I Am Legend would have been so much better if it had the original book's ending.

Like the movie, Neville killed a lot of the infected and tried to find a cure. The difference is that in the book the infected were slowly trying to overcome their disease and build a new society. The protagonist is executed by this new society in the end, when he realizes that he, a remnant of old humanity, is now a legend to the new race born of the infection. He recognises that their desire to kill him is not something he can condemn. As he dies, he thinks: "[I am] a new superstition entering the unassailable fortress of forever. I am legend."
There actually was a different ending to the movie which was way better than the one we got. The only problem was that idiot focus groups were idiots and whined about the ending not being action-y enough. It wasn't exactly the same as the book ending you described but it was closer and way better than the movie ending we got.

Basically the one Zombie that got kidnapped by Neville to try and get a cure from was the wife of one of the Zombie Dudes. So most of the time they were just trying to save one of their own. It also shows that they are getting more intelligent than first assumed and therefore hints a bit about them maybe building a society on their own.

You can watch that ending on youtube, it's from the directors cut. So my point is: You can't blame the directors 100% on the ending. They originally did made a good one and were kinda forced to change it.
The extended director's cut was so much better than the original. I have a copy of it and the "controversial ending" was far superior(though the only thing controversial about it is perhaps the fact that the ending allowed a black man to survive a horror movie). It also had a few random scenes that actually tied the movie together a bit better as well. All in all, I actually really liked it. I think as far as acting goes, it was Will Smith at his best.

I said this exact same thing before...however nobody reads anymore or understands that this was a 150 page novel that so many have tried to make into a full length film without even understanding the subtext.
I thought the first one did it fairly well (the subtext). He realized he was the monster for that new society.

It's a shame his acting didn't save the final version. But I agree. If he had acted bad in the dog scene, I think I wouldn't had shed a tear that night...

I'm assuming you're talking about the Omega Man, which had far more problems than the subtext.

I was talking about "The Last Man on Earth". Where the infected girl tells him he is a legend between them. Moving at day instead of at night, leaving evidence of his presence with bloodless corpes.

And his last words were: They were afraid of me...

Oh god yes. That part always hits me hard. I've never been able to watch that scene dry eyed. Even just thinking about it makes me tear up.

Although it's not a film, the ending of the Futurama episode "Jurrasic Bark" will hit you in the feels every time.

Oh god, you just had to mention it, had you? I always go to pieces after even thinking about that episode.
