So, yeah, post your top 5 movies here and explain why.

Here's my list, note that due to my lack of brain power, I have yet to see The Godfather, Casablanca, or a lot of the other classics. Don't bash meh. D;

5. Howl's Moving Castle: I knew I had to put a Hayao Miyazaki movie in here, and this and Spirited Away battled for this spot, but I suppose I just enjoyed the Moving Castle a bit more. It's a great fantasy movie with some excellent animation, some really interesting characters, and, as per normal Miyazaki movies, a plot that makes your head spin. It's great fun to watch, though.

4. Saving Private Ryan: Of all the millions of war movies out there, this one stands out. I suppose one reason is because it's ending isn't really much of a happy "Yay, we beat the Japanese and Germans! USA! USA!" The acting was great, especially by Tom Hanks.

3. Ratatouile: Of course Pixar gets a spot on my list, it's freaking Pixar! Ratatouile was a hell of a ride, with some real dilemas, some really interesting and unique characters, and a really surprising ending. All the Pixar movies are superb, but this one always really stood out for me.

2. Forest Gump: A movie that is able to pull off comedy, action, and drama interchangeably. One moment you'll be laughing your head off, and then the next you'll find yourself with a tear in your eye, and the changes are so subtle that you simply can't notice them. Plus, it has Tom Hanks. Tom. Freaking. HANKS (If you hadn't yet noticed, I like Tom Hanks. A lot.)

1. The Shawshank Redemption: Filmed in my hometown of Mansfield, Ohio, this movie is simply a delight to watch. It has great plot, character development, acting (Morgan Freeman FTW), and the atmosphere is just perfect. I really can't think of much, if any criticism for this movie.

I agree with Saving Private Ryan and The Shawshank Redemption. I can't post my Top 5 at the moment because I'm still watching classic movies. Such as Frankenstein and like you said Casablanca.

5. Watchmen: I could say why, but Bob does it better. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/the-escapist-presents/622-MovieBob-Reviews-Watchmen]

4. Inside Man: It's a stand-off movie with a central puzzle to it that never reveals it secret until the very end, all while maintaining the numerous questions of "why the f--k are they doing that?"

3. The Matrix: Yeah, there's the crappy dialoge, but Josh Anderson's trip into the real world is the ultimate combination of the hero's tale with the Allegory of the Cave.

2. Casino Royale (w/ Daniel Craig): Say what you want about the new James Bond style, but I love the fact that they turned him into a proper psychopath like a real assassin. If anything else, just use it as an excuse to stare at his sweet abs.

1. Ghost in the Shell: While Akira is definately there in my heart, Ghost in the Shell goes so deep into the very definition of what it means to be human that it truely tops my list.

In no specific order (Except for the first one):

Lucky Number Slevin (Perfection)
Terminator 2 (Best action movie)
Resevoir Dogs/Pulp Fiction (I can't decide which is the better Tarentino movie)
And... Uh... I really can't think of a fourth and fifth off the top of my head. Those are my real stand outs, after that, everything just seems too close. War, Watchmen, Shawshank Redemption, District 9, all great films, but I don't know which pull ahead.

5. Never Back Down - Mediocre by all standards, but it's one of those movies I can watch over and over and not get sick of. It's fun to turn your brain off and watch all the sexy PG-13 violence.

4. Forgetting Sarah Marshall - Again, a movie I can watch ad nauseum and not get tired of. Well written, hilarious when it wants to be, and easy to relate to (we have all been in this situation).

3. American History X - Deep, real characters that develop believably through the course of the movie, challenging subject matter, and fantastic acting. WHY DID ED NORTON NOT WIN THE OSCAR FOR THIS?!?!

2. (tie) Hot Fuzz/Shaun of the Dead - I honestly don't know which Simon Pegg/Nick Frost/Edgar Wright movie I like better. They're both brilliant.

1. Fight Club - If you've seen this movie and actually get it, you know why this is my #1. Also, once again, EDWARD F**KING NORTON!!

Alien, or Aliens? Aliens was rather subpar in my opinion... decent enough action pic, but little else.

I can go either way, actually, but for different reasons. Aliens has been a personal favorite as an action thriller for a long time. Alien, however, I watched for the first time when I was 10, and carries the distinction of being the only movie ever to give me nightmares...

No real order to these

Naked Gun (trilogy) can always make me laugh and Nelson has perfect comic timing

Seven - Pitt and Freeman are just amazing with incredible writing and the ending with Spacey is one of the best in film history

UP - Great Pixar film and you really care about all the characters, the first 15 minutes is more hard hitting then many dramatic films

Snatch - I have a thing for Brad Pitt movies, I actually like this one more then lock stock. well written and funny script and all the actors are perfect

Predator - Amazing build up to the finale.

Honarable mentions go to Fight Club, Flying High 1 & 2 (Airplane in USA) and Shaun of the Dead.

1. Fandango - Great, just super great movie about friends. These guys are exactly like me and my buddies down to Dom. Plus alot of the places they go in the movie, me and my buddies frequented when we were in school. I've actually been to Dom, and I've stood on the rock Kevin Costner stands on at the end.

2. The Fall - Entertaining fantasy, it's like a kids book for adults. Plus it's very visually appealing and has a great director. It's just a super well done movie.

3. Below - Wonderful suspense thriller, based in a WWII submarine.

4. Streetcar Named Desire - Just a freaking wonderful story about love and desire. One of the best classics I've seen.

5. Zachariah - Probably one of the greatest westerns ever made.

Notable mention:
View From the Top - about a flight attendant
Run Silent, Run Deep - Great submarine movie
The Boys in Company C - About a company in Vietnam, R. Lee Ermey's first military movie.
Crimson Tide - Another good submarine movie
Downfall - End of the Third Reich
The Believer - About a Jewish Nazi, very good movie about morals and biggotry.
Dr. Strangelove - Doomsday device.
Brick - Detective movie about some kids in high school dealing with drugs and love.

Enjoy.

Memento - Unlike anything else I have ever seen. Such a great film to re-watch and pick up on all the little hints.
Dr. Strangelove - BEST COMEDY OF ALL TIME
Pulp Fiction - I love Kill Bill (especially vol. 2, but I try to think of them as just one film) and Inglourious Basterds, but Pulp Fiction is IMO Tarantino's best.
Shawshank Redemption - Probably my least favorite of the five, but the film really is flawless. Great acting, plot, dialogue, it has it all.
2001: A Space Odyssey - A work of art, leaves me breathless every time I see it.

Honorable mentions go to In Bruges, King of Comedy, A Clockwork Orange, and The Godfather.
