"Random Likes" are defined here as stuff that you enjoy that may not be known, or even considered, by most people. Not to be confused with "Common Loves." Which are well-known and obvious enjoyments like a child's laughter or spring rain. I'll put my 3 up to start it off:

3. Smelling boiled potatoes - Growing up on the farm we had garden fresh potatoes at nearly every meal. And invariably they were boiled. Happiness via childhood association.

2. Drawing on a soft rubber surface with a ball point pen - If you've ever drawn on a racketball or a white eraser you know what I'm taking about.

1. Sitting down on a cold public toilet - Simply put my brain relates cleanliness to the fact that no one has recently been sitting on the seat. Erroneous logic I know, but it's better than a warm seat.

Lessee...

3) The smell of Gasoline. Yeah, yeah, I know, I just like it.

2) Planning something out, and watching it work. There's just something great about it, whether it be some form of strategy game or perhaps a new way to do my job even quicker and with even less effort.

1) Snow. Something about snow just makes me happy. Maybe it's just a Pavlovian response from when I was a kid, i dunno.

Hm. I actually had to think about this, but I finally came up with:

1. I actually share your love of the smell of boiled potatoes, OP- especially red potatoes. One of my favorite things to have at mealtime since I was a wee lil' gal. I think the red-headed-Irish-girl thing has a lot to do with this.

2. The sound of a fan running. It's really relaxing. Probably because I hate the heat.

3. The smell of grape scented markers. Not all scented markers. Just grape. It's probably some childhood love that I'm not even aware of. I don't even know...

I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one. Whenever I've mentioned the aroma before, the comment only garnered confused looks.

O.T. In a shameless effort the try and revive this thread, I'll throw some more out that come from family members.

- My mother enjoys the smell of manure. She says it reminds her of growing up on the ranch and riding her horses.

- My wife relishes the sting of mild sunburn. She figures it's the outcome of a good day in the sun.

That feels really good for some reason.

1) The smell outside when it's raining.

2) Cold showers.

3) The ring tone from a Gmail call.

- I enjoy the smell of gunpowder/ cordite. I probably like it far too much to be considered of stable mental health, but oh well :)

- Rubbing my leg/ leg hair when I'm wearing shorts or whatever. Sounds weird and perverted I know, and I only do it when I'm by myself lest I attract dissaproving glances. I just like it. Its only the same as stroking a beard really.

- Dogs ears. Goddamit I love dog's ears. The velvet-like feel of them is just brilliant, so whenever there's a dog about I always make sure I rub and scratch it's ears. I just hope they enjoy it as much as I do...

1. Our phone saying "Please reset time to answering system". This one requires a bit of an explanation.

You see, we get power outs... a few times a year, roughly. Sometimes, they last for a whole day. And when you've spent the last 18 hours playing Scrabble, there is nothing sweeter than the sound of all the various things in the house turning on; lights, fans, TV, radio, and of course, the phone. Thus, every time I hear the words "Please reset time to answering system" in a flat male voice, I experience a surge of joy, because it means the phone has reset, which means the power is back.

2. The burn of mouthwash. Perhaps not a random like at all, I don't know, I've never asked anyone; but if mouthwash doesn't burn my mouth, I don't feel like I've properly cleaned it.

3. The sound of a busy keyboard. No doubt spawned from my own enjoyment of typing. Tap tappety tap tap. Not constant spamming of buttons; actual busyness. Like a burst of activity, followed by a few hesitant strokes, then silence; then a few more, then another flurry. And so on.

Here are mine in no particular order:

1. I love the sound of rain pattering against the window. I love it when it is raining and I am indoors.

2. The smell of cut grass. It reminds me of the summer.

3. Watching Law & Order: Criminal intent I just love watching that show, just the Goren and Eames episodes though, I am not too keen on the other detectives. It is also the one TV programme where I want people to be quiet when I watch it, especially if it is an episode I haven't seen it before.

1. Getting wet from the rain. Head to toe dripping.
2. A knock on the door or the phone ringing and it's not for me.
3. Cold coins in my hands and it's smell.

I would agree that these are definitely lovely, but I'd put them in the aforementioned "Common Loves" category. I'd like to hear things that are more esoteric and obscure. Make them personal. That's where the really interesting stuff is.

#1: The scent of the sea. This might not be particurily uncommon, but the smell of salt or sweet water in the morning/day/evening is all I need to feel alright. I probably get this from growing up by the sea and from fishing all my life.

#2: Braided, matted hair. I can't understand why more women don't braid their hair, I think it's absolutely wonderful. Just to be clear, I am talking about one, sort of loose, braid hanging over one shoulder. (The smell of a woman's hair is also lovely.

#3: The smell of napalm in the morning. Alright, kidding:

Real #3: The sound of my typewriter and the smell of the ink.

(#4: Cooking for friends)

(#5: The first sip of a Guinness)

(#6: Telling stories.)

(I could probably think of a million of these, and that's enough for me not to be able to pick only three.)

I love that too. When I was a kid, me and dad would go out to the fire range, and he would shoot clay pidgeons and this big moving elk target. The smell of black gunpowder from his flintlock, which he mainly shot for fun, still has a place in my heart.

2.) Going to department stores and smelling all the perfumes.
3.) Touching people's hair. Don't ask.

1.- My girlfriend has a weird fetish where she grabs my hand and puts it against her lips, and she can literally do this for hours. I sort of grew fond of it.
2.- I like a lot of smells, and with just these particular smells I have an uncanny ability to smell them from really far away. I mean ridiculously far away as long as the wind is right, creeps a lot of people out.
3.- The taste of metal, sometimes, I dunno...

wow I'm effing weird.

I like many of the things mentioned like snow, rain, touching people's hair...

3 of my own:

- Crumbling dry leaves or blades of grass in my fingers.

- Some bad quality song recordings that have a distant or slightly muffled sound as if you're hearing it through a wall or a forest.

- Empty rooms, empty places, bland architecture, shipping crates, lonely staircases (unless they're scary).
