This list is thoroughly fluid, and changes a lot for me. So here's my current top three:

3. The Sandman Slim series (Sandman Slim, Kill the Dead, the upcoming Aloha from Hell) by James Kadrey. It's got a premise that seems standard on the surface (guy sent to Hell, tortured, escapes, wants revenge), but the writing crackles with sarcastic wit and crazy-cool dialogue, and the characters are hilariously over-the-top.

2. The Exiles series (Ruins of Ambrai, The Mageborn Traitor) by Melanie Rawn. Magic-wielders in a matriarchal society, revolution, and secret societies. Rawn is a master of alternative sorcery stories, so these novels, her Dragon Prince/Dragon Star trilogies and The Golden Key tie for second.

1. The Hollows novels by Kim Harrison. I love good urban fantasy novels, and this one is wholly believable and beautifully characterized. Anyone who likes GOOD vampire/magic novels should check this out. The style is very similar to the Sandman Slim series.

Lord of the Flies, Ender's Game, though despite having the trilogy I haven't gotten round to reading the other 2.... /afk. Oh, and The Northern Lights for third. As a standalone, that book is head and shoulders above the other 2.
Enders game actually had 4 books in it's series. Enders Game, Speaker for the Dead, Xenocide, and Children of the mind. Well 5 if you count Ender in Exile which expanded more on what was going on during the last chapter of the first book. Then it had the Enders Shadow series which was from the point of view of beans and that series i think have 5 books. There are a few other books set in Enders as well that i can't think of the name off the top of my head. But yeah Definantly pick them up when you get a chance they are really good.

1. The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher- About a Wizard in moden day Chicago who battles supernatural evil. The main charactor, Harry Dresden, is one of my favorite charactors. He is someone who will always try to do what he thinks is the right thing and to hell with the consiquences. This along with a tendancey to insult and make jokes to anyone, in perticuler the bad guys and extreamly powerfull being that he really does not want to piss off but does anyway, has led to him getting a reputation for being both extreamly crazy and extreamly dangerous as well as a very long list of very powerfull enemys. However he also has to fight himself at times due to a darker side that has a lust for power.

2. Codex Alera also by Jim Butcher- Set in a world similer to ancient Rome but the people have the power to control Furies (water, fire, wind, wood and metal). Follows many interesting characters but mainly follows a Man (kid at the begining) called Tavi who is the only Aleren in the world who has no furies of his own so he has to use his brains. Has battles that make the fights in The lord of the rings look like small Skirmishes.

3.Night Angle trillogy by Brent Weeks- would take a week to explain so go on Wikipedia.

EDIT: Also Dresden files has real vampires not emo, douche bag twilight vampires. Big bat like monsters that can create a human shell to fool humans and drink blood, dracular vampires just like Bram Stoker's and a third kind that feed on emotion, each clan liking a different emotion fear, pain and pleasure (normally sexual) being the main ones.

My top 3 books
3: A song of Ice and Fire.
The darkest most depressingly awesome story you will ever read, there are a thousand twists and turns, and its a joy to read, and new things can be discovered every time you re-read it. The only downside is it may not be finished.

2:Artemis Fowl.
This book series is complete and utter awesome. Its books are very short, but the characters are fun, the magical lower elements are an interesting setting, and Eoin Colfer is one of the best authors I've ever read.

1: Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy.
When you want to laugh at the sillieness and stupidity of the world, nothing is better than the misadventures of Arthur Dent, this book series is the perfect comedy series, I only wish that Douglas Adam had survived to give us more.

Mine are:

1. Harry Potter- Obvious choice, but a good one in my opinion. J.K. Rowling creates an expansive and detailed universe with all sorts of magical beings.

2. Redwall- written by the late Brian Jacques, the books are not generally connected chronologically, but are nonetheless detailed and interesting.

3. Artemis Fowl- Last but not least is Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl series, which mixes magic and technology together for an enjoyable story.
I don't know how you did it but well done, you read my mind.

There are still alot of things a want to check out though, Hitchhikers guide, the Dresden files, Discworld. It's just too much.

Edit: Also Lord of the Rings but not so much the writing, more the story (Tolkien's work hurts to read).
