So I have about 5 minutes to type this before I have to pack for school, so here goes:

Recently I came into about 60 or 70 worths of pounds which I decided to spend on video games. I spent a lot of it on a 2nd hand edition of Rock Band 2 and had a lot of fun with that. Yesterday I noticed the STEAM sale of Mass Effect, so after the second one being my favourite game ever - I thought it was worth the, yes that's right - 3 POUNDS! (You are so pissed off now if you missed that, AMIRITE?). I also decided to pick up KOTOR, being a big fan of BioWare and also got the first Half Life, considering how I don't like the second all that much. (Bear in mind I bought the Half Life: Source version).

What can I say about ALL OF THESE GAMES?

They are better than 95% of games out today. I'm a 13 year old who grew up as a graphics whore, but the gameplay in these games is better than gameplay in the current day games.

Nostalgia is usually to blame when people reminisce about old games, but I shit you not, the developers actually took TIME to go over these games and perfect them!

KOTOR starts you off with a good amount of weaponry and simple missions, with simple environments. I chose to be evil and found that I could get in a fight with most people, killing them simply. The story and dialogue is brilliant and I love the atmosphere in the game. Compared to most modern Star Wars (and yes, I am comparing an RPG to a shooter) shooters, which don't have anything more than a good Physics system and some models.

Half Life is blended perfectly and allows you to use your weapon to help you with the environment. It's linear, but also allows you to explore without getting off track, and the enemies and weapons are just fun to use. Not to mention a wide variety of fun and challenging puzzles.

and finally Mass Effect, now this is more recent than the other two, and I still love the second one more, but this game is still far better than most of the recent garbage coming out today.

Thoughts on old gameplay compared to the new?

Nothing's come close to Planescape: Torment's RPG story despite being over a decade old.

Nothing's topped Starcraft at being a Starcraft style RTS even after over a decade.

The atmosphere of BG2 still blows me away as well.

For the record, good gameplay cannot be attributed to when a game was made. There are amazing games made way back when, and there are amazing games made now. Heck, Mass Effect is a new enough game to attest to that: it can hardly be considered an old game.

But back to the OT, there are plenty of games that no one with true understanding of the medium could say are worse than modern games. But this simply goes to display a concept that we are more than familiar with in other artistic mediums: even with technological imitations of the past, great works were no less possible then than now. Lots of games back then sucked, and some were great; it's the same thing now. Sturgeon's Law applies in all time periods to all forms of art. The end.

I would still say Chrono Trigger is the best JRPG ever made. Only thing I would change is to put more Frog in!

WRONG! Best RPG ever.....Foolish man.
Baldur's Gate 2 is a far better RPG than Chrono Trigger could ever hope to be.

The fact that to this very day there is still an active and dedicated modding community for a game which is almost a decade old speaks to how long lasting and incredible the game can be to people.

When it comes to the games you listed you usually don't have to go into detail since this site sees its almost weekly battles of Half Life Sucks or Rules threads and the likes. I'd say Play some real old School games then start talking about games. I understand the Graphics Whore thing but once you stop caring how games look you start judging them better and truly analyzing them. That being said i used to play Text based games so graphics = 0 standing to me lol.
I got a FEVER...And the only cure... IS MORE FROG.

I judge JRPGs and WRPGs diffrently because I have a hard time grouping them together. But it does rate a lot higher then most WRPGs.

Only problem is it doesn't have Frog, also I can't find the damn game anywhere.

Old gameplay that was better when compared to the new eh?

I think that Jade empire was better than Mass effect by miles in terms of everything that Bioware attempts to encompass in their games. In terms of other Bioware games I've played there's KOTOR which was...alright (I don't see how it's as big of a deal as everyone says) and Mass Effect which...I just didn't like but Jade Empire, top ten games I've ever played.

While I agree that PS:T is completely amazing (honestly, I don't think the story is topped by anything even outside of games), I'd say the closest thing to a second place is Terranigma. Sadly, it's plagued by a godawful translation and less than stellar gameplay. Thankfully, I can read Japanese, so that removes half the problem.

Your profile says you're from the U.S., in which case I can recommend this item. [http://www.amazon.com/Baldurs-Gate-4-1-Boxset-Pc/dp/B000FGA1US/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1277106490&sr=8-1]

Baldur's Gate 1+2+both expansions for $20.

If there is one game purchase you make, I recommend this.

After you buy it, there's a number of mods to play through Baldur's Gate 1 using the Baldur's Gate 2 engine, giving - what I think - is a more enjoyable experience.

Either way. $20. Buy it. Now.

Thats a matter of opinion. Though its wrong its a matter of opinion lol. Soory had to say it. I never got into the Baldurs Gate Games. Maybe i will DL them illegally and try them out....Yeah i pirate.
You called Chrono Trigger the best RPG ever, and now you're disagreeing with me saying "it's a matter of opinion"? Well no duh.

Also: Douche. The games cost a pittance, a mere fraction of what a current gen game costs.

Pirating is just assholish.

Frog is such a compelling character, because he's essentially a Paladin. You don't find many of those in games that aren't crazy Knight Templars or douchebags.

Ahh Frog...you made that game awesome for me.
