Ratchet and Clank (PS2)

It still looks great, but most importantly the controls are still rock solid.

The original Unreal, as well as Unreal Tournament. Quake III sucks, though, and Quake II doesn't like installing on modern operating systems.
Quake (go to the console and enter +mlook. You're welcome)
Medal of Honor and Medal of Honor: Underground (Go to the controls options, go for control scheme #4)
The Spyro trilogy. Shame nobody ever made any more Spyro games after Insomniac dropped the franchise. Ever. And anyone who says otherwise is lying and stupid.
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. Blood Omen has aged like roadkill, however.
Turok: Dinosaur Hunter. Controls take getting used to, but it's so damn fun.

I am going out on an limb and saying mainly late 2d rpgs for the snes and genesis Like shining force or Chrono Trigger. Even 17 years later on both games they are still fun to play and decent to look at It also does help they are out on ios devices as well so this generation of kids can enjoy them.

A lot of the older 2d sprite games have aged well in my opinion. Most older 3D games however, I don't know.

Example of some:
PSX - Alundra
Yup still looks good still plays good, bosses still have a ton of HP which will still surprise a vet who's gotten used to squishier bosses.

I want Viktor and Flik back =P

PSX/PC Blood Omen, Legacy of Kain

Probably my favourite game, now I'll admit it's graphics are a bit dated and the load times on the PSX were poor (PC version was better though). But in an age where we has such stellar VA performances such as in Resident Evil, Legacy of Kain really stood out.

Combined with excellent storytelling and a bleak decaying world, it has continued to be my most favourite game in an era that produced alot of forgettable stuff.

Truer words were never spoken. Loved those two. They could be badass, serious, and funny depending on the context; it's a simple definition of character.

They ascend from the mere dregs of "stereotypes" and "cliche's" and become something more interesting. Better still: Their backstory and motivations aren't the usual fare of convoluted gibberish that you get from such characters in jrpgs. Simple, and effective.

There hasn't quite been a platformer like it since (the sequel sucked rocks). Part platformer, part RPG with an interconnected world map.

Earth 2150 : The moon project.
One of my all time favorite RTS games which has held up really well since it was released in 2000.

Plus it still works today from the original disk , though you need one of the patches to get it to run stable on anything above XP.

I would say any Megaman game, maybe not the first one.

Star Ocean the second story is also a great game that aged well.

I loved Toomba, that game was great.

As far as for me games that aged well...

Shiny's Sacrifice - some of the most hilarious diety interactions and gameplay you'll find. My friend always got a kick out of the fact you someone creatures that help you regen your mana called manahoars. Though I was surprised when GOG picked it up, so people might still play it?

Spellforce series(all of them)

From the original Xbox

Kingdom Under Fire:Heroes/Crusaders, both have an awesome playstyle that just isn't matched by any other game although bladestorm tried something similar it was severely lacking in comparison.

Honorable Mentions are Grandia 2 and Full Sieken Densetsu 3(snes import}. I'd like to say Sub-Zero Anthologies but aside from the FMVs and rose colored glasses I'm not sure it actually holds up.

edit: I meant Grandia 2 not 3 whoops.

Ape Escape is fucking awesome. I wish it was available on PSN.

Look at it! Look how gorgeous it is!

That was the first game I thought of when I saw the thread title. Stylized graphics that are done well will always be aesthetically rich.

And I expected you to ninja me on this one, considering your avatar. I salute you, good sir.

Wind Waker is like 10 years old now and it still looks gorgeous. The art style is amazing.
Yes, I recently re-played this and it looks beautiful, honestly my mate was in awe when he realised I was playing a gamecube game but hell, most of the Nintendo classics age ridiculously well

Agreed 100%. To think that at the time of release people were sceptical about it...

My contribution: Ikaruga. Still looks spectacularly complex and beautiful to this day. Screenshots don't really do it since it looks best in full motion:

A buncha good games from the SNES, Genesis, GC, XBOX, & PS2. Developers got their shit together with regards to technology and games looked nice and played better.

Freelancer. Freelancer. FREELANCER.

Contols are nice, graphics are great, the skyboxes are STUNNING,and overall,a VERY good play. Then there's the Discovery mod for the game, which just adds a whole new level of awesome,if you play multiplayer...

And then there is a marverllous freeware game called Cave Story. I only picked it up a couple days ago,and get pwnt in Sacred Ground quite regularly, because I already used my Health Pot on the Red Demon, but that's not the point. The point is that the game is expertly crafted, with tight controls, great graphics for what appears to be a 16-bit game, the music is made of winsauce,and...It's just...Beautiful. It's free, and there's a translation out there (original is Japanese),so you have no excuse to not get it.

My two picks may not be as old as many of the other entries here, but they deserve mention. Amid a wave of the comparitive mediocrity of modern game releases,it's pleasing to see games of even that vintage stack up. Freelancer was released in 1999,with Cave Story (if TVTropes is to be believed) starting in 1999,releasing 2004,by one man. Not even ten years ago, these marvellous games were made. I only acquired them recently. They rocked my gaming world. And I can guarantee that they rocked others.
