Well I've noticed this before but didn't bother me that much until, my friend said something to me at school. It made me think about the music we listen to nowadays.

It's all about relationships and love. Turn on the radio, TV, and listen to the things to hear. You aren't hearing anything really different are you? This has bothered me because nobody is doing anything really different. It's all sex, relationships and love. Now I'm not saying all music is like this but deffiently the majority is.

I would like your thoughts on it.

Um...it's pretty much always been like that. Like 99% percent of the Beatles' catalog is love songs. Maybe the 90's mixed it up with angst, but a good percent of popular music has always been about love. It's just a popular, easily relatable topic.

I think you would do well to spend an hour with some Jergen's and a box of Kleenex.

Really depends on where you look I guess. Sex sells, so of course mainstream music is going to abuse the hell out of the topic.

Saying nobody is doing anything different is pure ignorance. Just look at the black and death metal scenes. Pretty sure those guys aren't singing about a prom gone wrong.

I guess so, but their are tons of topics that can be sung, and a huge fanbase to go with it. But it seems only a minority does it. That's why I usually listen to Dnb :).

Hasn't it always been that way?
I'd say a good 85 - 95% of all songs are about relationships, sex or broken hearts.

Doesn't mean it's bad and it can get kinda annoying when in the wrong hands, but if the song is good, who cares what they're talking about? The subject of relationships is quite varied when told through different people.

You can have things like lovey [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Se5JLYKQfDU] or sappy [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAlrFJbGdgw] songs by The Beatles or you can have hateful [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RESRl39ZYns] and powerful [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LeG-6bpeUkA] songs about relations by bands like Strapping Young Lad.

Most music throughout time has been made with the theme of love/romance.

It's nothing new, nothing scary.

Really? See, I was under the impression that the majority of popular music these days was about....nothing. Nothing at all. Just egocentric babbling that happens to rhyme.

Well, as previous posters have said, this isn't something specific to current musicality.

It would depend on where you look for music; myself being a metalhead, love songs aren't the most common theme, however, there are instances, of course.
If you like a particular genre, do listen to it. Reoccurring themes may lack a certain originality, I guess, but if you really like the songs written about it, then hey, listen.

If it ain't about sex and love, it's about the lack of it. Or the search for it. Or the overabundance of it. And so on.

That's the way its been since people started putting words to music. 'tis nothing new. Nothing new at all.

Yeah, today's music centers too much on relationships and fucking. I miss the old days.

At the time of listening (now) the Mr. Belvedere theme song isn't really about love. It's about getting your shit together. So...ha?

Try listening to different genres. The shit that gets on the radio/tv is mainly dance-pop, which is always about that shit. It's called mainstream music, and it's the most evil form of capitalism.

See I'm skeptical about that. As others have said before, love and romance have been constant themes in most songs since music started to include lyrics. That said, while I'd say the majority of music today is indeed centered around one theme, the theme isn't necessariy meaningful or true romantic love, but rather shallow and meaningless love. If you're interested in music that is not centered around love, I'd say the metal scene is right up your alley. There are various enough metal sub-sets, each of which deal with seperate themes (some overlap, but there is a lot more variance than what people give it credit for)

Well then, I think we found your problem.
I haven't done that in years.
Well I don't really either, I use Youtube mostly but that's beside the point. I used it as a form of example.

It's friday, friday, friday...

The lyrics of modern music bothers me, but even more so is the introduction of an excessive use of autotune as the norm.

Right, but if I look at my itunes library, the lyrical content would be incredibly diverse, with relationships forming quite a small portion of it, in all honesty. It's not even about exception, it's the vast majority that goes without talking about it. The most popular songs will invariably be about relationships yes, but there you go. Humans love it, always have. The point is it's quite easy to find music you do like, and that's the end of that.
