... and I am really appreciating the view.
After burning myself on some newly released games with nickel - dime DLC policies or DRM schemes that did not let me play, which were also slashed heavily in price and sold as complete editions only months after I've decided to venture a bit back in time. I'm glad I did.
Started playing older games which I've either missed or did not play through entirely because I was too young back then. Played through System Shock 2, Planescape Torment, Rollercoaster Tycoon, Constructor, Dungeon Keeper, Fallout, Heroes of Might and Magic... The fact I liked the most is that I only needed to install the game to play it. Was not forced to go through hoops. Besides it was also a complete product with communities nurturing it with such love in they way of mods which I believe rivals sometimes with the love of the developers themselves ... perhaps even more.
I'm not saying that the older days were better. They had their own problems. Each era does. But I guess I'm a bit burned out on our era way of gaming with all the clients, installs, registers, DRM, DLC needed in order to get a fulfilling experience. Of course I'm also not saying that all games are likes this. Maybe I've just played too many as described.
My 'venture' also gave me the opportunity to watch the evolution of our beloved form of entertainment. It's a wonderful thing to behold. What was popular once, what is now. What influence still lingers, what is nowhere to be seen anymore... truly interesting. Like the inventory managment screen in System Shock 2... don't recall playing an FPS today with it.
I'm sorry for my rambling, but I guess I had to get off my chest. Has anyone else felt this way recently (of course someone probably has)? That they do not agree with current policies or the endless 'complete' version of games which made them flee a bit back in time? To experience older games? Games they've never played before and felt it was the right moment to do so now? Or to reminisce how it better back then? I'd like to hear.
