Everything up to and including Adventure 2 was brilliant, even the spin-off like fighters and spinball. My favourite is either Sonic 2, Sonic 3 or Adventure 2. I honestly cannot pick between those 3.

Sonic 2 on the Megadrive. It is to me a complete game that feels like an amazing journey. Every level is brilliant in its own way and I can't really pick fault with it. I really appreciate Sonic 3 & Knuckles as well, but I really hate most of the Sonic 3 levels, which kind of taints it.

Special mention goes to Sonic Chaos on the Master System as well. Very different, but I still loved it.

Sonic 3 and Knuckles, I thought it took elements of the old games and just improved upon them. Better story, better graphics, new power ups, stronger level design, mind blowing music, etc etc.

Sonic Adventure 2 out of the 3D titles, I just feel it was a perfect fusion of Sonic action we all love and storytelling, with gameplay variety. Out of the 2D, I still love 2. It might be because it was my first video game ever, maybe.

For 3D - Sonic Unleashed. While Sonic was known for speed more than platforming on the Genesis, the Hedgehog engine in this game got the sense of speed right.

In 2D - Knuckles Chaotix - Sonic Colors/Rush Adventure/S3&K were going to end up in this spot, but the 32X game is my long time favorite. For two reasons: Unique gameplay with two characters, and the fact that it's damn near impossible to find now. SEGA, if you're still looking for games to celebrate Sonic's 20th in any form, rerelease this game on XBLA/PSN. It's a classic however you slice it.

Well, under normal circumstances, my answer is Sonic Adventure for Dreamcast. However, as I have not the 'cast anymore and I've not a Gamecube copy or the means to play one...frankly, the answer has to default to my Sonic Plus compendium of Sonic games, an old-schooler's paradise.
