I know this is probably incongruent to the rest of the content on here, but I need some help nonetheless.

Basically, I'm Down in the mouth. My teeth hurt, and I suspect there's an abcess going on in there. So what's stopping me from heading on down to a dentist you may ask? My family. More specifically, my mother and sister whom I live with are very sensitive when it comes to hygiene, dental especially. So I fear them coming down on me like a ton of bricks because of a matter beyond my control

What's wrong with me? I fear short term consequences more than a condition that can easily become very serious. I feel stuck.

There are any number of things that can happen from unmitigated tooth decay, but I can say from firsthand knowledge that it's probably the most painful thing I've ever experienced, and I've cut myself/broken bones plenty of times.

The main problem for you is that you're right about at that age where wisdom teeth can become a problem. Is the pain near the back of your mouth? Have you had your wisdom teeth removed? If not, schedule a dentist's appointment as soon as possible. If you ignore wisdom teeth problems it will only compound further down the road. If any of your wisdom teeth are impacted [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impacted_wisdom_teeth] there's a risk of adjacent teeth getting damaged as well.

If it turns out you do need to get your wisdom teeth extracted, try and see if you can schedule it around a holiday. The surgery to remove wisdom teeth can sometimes cause severe swelling.

Regardless of what the issue is, you need to find out what it actually is in the first place. Go see a dentist. These things happen. It's just a part of life.

It could well be an issue with your wisdom teeth, I've had to have 1 extracted because the root grew incorrectly, mucked itself up and split in two. I left it until it became an abscess and it was the worst pain in my life, booked an appointment, but that was 2 1/2 weeks and by that time the root had died.

You really don't want to leave it, get it checked out ASAP. Trust me.

Also in relation to your family, just tell them that it's probably not your fault - wisdom teeth when they are coming through cause all sorts of havoc no amount of dental care can help.

No matter how seriously they come down on you, it's not going to be worth the agony of letting it get worse. If it's an abscess, you need to have it dealt with and cleaned before it gets too big and causes a serious infection. Infections are not to be messed around with, and only get worse with time. We have powerful antibiotics these days, but people can still get seriously messed up by them or even die if they let them go too far without treatment.

Put aside your pride and deal with it. Don't let your family shame you into letting this get out of control. It'll eventually blow over, everything does with time. However infections do not blow over with time, they swell and burst and poison your blood. So go for it, you can do it!

Does the tooth hurt if you put pressure on it, like if you were biting something hard? If so, it could well be an abscess. Get that checked out. Hell, get it checked out anyway, it's not normal for your teeth to hurt.

It could be a lot of things:

1.) Wisdom teeth, you're about that age. Some people have a jaw that is the wrong size so the wisdom teeth grow in awkwardly and put a lot of pressure on things. You may need to have them removed. Don't worry, it's not as horrible as everyone says.

2.) Cavity/tooth decay. Sometimes it just happens, regardless of how careful you are about sugar. You'll know because there will probably be a foul taste in your mouth and you might have inexplicable bad breath. The tooth will be especially sensitive to cold water.

3.) Abscess. Similar to above times 10, there will be a horrendous taste in your mouth and your breath will absolutely REEK. There will also likely be a swollen sore on the gum. You'll probably also have a fever.

4.) Gum disease. Similar to above. Check to see if the gum is bleeding, swollen, or has sores on it.

5.) Grinding or clenching teeth. Some people do this when they sleep and it can cause pain.

Most likely though, it's just a toothache that doesn't indicate anything serious. If it still hurts in a couple days or if the pain increase, then it's time to talk about going to the dentist. If it's an abscess or dead root canal, you don't want to go through the agony and possible facial deformity just because you were afraid of the dentist.
