Yeah, my advice is, don't. There's a reason why every other art-related site on the internet looks down on Deviantart (not least all the 13-year old yaoi furry "artists").
Depending on what sort of group you're going for, I'll bet there's a better method. Create a Facebook group maybe, or even make your own website using a free host (such as Google Sites).
