I'm not really a big shooter fan, but i really like TF2 and the fact that it was placed below COD is just something i can't understand.

Here's my top 10 FPS games.
Since I'm not into the genre I'll break the franchise rule so I can list 10:

1. Metroid Prime 3
2. Borderlands
3. Metroid Prime
4. Resistance: Fall of Man
5. Borderlands 2
6. COD4: MW
7. Half-Life 2
8. Bioshock
9. Goldeneye
10. Doom 3

Note: I'm not into online gaming, which might explain the lack of competitive FPS games listed.

House of the Dead wasn't on any list so far, therefore you all are dead to me.

Dead to me.
Any game that required me to stand in an arcade feeding pound coins to a ravenous machine that just made me feel bad at life is not getting into my top ten. Not that I have a top ten, because I suck at FPS and barely even remember half the ones I've played.

OT: I remember XIII being interesting, but that's about it. Other than Goldeneye, obviously; had a crack at it again round a friend's place recently, and absolutely smashed his back doors in. Turns out that unlike when I was a kid, I'm actually quite good at Goldeneye. I wonder when that happened?

Why the fuck does the first Unreal game never get any love?

Beautiful graphics and aesthetic design, colour, lighting, etc. Huge, spectacular levels based on creative ideas and almost seamless transitions between them. A fantastic soundtrack and a fairly compelling story subtly integrated into the design and progression of the levels, mixed in with the puzzles and details of the environment. Puzzles involved reading, logic, even riddles on occasion.

A classical FPS arsenal; creative weapons with multiple functions and combos. Enemies that dodge and maneuver, even if they are a bit bullet-spongey otherwise. A variety of tactical power-ups and toolss.

Plus the engine's various incarnations have been used for about half a million games since.
I love the original Unreal, looked amazing at the time and I still remember that corridor where you get the first real encounter. Walking along and then all the lights start going out one by one and then..........

1. Stalker. It requires neither praise nor superlatives.

And the rest is completely irrelevant.

#1 Half-Life 2
#2 Fallout 3
#3 Timesplitters: Future Perfect

Having said that, I haven't played many FPS's but these are all fantastic.

I look at them from the perspective of when they came out. As in what the possibilities and such were for that time, and only games I've actually also played. Hard to judge games I haven't played.

1: Half Life 2.
2: Counter Strike 1.6
3: F.E.A.R.
4: Unreal Tournament
5: Call of Duty 1

Close calls:
Quake, Unreal, Doom 3, Half Life 1

1: Timesplitters 2

As for the rest, well it's all under Timesplitters 2. For Timesplitters 2 is the best.

2.Bioshock
3.TF2
4.Doom
5.Counterstrike

I know that there's a bit of bias towards Valve, but what can I say? They've made some great games.

I think you really need to differentiate between the single player experience in an FPS and the multiplayer as many amazing FPSs like Far Cry 3 have sub-par multiplayer. And really people, stop throwing in games just because they're in first person. First person views are used in a multitude of various genres such as FPSs, RPGs, Puzzle games, and straight up adventure games (ie Metroid Prime--which was a FPAdventure game not a shooter...it didn't even have aiming for god's sake).
This. Multiplayer and single player games are different things, and should be judged seperately. However, I wouldn't say that a game has to be in either category- I would put CoD:MW high on both lists.
Anyway, why is timesplitters not on that list?

I actually think the list is pretty good, although I would definitely swap in Halo 3 for Halo: CE, move Goldeneye to the top, replace Starsiege with Bioshock, mov-- actually, I'll just make a new list:

10.Unreal Tournament-=- (Even today this beast is entertaining as hell)
9. Doom -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-(Where would we be without Doom? Not that I ever really played it much, but I know how important it was)
8. Team Fortress 2 -=-=-=-(the best class-based multiplayer out there)
7. Left 4 Dead -=-=-=-=-=-(The best Co-operative FPS out there in my opinion)
6. Star Wars: Battlefront -(I played it in 1st person so it counts; here mainly for personal nostalgia)
5. Halo: CE -=-=-=-=-=-=-=(Revolutionised FPSes, for better or worse; brilliantly made shooter)
4. Half Life 2 -=-=-=-=-=-=("Wait, FPSes can have a STORY?!")
3. Bioshock -=-=-=-=-=-=-=(As a shooter it wasn't actually that great, but it taught me that a game could be ABOUT something)
2. Goldeneye-=-=-=-=-=-=-(my first FPS, important in its own right)
1. COD4 -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-(Probably my single favourite multiplayer ever made; I have plugged weeks and weeks into this game)

It took sixteen posts for somebody to mention Wolfenstein 3D. This makes me sad. Come on people, the third boss is Hitler in a robot suit quad-wielding miniguns. Without wishing to go all Godwin on this nut, you can't ignore that.

But no. These lists are the usual "nothing happened in gaming prior to ten years ago" that all these things always consist of. "Top FPS OF ALL TIME!!!!!" my arse. I see Doom's getting a token mention, but that's about it.

The top FPS of all time is clearly Doom. I mean isn't every FPS ever just a Doom clone? As we all know, the original must be the best and nothing can ever contest that, even if better games are released later the original is still the best. It says so right on the first page of the critic handbook.

I'll just limit it to a Top 5 because... reasons.

1- Bulletstorm
2- Team Fortress 2
3- Deus Ex: Human Revolution
4- Metro 2033
5- Serious Sam 3: BFE

1 - Halo Reach (I love all of them but despite the lack of Cortana this one is probably my favourite.)
2 - Doom 3 (Why? Because this game is well designed and really scary... Well, until you get the mini gun.)
3 - Deus Ex HR (Stealth, gunplay, punch ups, whores, hacking, decisions, shades implanted into your face... Oh yes!)
4 - CoD WaW (Like all the games but I feel World at War is the best, it really gave a nice WWII feeling... Also, Resnov.)
5 - Dishonoured (Just... Wow... Would've been higher if it weren't for how short it was.)
6 - Time Splitters: Future Perfect (Do I even need to say it?)
7 - Bioshock (You know why... It's because it's friggin' awesome)
8 - Far Cry Instincts (Campy, colourful and bloody!)
9 - Planet Side 2 (Like BF only bigger and more purple... Vanu for life!)
10 - Medal of Honour Airborne (I CAN FLY!!!)

Really tough list to make...
