much everything you said. You tried Halo 1/2/3/ODST? According to my mate; they're good. Killing Floor's great fun for a while, it's on the PC, though.
