I've yet to play Amnesia, but from what I've seen, the game almost forces you to be scared, using sounds (not music) and special effects. I'm not a particular fan of things pushed up in my face. Cheap scares are just cheap and annoying. True terror is much more gradual and enduring. Diablo 1 for example made you go down into the bowels of the earth, where true horror awaited. Every time you went down another level, you felt the stench of evil getting stronger, wondering if your trusty sword would be enough. Not a horror game, but this horror element made it a great game :) I guess that the scariest games are the ones that are scary by nature of their gameplay. As such, I'd rate Fatal Frame 2 as the scariest game ever made. Apparently, they're remaking it for the Wii (google for "Fatal Frame 2011"). A close second comes Thief 3. The entire design of the game is flawless, gradually building up momentum and atmosphere and then exploding in the "Shalebridge Cradle" level and the Catacombs follow up. And then there's Condemned. It might've been on top of my list, thanks to the brutal meelee, but sudden "scary" moments made it annoying at times. I also would rate Fear 1 very high on my list, not because of the endless Elma shots, but because of the horror and empathy you feel for her at the end of the game. There's a particular shot in the Japanese movie "The Ring 3" which suddenly makes you understand everything that has happened (especially the "ring" theme). Same goes for Fear 1.
Amnesia doesn't force things into your face. Notably I've played the game for about 6 hours now and I don't even know what the monsters look like. Also, you play the game for about an hour before you even have to hide from anything. Amnesia is not like Dead Space, it does not throw monsters at you to make you jump. It hints that something might be coming and then you run away in fear.

Im abit suprised Penumbra wasent there, sure its the same creator and basicly the same game as Amnesia. But Penumbra was based in the current time period and had more mysteri to it. Heck i yet to find another game where a god damn normal wolf can scare the shit out of me like Penumbra did. But it might be just me that get more scared of horror stuff based on current time period compared to the normal 15th-18th century haunted castle/house.

Note: I havent played through either of the two games, for fear of getting a heart attack and life long trauma*sobs*

thats really very intresting, a tip for you brother, while playing horror we must have to keep in mind that these things are not real and will never gonna happen in our lifes, plus we have to learn and practice door close theory, in that theory you can easily learn about how to forget things u dont want to remember.

I don't know what game you were looking at. Amnesia's horror is all about the slow build punctuated by sudden terror (but after long intervals and at unexpected times). You spend the entire first hour with pure atmosphere, with nothing threatening at all.

Amnesia is definitely not a cheesey jump-scare thrill ride, and if you are looking for the slow boil, creeping dread horror you claim to be after, I can't think of a better game to suggest to you.

While I agree LoZ: MM is a genuinely creepy game that totally works as a horror game as well as a treasure-hunting adventure romp, I think you should branch out into other horror games if that's really the only one on your list.

Well better than a lot of lists I have seen out there. I mean I have seen quite a few with L4D and Dead Rising listed on them.

The sheer truama that game inflicted on my childhood pysch makes every other horror game I play feel cheap and not creepy.

But the second I so much as boot up MM.....brrrr

Perhaps you're just playing cheap, and not creepy horror games.

Actually, very little scared me as a kid compared to what can scare me now- once I understand all the implications.

It is very gradual actually. In fact the monster appearing is usually GOOD for me at least because it relieves the tension. It NEVER just jumps out in front of you unless it would add to the gradually building slow horror/frenzy you into fear by running like hell HOPING he isn't right behind you following you because you threw all caution out the window to GET AWAY. Basically it just instills you with the fear of being completely alone with your only "Companions" being the things you are running from, it got to the point I actually gave my lantern a personality since it was the only thing I could trust...

I think Amnesia's spot on that list is perfect.

I don't really play Horror games. Fallout 3/New Vegas does come closest to it, though. Especially Fallout 3, which has few settlements, and a little friendly faces. I walked into the Elementary School in Springvale, and it was... It's ironic that that was one of the places that creeped my out a lot, yet it was a school. Blood and corpses everywhere, trashed, burned, bodies bloodied and hanging from the ceiling... Dirty, dark, and tight spaces.

Oh, and every Metro system in the game, ever. Those places were as generic as you can get, it gets annoying as fuck to look at, but it still maintains a dark feel to it, there are ghouls, and in some, there are deadly traps.

Then, there's Majora's Mask, which scared me as a child. Even now, it frightens me at least a little, but not as much as before. The moon was especially creepy.

Aliens Versus Predator 2 is a terrifying game. Sure you can shoot your way out of things but when the enemy bleeds acid, spraying isn't going to work. Hell, there's a particular level in the Predator storyline where you hear the roar of Predalien and can only guess when it's going to come.

Minecraft.

It can be quite scary! When suddenly exploring caves and in an instance you hear the sound of an arrow getting shot and under a second later you get hit but it and it all happens so fast you're like "Holy crap mother of Earth what was that!?" before you realise it was a skeleton archer.

Also with zombies suddenly being there and spiders coming from above. And the new.

Oh and those Enderman? They're not that scary... 2 hit with an iron sword and they die... pussies.
