OK guys I know it?s been a while since I did my last one but I?ve been busy lately so I wasn?t able to get this list out as quickly as I would?ve liked.
But here it is. My final top ten list of the Playstation games.
Please bear in mind that there will be games on this list that are not solely for the PS3. So if you see a game here that you have for another console or platform, please don?t comment on it because I already know.
10 ? Bioshock:
If there?s one big praise I can give the PS3, it?s that they?ve actually managed to make a first-person shooter that I actually LIKE. This game not only provides good combat and shooting mechanics but sets it in a creative environment that hasn?t been done to death in a million other shooters. The Ayn Rand-inspired story, themes, philosophies work really well when putting the backstory of this world into place. The characters and their stories work really well and you really get the feeling that this place was a good example of one man?s vision gone wrong. With good story, characters and gameplay, it?s a more than worthy entry on the list.
9 ? Final Fantasy XIII:
Let me just say right now that this game is nowhere near as good as the FF entries on my other two lists. In fact I would go so far as to say it?s probably the weakest of the FF games I?ve played in my life. Why is it on the list then? Well, despite all that I still enjoyed playing this game. While the levelling up and combat might not be as good as other FF games and the story is fairly generic as far as JRPG stories go, what really puts this game on this list is the visuals. I admit, this game gets my admiration solely on it?s looks. It is one of the most beautiful and detailed video games I?ve ever laid eyes on. I know that sounds shallow but to me, this has always been the video game equivalent of the movie ?Avatar?. Brilliant to look at, not so good to listen to.
8 ? Tales of Monkey Island:
This is without a doubt one of the funniest games I?ve ever played. The only other game in the MI franchise I?ve played before was it?s immediate predecessor ?Escape? which I?ve heard from many is the worst in the franchise. This game, even if I don?t take that into account, was a vast improvement. The writing was just brilliant. The humour was note-perfect and every joke had me in stitches. The story really respects the past games and the puzzles really challenged me at first. A game here mostly for it?s humour, but for humour this good, that?s no bad thing.
7 ? Red Dead Redemption:
One thing that?s always bothered me about the various genres of video games is that I?ve never come across a good Western. This game sets that all straight. It provides a vast open-ended experience with nearly limitless possibilities and side activities to explore. The story is a fairly simple ?man must redeem himself? tale but still, the authentic atmosphere, superb voice-work and tons of activities made this one hell of an enjoyable experience.
6 ? The Sega Mega Drive Collection:
OK I know that many are going to call foul on this one as the games on this disc were made so many console generations ago. I know full well that this was probably an attempt by Sony to squeeze money from Genesis fans. But despite that I love this collection. Tons of games from the height of Sega?s popularity are all here for you to enjoy. It even gave me my first experience of playing the classic Sonic games, which I must admit, I would have loved in the day. Yeah it?s most likely a cash-grab, but if it?s one that provides this much entertainment value, I see no problem with it.
5 ? Batman ? Arkham Asylum:
The BEST Batman game I have ever played. This puts forward everything that a Batman game should have. It has action, stealth, a good story, deep and interesting characters and shows just how much love the creators have for this character. The gameplay is excellent and the sidequests were really fun to engage in, especially the Riddler puzzles. Plus, on top of all that they got voice actors from the classic 90?s animated show. How can I not love that?
4 ? Infamous:
This game is a good attempt in trying to make an original superhero. It?s unique and interesting superpower, the storyline, the comic-book presentation all work together to try and create a superhero for modern times. The gameplay is once again brilliant and the main hero, Cole, is interesting enough to keep the audience engaged in what he does. The morality system may be somewhat simplistic with it?s typical good or evil settings but it does a good job of forcing players to try and show off the kinds of decision they would make.
3 ? Fallout: New Vegas:
This game is, I feel, superior to F3 because it?s morality system is more complicated. It?s far more factionalised than the previous games, with less of a typical good/evil division between groups but rather a multitude of factions you can help or hinder depending on how you want this place to turn out. It is by far the game with the greatest sense of freedom I?ve ever encountered. The sheer amount of places and things you can do here is brilliant. It?s story is fairly simple when you get down to it but despite that I was never bored when playing it.
2 ? Portal 2:
As I said in my review for this game I feel it was superior to the first Portal game mostly because of the improvement in the writing. The mechanics however don?t slouch either. This game is a ton of fun to play giving you a plethora of interesting puzzle sequences which are sure to keep you entertained for hours on end. Not much else to say expect that it?s fun, challenging and with some top-notch writing. Can?t ask for more.
1 ? Ratchet and Clank ? Tools of Destruction:
I know that putting this game above such a masterpiece like Portal 2 will be considered blasphemy but hear me out. This game is at the top of the list mostly because of how much fun it is. Of all the PS3 games I?ve played in my life this one is by far the most enjoyable. The story like many of the entries on this list is fairly simple. But the gameplay provides so many fun moments that it is forgiven. Plus, like FFXIII, this game is beautiful to look at. Using kid-friendly cartoony characters works well with the graphics power of the console and it?s good to see the franchise stay true to what made it so great on the PS2.
Well, that?s it. You now have a list of all my favourite games from the various Playstations. Hope you enjoyed reading these lists and I look forward to seeing what you have to say about them.
