I re-read an old quotation from Friedrich Nietzsche today:
"Admiration for a quality or an art can be so strong that it deters us from striving to possess it."
As a gamer, as well as a great admirer of the quality of reviewing, humour and editing on this site, I feel this statement could be particularly relevant to myself, as well as many other members of the community here. There's plenty we could do if we strive to be as good as those we admire, rather than simply standing back and appreciating.
Are we as gamers often guilty of exactly what this quotation suggests? What do you think, fellow Escapists?

If there are qualities or skills you admire in other people, why not try to be as good as these people at such things?

there are qualities in other people I admire greatly, but rather than trying to imitate things I like about others, I focus inward and improve qualities within myself that I admire.

Nietzsche's work is kind of dense. Taking his aphorisms at face value is kind of a no-no. At any rate, i do feel like not only should one's standards about other people's work should be high, but that the standards for one's own work should be much, much higher.
